Story
When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught. Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Truly awful
I’ve read all the books in this series and enjoyed most of them. But the quality has deteriorated over time. This one was a ridiculous, meandering mess. The police are embarrassingly bad. It seems that every book gets more like a silly soap opera. The conversations at the station sound like something overheard at the Ladies’ Knitting Society. Yuck.

Fear on the Fens: a Fatuous Fractured Fairytale
I do not know where to start and I am sorry I finished the book. The story was way over the top and the cops are portrayed as fools. Even if you suspend your disbelief the plot does not work. Yes crazy people do crazy things, but this book had too many crazies and too many crazy coincidences.

Very good book in a great series
The thirteenth book in the Nikki Galena series is an excellent addition to Joy Ellis’ body of work.
This could have been a 5-star book but I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters. The story was interesting if not a bit different. Brothers, a scientist father, the intelligence service, and some bizarre murders give Nikki and her team a case they won’t soon forget. I never saw the ending coming.
Excellent narration again by Henrietta Meire.
The next book should be fantastic and I look forward to it.

Kind of goofy....
Definitely NOT one of her best works. The story, not the writing. Enjoyed visiting the characters again, but not one I will ever listen to again. I do hope this is not the end of the line for Nikki Galena, but if there are no better stories to tell, maybe it should be.

Huge Disappointment
I have read or listened to all Nikki Galena novels and loved them, but this is a huge disappointment. Joy Ellis did not put her heart into Fear on the Fens. Nikki comes off as incompetent. The story rambles and is almost ridiculous. Will finish only because I’m not a quitter.

Mystical mumbo jumbo
I buy every Joy Ellis available. She never disappoints with her characterizations and settings. That's why I read this book to the bitter end, believing it had to get better.
It didn't.
If you believe in fairies and magical portals and evil imps, this book is for you. It seems the author was struggling to find a plot device to justify a series of macabre murders.
I did finish, but I had to set the speed at 1.5 to make it through. It's another example of a book that would have been much better at half the length.
I will not give up on Joy Ellis yet.

Truthfully one of the oddest books ever ….
Clunky dialogue, extremely clunky dialogue, and a bizarre story line, combining espionage with the paranormal with the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. My favourite passages are the bedtime conversations of the two characters who are supposed to be having a relationship of some kind … astoundingly wooden and utterly sexless. All In all it’s a triumph of something or other.

Abrupt, disjointed story telling
This is not a pleasant listen. The story plot is great which kept me going but one reader has a harsh voice and the ‘said Joseph’, ‘said Nicky’ at the end of speech was disjointed, like it had been recorded and added rather than spoken as a fluid part of the reading. Awful. Almost gave up.

Totally different murder storyline, but exceptional as ever...so great to have Nikki and Joseph back and all the old crew 😊 the wealth of knowledge and the research Joy Ellis does is mindblowing...how does she even think of these scenarios? I'm very excited for the next book which I know will come...don't leave us hanging for too long please! 😁☺🙂

A Fitting End
Marvelous, I didn’t see that end coming and the bit right at the last was a fitting end to the last “Fens” book. Thank you Joy Ellis, for a series of books I binged-listened-to!
Now for Jackman & Evan …

Ridiculous and nasty
I’ve enjoyed many of Joy Ellis books before but I can’t finish this one. The writing is bad, but the attitudes in this book were unbearable.
The language around mental health is stigmatising and horrid. Not least, a ridiculous mental health diagnosis that has been made up. If you’re going to write about mental illness, at least research a real condition.
The stigmatising, repetitive references to a person with a mental health issue as psychotic, dangerous and deranged and the character Nicky’s continual mocking of them was unsettling.
A female character asking her husband if it was alright to go out as she hadn’t made his dinner yet was the final straw in Ellis’s backwards and unrelatable characters.
