Story
Twenty one-year-old Max Monroe has it all: beauty, friends, and a glittering life filled with adventure. With tons of followers on Instagram, her picture-perfect existence seems eminently enviable. Except it’s all fake. Max is actually 16-year-old Kat Sanchez, a quiet and sarcastic teenager living in drab Bakersfield, California. Nothing glamorous in her existence—just sprawl, bad house parties, a crap school year, and the awkwardness of dealing with her best friend Hari’s unrequited love.

Ever since she got pregnant freshman year, Emoni Santiago’s life has been about making the tough decisions - doing what has to be done for her daughter and her abuela. If Bao Nguyen had to describe himself, he’d say he was a rock. Steady and strong, but not particularly interesting. His grades are average, his social status unremarkable. He works at his parents’ pho restaurant, and even there, he is his parents’ fifth favorite employee. Not ideal. If Linh Mai had to describe herself, she’d say she was a firecracker. The only problem? Her parents rely on her in ways they’re not willing to admit, including working practically full-time at her family’s pho restaurant.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find - her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region. Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid.

Story
Sixteen-year-old Randy Kapplehoff loves spending the summer at Camp Outland, a camp for queer teens. It's where he met his best friends. It's where he takes to the stage in the big musical. And it's where he fell for Hudson Aaronson-Lim - who's only into straight-acting guys and barely knows not-at-all-straight-acting Randy even exists. This year, however, it's going to be different. Randy has reinvented himself as "Del" - buff, masculine, and on the market. Even if it means giving up show tunes, nail polish, and his unicorn bedsheets, he's determined to get Hudson to fall for him.

Publisher's Summary
Coming of age as a Fat brown girl in a white Connecticut suburb is hard. Harder when your whole life is on fire, though.
Charlie Vega is a lot of things. Smart. Funny. Artistic. Ambitious. Fat.
People sometimes have a problem with that last one. Especially her mom. Charlie wants a good relationship with her body, but it's hard, and her mom leaving a billion weight loss shakes on her dresser doesn't help. The world and everyone in it have ideas about what she should look like: thinner, lighter, slimmer-faced, straighter-haired. Be smaller. Be whiter. Be quieter.
But there's one person who's always in Charlie's corner: her best friend Amelia. Slim. Popular. Athletic. Totally dope. So when Charlie starts a tentative relationship with cute classmate Brian, the first worthwhile guy to notice her, everything is perfect until she learns one thing - he asked Amelia out first. So is she his second choice or what? Does he even really see her? UGHHH. Everything is now officially a MESS.
A sensitive, funny, and painful coming-of-age story with a wry voice and tons of chisme, Fat Chance, Charlie Vega tackles our relationships to our parents, our bodies, our cultures, and ourselves.

heartwarming
I laughed, I cringed, I cried, and I laughed some more.
Charlie embodied so much of what I went through in high school I felt like I was time traveling. Her struggle against her insecurities and doubts was so personal and honest she felt like a old friend. I loved every moment of her, even when she wasn't at her best.
Charlie isn't this perfect Disney teen but she felt absolutely real and real people have flaws. Loved it and recommended it to my younger sisters.

Melodrama and Teen Victory
I am giving this a lower rating, mostly because of the characters and their own self-pity. As a former teenager, I understand to a degree the relationship dynamics between beat friends and parents who may mean well or say things when lashing out, but towards the end I began to not like either the main character or her best friend. It was a good story with a typical romantic "girl gets the guy" despite putting him through hell. But the story was about friendship, self-acceptance, and of course love so it was a good bit of fluff. still, not my favorite book but good for a cute listen.

Fantastic performance & story
What a great story! Sometimes the relationship between Charlie and her mother hit a little close to home with how good was viewed, but is nice to know that other have those experiences. Occasionally, Charlie overdescribes a situation or an outfit, but I didn’t mind because she’s a writer and a fashionista so it’s totally in character for her to be doing so!
The narrator was FANTASTIC!! She developed unique voices for all the characters. The audio didn’t sound over-processed and it was almost like she was sitting in the car next to me.
