All they have to do is fix the place up and sell it for a tidy profit! Except - as anyone who has renovated an old house knows - things are never that easy. The walls are rapidly crumbling around them, the architect is a certified lunatic, the budget is spiraling...and then there's the disturbingly intelligent cow to worry about.

Publisher's Summary
Meet Zoe and Greg Milton, a married couple who have let themselves go a bit.
Zoe was a stunner in her college days, but the intervening decades have added five stone, and removed most of her self-esteem. Greg's rugby-playing days are well and truly behind him, thanks to countless pints of beer and chicken curry.
When Elise, a radio DJ and Zoe's best friend, tells them about a new competition, it seems like the perfect opportunity to turn their lives around. Fat Chance will pit six hefty couples against one another to see who can collectively lose the most weight and walk away with a £50,000 prize.
So begins six months of abject misery, tears, and frustration—that just might turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to them - in another laugh-out-loud look at the way we live now from bestselling author Nick Spalding.

I freakin loved this book!
SO funny!!!! This book was absolutely hilarious. It's one of my favorite books so far this year. I love the writing style, and the voices for both Zoe and Greg were perfect. At first I loved Zoe's part, but then after a few rounds of Greg, I decided his was funnier. There were times where I was doubled over in laughter, tears streaming down my face. The story was witty, sarcastic, poignant and had an overall terrific message. I totally recommend, especially if you like books that make you laugh out loud.

Absolutely hilarious
If you have ever wanted to lose weight, ever been on a diet or tried exercise to lose weight- and you have a sense of humor - listen to this book!
Fat Chance follows a married couple, Zoe and Greg, through a Biggest Loser type radio show. Written in journal style with both parties describing their experiences. Painfully honest at times, but so flipping hilarious that you can't help but laugh out loud.
Narration was excellent from both Heather Wilds and Napoleon Ryan, I would be hard pressed to chose a favorite.
This book also inspired me to get back out there and start exercising again, so it was definitely a win win picking this jem up while it was on sale.

Take a Chance
You will be forgiven if you feel like you want to give up on Fat Chance somewhere during the first two chapters. Nick Spalding walks a fine line, trying to capture the pain of being obese while still trying to be funny. Rather, he doesn't walk such a fine line. There are numerous times during those two chapters where he strays uncomfortably off the line. Far enough that I was thinking of shutting it down.
But stick with it. I'm glad I did. The problem is in the trying to be funny part, not in disrespect for his characters. Spalding's sympathies lie squarely with his larger in life protagonists, a married couple who reluctantly enter a weight loss contest. They learn a lot about themselves in the process as they attempt exercise plans, try out various fad diets and weight loss gadgets, and are forced to parade the whole shebang in front of a rapt radio audience.
As their life improves over the course of the contest, their health (mental as well as physical) inevitable improving as they get back in shape, the comic vignettes become more palatable (cf. Greg's caffeine jag) even if they are still sometimes too sadistic (cf. the consequences of buying cheap sneakers). The messages are positive and the events are humorous enough. The ending is telegraphed, but I give Spalding credit for only suggesting rather than explicitly stating it.
The narrators go a long way toward keeping you listening when you start to think about bailing. They are both fabulous as the married couple, alternating chapters written in the first person of each character. I'm sure you will instantly envision the English actors who would play them as you listen to their voices.

Vulgar but Funny
This book is filled with some absolutely hysterical bits that had me laughing to the point of tears. I did find find the references to the sexual relationship between the characters over done. I think I would have preferred the radio appropriate family friendly version better. What I enjoyed more than anything was a book where a husband and wife of almost 20 years still enjoyed each other’s company. All too often, romantic fiction is just about the thrill of the chase. The world needs more books to remind us that love is choosing our significant other every day in spite of the challenges life throws at us and that we can have a good time along the way.

HYSTERICAL start that falls into a story that is not nearly so funny anymore but is still sweet to listen to through the end. I still recommend it, but that change in content was definitely disappointing. Will for sure check out other books by this author.

Lotsa Laughs--a Really Fun Listen!
The two events that led to Zoe and Greg agreeing to sign up for a radio station weight loss contest are absolutely hilarious. These events, one for Zoe, one for Greg, are so memorable I could see myself re-listening to the book just to hear them again. Along with a bunch of other funny parts, this book is also serious and even a bit educational about losing weight.
But you won't be listening to Fat Chance to be educated. You will be listening because you need some laughs right now, you've wondered about the people who participate in these strange shows, you are wishing you could do something about your weight, or your curiosity got the better of you, like mine did. It is an easy and quick listen with good narrators. I particularly liked Napoleon Ryan. He seemed much more at ease doing comedy and was perfect for the part of Greg Milton.
You're got nothing to lose ( or maybe you do?), so give it a try. It's FUN!

