Story
Jon Slade finally met his mate, but instead of it being the happiest day of his life, it became the saddest when wolf shifter Kelvin MacCurdy chose his obligations over their fated bond, leaving Jon to pick up the pieces of his shattered dreams. Lucky for him, Roman Howell, his boss and the owner of L'Ange, saw promise in the forlorn lion and put him to work. Then the wolves make an official visit to L'Ange, and Jon finds out Kelvin's pining for him is taking its toll on his position as the king's champion.

Story
You belong to me and I know it down deep, in muscle and bone, where my wolf lives. Avery Rhine isn’t an average homicide detective with the Chicago PD. In fact, Avery isn’t an average anything. Sure, as an omega he knows he’s at the bottom of the food chain, but that’s never slowed him down. He’s got a great life, complete with a loving family and a best friend who’d take a bullet for him, so what more could he possibly want or need? Except, maybe, for the world to change.

My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

“You are the savior of mankind” are the last words I ever expected to hear while nibbling on fries. The thing is, I’m not mankind saving material. I don’t even have magic (and just found out it exists). I’m the most boring, normal(ish) human ever. Suddenly, I’m being tossed right into the middle of a fight that started years before I was even born, and then I get partnered up with Alastair, a quirky magical Guardian. He is rather attractive and sweet when he’s not into the whole “woe is me, I can’t let myself fall in love with you” nonsense.

Publisher's Summary
L'Ange: Book Two
Only a privileged few know L'Ange's head of security, Arman de Soto, is a shifter, and even fewer know he's been systematically killing off a pack of werewolves. The reason for this vengeance is a secret Arman trusts with no one, quite the opposite of his obvious longtime pursuit of the chateau's overseer, Linus Hobbes. Despite Arman's reputation as a loner, the only thing he needs to complete his life is Linus. Predator and prey just don't mix, but Arman won't give him up.
Linus has lived alone for more than seven years, sheltered at L'Ange under an assumed name and hiding secrets of his own, including his terrifying attraction to the most dangerous man he's ever met. Arman knows Linus should be afraid of the predator stalking him, but Linus is still drawn to him like a moth to a flame no matter how much he tries to deny his instincts. It's not until Linus's past and Arman's crusade exposes their secrets and opens L'Ange to attack that Arman realizes waiting any longer is a risk he just can't take. So he'll have to take his quest to the source of the threat in a gamble to protect L'Ange, Linus, and any future they might have together.

Gotta Love Mary Calmes and Tristan James together
Would you listen to Fighting Instinct again? Why?
Yes - I love Linus!
What other book might you compare Fighting Instinct to and why?
Well - obviously Old Loyalty, Mary's other shifter books and All Kinds of Tied Down. It's very heartwarming and funny with only a little angst.
Have you listened to any of Tristan James’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes and he's always amazing.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I loved the part where the guys make Arman the Alpha - so hysterical!
Any additional comments?
We met Arman in Old Loyalty, New Love. He was the mysterious bodyguard who helped protect Roman and Quade. Though we were led to believe he was interested in a certain jackal named Tucker, we find out quickly that this was a red-herring, serving to stir jealousy in the heart of Linus.Linus is the fastidious and cold caretaker of L’Ange. It’s clear he’s been abused in his past and we learn early on just how terrible that abuse was. Arman has been Linus’ protector and often his touchstone for years, but the time has come for that relationship to develop to its full potential and Arman isn’t waiting any longer.Arman is a man of mystery. We don’t know what he is, though we all think he must be a shifter – it isn’t until quite a bit into the story that we figure out just what he is. (I think everyone will be surprised by the reveal!)In addition to hiding who he is, he also hides what he does. We find out that he has an agenda- a vendetta really – of epic proportions. This vendetta makes him almost an anti-hero. He’s definitely not the typical perfect Alpha we have seen in other Mary Calmes’ stories. He’s got a dark side that he’s embraced fully.Surprisingly, Linus is perfectly okay with this dark side and in fact, he too embraces the vendetta and we see some pretty significant changes in his personality as a result of this. One of the things I really liked about this story was that Linus and Arman get together pretty early on. They work as a team for most of the story and it was imminently satisfying to watch their relationship grow and deepen while they worked together.Though it might seem a bit blood-thirsty, the vendetta is explained really well and at no time did I feel that there was any other possible course of action than that which Arman took.I really felt that in this “universe” the animal natures of the shifters were really well developed and “authentic”. These aren’t people who just happen to have the occasional “furry power” thrown in to explain insta-love and mating. They are truly unique beings with a different set of rules and personalities.I loved that Roman wasn’t quite on board with the vendetta. Sure, he loves Linus and despised what happened to him, but he wasn’t born a shifter and he still sees things through a human lens and judges by a different rule-book.Mary Calmes is amazing at world building and her shifter universe is unique, creative and very well developed. She isn’t afraid to stray from typical “shifter” lore and she draws us in with her own clever style. The chemistry between Arman and Linus is scorching hot. Mary writes excellent sex scenes and the sexual tension and it’s subsequent release is phenomenal in Fighting Instinct.Though it isn’t the first time and it won’t be the last time I say it – I love Mary Calmes’ books and I highly recommend them all.AudiobookTristan James narrates this book as well as book one and as you know he is one of my favorite narrators. His voice is delicious! In this he doesn’t do much to differentiate Linus from Arman, but the emotion and speech patterns he uses makes it evident who is talking.I LOVED the banter and devotion between Arman and Linus. Tristan does a beautiful job of playing the growly Arman off with the cool and calm Linus. One of my favorite parts is when the group wants to make Arman the Alpha and include John, the lion in the new “pack”. Hysterical!I can’t wait for the next in the series and I hope we see our lion with his mate very soon!I give this 6 of 5 hearts – Amazing!

