Publisher's Summary

"There are times when parenting seems nothing more than feeding the mouth that bites you." (Peter De Vries)

Parenting teenagers can be hard. Maybe you already know that. The question is, does adolescence really need to be a frustrating time for parents and teenagers? If your child isn't a teenager yet, can you make preparations now to avoid many of the pitfalls parents of adolescents go through? With so much information and differing viewpoints, how can a parent really know that they are "doing it right"?

In Feeding the Mouth That Bites You, Dr. Ken Wilgus outlines a clear and practical path through the confusion of parenting adolescents in today's world. Engaging, accessible, and funny, Feeding the Mouth That Bites You summarizes Dr. Wilgus's best teachings on how to parent teenagers, collected over 25 years of work with adolescents and their families as well as two decades of teaching on parenting.

Though trends and technology will always change, the adolescent need for autonomy remains the one foundational issue that is the largest obstacle to a healthy parent/teenager relationship. Feeding the Mouth That Bites You explains this need and the effect it has on a wide range of teenage behavior. Dr. Wilgus clearly outlines his method for safely and effectively meeting this need: Planned Emancipation. Once parents clearly understand adolescents' needs and know how to respond, parenting a teenager becomes much less frustrating. Even their teenagers join in to help out!

Knowing what your teenager needs and being able to provide for that need is truly the art of Feeding the Mouth That Bites You.

Must read for anyone dealing with teens

This book offers beautiful perspective, precise actionable steps and practical reasoning to successfully parent teens. I feel like parenting teens has been the hardest thing I have ever done. One down and launched to college, one still at home. Watching my college student make the mistakes has really prompted me to find a better way with the one I still have at home. I will definitely be putting these things into practice to plan emancipation more successfully.

Most helpful book on raising teenagers!

This book has encouraged and empowered me to navigate the difficult waters of raising my two teenage boys as a single mom. I listened to every single minute of this book and I’m looking forward to implementing the very practical freedoms / boundaries list, and expectations/consequences list. Thank you for your wisdom Dr. Ken.

Mind blowing way to parent, Revolutionary!

This book is for all parents, if your a parent of a young child they will eventually become an adolescent so it’s best to put these practices in your mind and start considering these strategies. It was so helpful. May sound weird, but I felt seen as a parent by this author. Some of the exact scenarios and some similar we deal with and it helped me to see why the fights and why what we were doing was actually just banging out head against a brick wall. It has helped me to see how to reach my teenagers. It’s also shown me where we can improve as parents! I am about to listen to it again and I bought the book it will arrive today! I am a pen and paper gal and the facts/tips and strategies are to fast to catch to write down. I want to create the rules and expectations/consequences and freedoms list. We tried the freedoms but we didn’t implement the consequences and not consistently (which i struggle with as a parent) so we had to reset that. These methods work and I highly recommend this book to everyone! I have shared with all of my friends! If your a Christian or not- buy it!

Love it!

Excellent! I have a 17 & 14 year old. My older daughter is a rare jewel lol. She gained all her freedoms already naturally and most of the “freedoms” just weren’t relevant to her. HOWEVER! This book is a God send for my 14 son who is going through the toughest stage of being a male and the toughest season of being parent lol. (IE MALES AGE 13-18) My husband hasn’t listened to or would necessarily be on board with these ideas but I can implement things that are in my territory to implement without bringing any conflict to our home.
I’m so grateful for these insights.

Just what I needed to hear!

For anyone who has goals for themselves and their kids, and also for those who don't. I was amazed to see how much of this book I have already implemented on my own as a first time adolescent parent. Which gave me a particularly good confidence booster. I related to this book on so many levels. However I realized my true source of struggles come from me, also not putting clear concise boundaries in place for not only my 14 yo, but also my 10 yo, and myself. I needed to grow my parenting style to meet my child. I bought a copy of the book as a reference, and once I see the results from my adjustments will be happy to pass along this book that I so very much believe every parent should read.
personal note:
I heard of this book through a segment on focus on the family on my 5:30am drive on my way home from work one day. I only heard snippets, but it was enough for me to see it was God trying to help me with my struggle (I'd been praying alot in this area due to recent issues). so If you feel it's talking to you in anyway, pick it up, what's the worst that can happen?

Incredible

This book is nothing short of incredible. It articulates what I knew to be true as a teen and now what we are struggling with as parents.

No better book on parenting teenagers

I enjoyed this book immensely, and I wish I had it several years ago when my now 18 year-old was entering his teenage years. Luckily he’s doing great, and it’s not too late for me to do better with my other younger kids. Any parent’s lives will be so much better if you read this book and start working towards “planned emancipation.” You owe it to your kids!

Must read if you have teens!

This is just what I needed for this phase of my parenting. Great for parents with teens. It's the next step as kids go from children to adolescents. No fuss, no heavy jargon, straightforward insights into teens. Scientific backing to thought patters, applicable strategies, good mix of fact, action, and anecdotal stories. Yes, this author actually has his own teens!! Will read again, and probably buy a hard copy to highlight, it was that good!