Laugh Out Loud Fun
"Fat Chance" restored my belief in reading (listening) fun. This novel had me laughing out loud repeatedly as the author explores weight loss gimmicks and bizarre exercise programs combined with an inside look at a marriage, a work-world, family relationships and more. Nick Spalding delivers a story about a married couple who have decided that their weight gain has gotten out-of-hand. When the wife, Zoe, is offered a spot on a radio show that promises a large reward for the greatest weight loss, she gets her husband on-board and signs up. The story then proceeds to outline the most hilarious journey through the weight loss world that I could imagine. Most of the strange diets and exercise programs the couple tries are fads and programs that I have come across in one way or another. OMG. Hilarious. The narrators are flawless - perfect. I won't say that this couple are 100% credible but close enough to make the story a real treat. I highly recommend this fun and uplifting joyride. If you need a laugh, take a ride right here.

Awful narration
I was very much looking forward to this book as a little light relief after reading some thrillers. The female narrator was terrible, like a robot with no emotion at all. The male narrator was better but still a bit stiff. The content of the novel was funny enough and i probably would have enjoyed reading it myself. There was a lot of fat-bashing though which was a bit off putting. Zoe calling her boss pig dog for example just made me cringe. A funny little read for those trying to lose a little weight in January, although if you are more than 5 pounds overweight it could leave a bitter taste in your mouth worse than a slimming shake.

Unbearable
The narration is awful. I found myself auguring with Ms Mills over how she be telling the story because her robotic, nasal voice was overwhelmingly irritating. The parts of the story I could focus on left me frustrated because of the writing. Nick Spalding talks of a curtain growling as it is pulled across; seriously? Growling? And uses narrative viewpoints that are impossible such as the woman in the changing room who's stuck in a dress so badly that she can only just see through the top of it but can somehow describe what the dress looks like round the waist. Just awful. I'm getting my money back. Avoid.

Bizarre narration style
The narration is so bizarre I stopped listening, so probably didn't give the story enough of a chance to be able to score it. It's as though they are putting on mock voices in a children's pantomime. Very strange direction and meant I couldn't listen any further. Perhaps one to read instead

Fat yarn
I listened to the end probably as I need to lose weight and I hoped it would inspire me. Maybe. What I didn't enjoy were the voices playing the leads. They didn't seem a good match to me and I found the female leads voice had weird intonations. The story was ok. Predictable I guess. I wouldn't recommend it.

Felt like Siri was reading the novel to me
As a voracious reader and an English teacher I expected more from an audiobook by such a well regarded writer. The female voice lacked any real emotion, I tried to improve my experience by speeding up the reading to no avail. The male voice was better and more engaged with the words he was reading, but the damage was done. I returned the book.

A bit disappointed
I've read Nick Spalding books before & enjoy his sense of humour, so bought this book without much thought. The book itself, doesn't disappoint. I would totally recommend the book. Sadly the narration lets it down completely. I struggled to get past the first chapter. The tones are confusing and although the words are clear and easy to hear, the lack of pace & natural speaking, loses most of the humour. I struggled to identify with the characters as I couldn't become absorbed in the story. Some of the accents were good but it seemed as if the story were being read for the first time as homework. I asked friends to listen to the first chapter & without exception they couldn't understand why it was being read in that way. It was irritating. I will always listen to a sample in future, to avoid this again. Sorry guys but it wasn't good.

This book starts off with a very robotic account of an overweight woman being embarrassed in a changing room. So far so bog standard. It then switches to the male character who sounda like he is struggling to draw a breath. This of course may be deliberate as the character is very overweight, but it didn't really enhance my listening enjoyment. At first I thought I would stick with this to while away the time but then I decided that I would prefer to enrich it. Sadly it is too late for me to return this one so I will put it down to experience.

Immature and cringe in places!
It's a good story but the target audience must be teenagers - the humour is offensive in places and the performances are awful in places. I felt that I had to get to the end but in books you enjoy you rarely frown at the audio device!!

Poor narration
What would have made Fat Chance better?
Better storytellers, they both ruined the book for me
What could Nick Spalding have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I had to stop reading this - the story wasn't for me and the narration very irritating
Would you be willing to try another one of Heather Wilds and Napoleon Ryan ’s performances?
No
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment

Returned.
I don't know if it's just me BUT...I couldn't take to this book at all. I suspect once again it's the narrators trying to do accents and adopt character styles. It just didn't work for me.

This book is more like a doco.
What did you like best about Fat Chance? What did you like least?
It is quite a believable story.
I did not feel the compulsion to keep listening to it, but I did anyway. I'm not a quitter!
The male narrator should not try to attempt the female voice. It sounds ludicrous.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
As above: the guy should not try to do the female voice.
Did Heather Wilds and Napoleon Ryan do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
Yes they were differentiated well. Each had their own personality and individually were likeable characters
Did Fat Chance inspire you to do anything?
I am inspired to find very strong chairs at barbecues, and to take only the prescribed dose of Ibuporofen.
Any additional comments?
This book is OK. It won't keep you riveted but it will allow your brain to have a few hours off. And that's not a bad thing.

Easy listen
Nice story, easy to listen in the car. I didn't like the male narrators voice - I have heard him in other audio books and didn't like him in those either. But it didn't ruin the story for me. I would recommend this for those who like a nice easy story to listen to , without wanting something too complex.