goddamn AWESOME applesauce
I cannot stress how much I LOVE Armand DeSoto. He is a phenomenal beast. I'm always entertained with Mary Calmes, but this story entertained, enlightened, and engulfed me with delight. Armand is gruff, blunt, and everything I wanted in a character. I'm no soldier, but I have the same moral code, and I agreed with everything he said and did. Never have I read a story where a character went against every "hero" standard known to man. Fu#$ken phenomenal. FINALLY. I couldn't get enough. I loved the man, loved the beast he embodies, and I will never, ever, EVER find a character so invigorating. THIS is why Calmes is on top. She gives us more with each page. "Better than yours", "that's the name of my clan." Oh yeah... Calmes stories will ALWAYS be better than yours. I simply cannot get enough... and I wouldn't want to. Flawless.

Good premise but bogged down by info dumps...
So this has an interesting premise.
A prey shifter falling in love with a predator, and the main character is basically a vigilante serial killer... though when you find out why, it's mostly justified. This is probably the 'grayest' you'll get in a Mary Calmes MC, morality-wise. At least the main POV character wasn't another Jory clone.
I would have preferred if this had more of Linus and Arman's earlier interactions in the seven years they've been working together. Because the way it was done, there was very little buildup to them becoming mates. The action was also bogged down with long info dumps and exposition.
With regard to narration, this isn't Tristan James' best. He seemed a bit stiffer reading the narrative and dialogue in this one compared with other titles he's narrated. I don't know if it was because of how the story was written or if he just didn't have a lot of time to do a read through and just did a cold narration. This just wasn't as good as his performance in Parting Shot. Still, Tristan at his worst is still better than a lot of other narrators I've listened to.

Good sequel
I really enjoyed this 2nd book in this series. Although it is a second book, it can be read as a stand alone. The combination of Mary Calmes and Tristan James is always a good combination. This was a really interesting book because it starts with Arman admitting he knows Linus is his mate. The first part of the book is convincing Linus of this fact. Linus resists because he has past trauma he has not come to terms with. Little does he know Arman (who is a secret shifter of an unusual kind) has been avenging his tormentors for years. The theme of the book is Arman does not see himself as a "hero" in the traditional sense; he thinks he is a very bad man. In a way he is correct, but as Linus points out, it depends on who is telling the story. Arman self view is challenged by his merry band of men and his mate. The second half of the book is mostly about Linus confronting his past. An interesting story; a fantastic narrator; it is all good. Worth a credit.

I agree with the other reviewers
This story involves an NON APOLOGETIC bad guy.
Well, not really a bad guy IMO, just a real person.
I regret not having a shifter-vampire TV show written by Mary Calmes. We need her no nonsense writing style in our TV lives as well.
Of course the other characters shine as well but Armand is...the most unforgettable one and his loving relationship is to die for.
This is the first book I read of M.C. and I crave for more.

Arman deSoto is a wonder and Linus is drawn so well that you can just hear the disdain dripping off him at times. Don't miss it, well worth your time.

Entertaining
I was amused for a few hours. Doubt I will ever lister to it again. Similar plotline as the first. No drama in the relationship but from outsiders.

Great story
This is an interesting story. Well written and with likeable characters. The narration is good as well.
