No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan's most high-profile and mysterious buildings. As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story...until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.

Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can't move. She can't speak. She can't open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn't remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from 20 years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

Publisher's Summary
The national and international best seller.
Ten years ago, six friends went on vacation. One made it out alive...
In that instant, college student Quincy Carpenter became a member of a very exclusive club - a group of survivors the press dubbed “The Final Girls”: Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a college dropout's knife; Sam, who endured the Sack Man during her shift at the Nightlight Inn; and now Quincy, who ran bleeding through the woods to escape the massacre at Pine Cottage. Despite the media's attempts, the three girls have never met.
Now, Quincy is doing well - maybe even great, thanks to her Xanax prescription. She has a caring almost-fiancé; a popular baking blog; a beautiful apartment; and a therapeutic presence in Coop, the police officer who saved her life. Her mind won’t let her recall the events of that night; the past is in the past...until the first Final Girl is found dead in her bathtub and the second Final Girl appears on Quincy's doorstep.
Blowing through Quincy's life like a hurricane, Sam seems intent on making her relive the trauma of her ordeal. When disturbing details about Lisa's death emerge, Quincy desperately tries to unravel Sam's truths from her lies while evading both the police and bloodthirsty reporters. Quincy knows that in order to survive she has to remember what really happened at Pine Cottage.
Because the only thing worse than being a Final Girl is being a dead one.

Shocking twists and turns
I'll be honest, I was smug in thinking that I had it all figured out. But I was wrong. Then I thought I had it figured out again, but I was still wrong. I was truly surprised by the ending.
Definitely a good thriller that keeps you guessing. Lags a little in the middle, but makes it up in last half of the book. Narration was spot on. I would read something else she wrote!

Not what I expected...in a good way
I get hung up sometimes on the review details. Lately I decided to go back to the reviews of the books I really enjoyed and noticed a pattern...there's always a handful of disgruntled folk. Thankful to have that fact in my pocket and ultimately selecting this book.
Interesting story, great characters, fantastic narration, and suspense from start to finish.

Thriller in a Bottle
This is my own opinion. Others may have enjoyed this book.
The beginning opens up with Quincy coping with her final girl status. Wow. A Final Girl. Neat premise. She became less likeable as the story dragged in the middle. It plodded. Wondering how stupid she could be as she changed into a trope of the idiotic girl who always does the wrong thing, I trudged onward through the story. I will say the narrator was excellent. The end is ok-ish. Guessed the killer. Now at the end, I'm more depressed and sleepy than thrilled.
Take Buffy and Faith remove the action, intelligence and wit.

I am so surprised at the 5 star reviews! The dialogue was ridiculous. It is hard to rate the narration because the narrators had such poor material. The story was silly. Please don’t waste your money or credit. I rarely review a book but this one was so bad I felt an obligation to warn others.

A Suspenseful Tale That Will Pull You In
Quincy is the third final girl. Though she likes to pretend that she's not. She likes to pretend that she's normal, but I'm not sure how anyone can be “normal” after they've gone through such a traumatic experience like Quincy has. Even if she can't remember all of the details. Her seemingly perfect life is going almost according to plan. That is until Sam, the second final girl comes into her life. That’s when things begin to take an interesting turn for Quincy…
I liked how the the story flip flops between present day events and the events at Pine Cottage 10 years ago, where Quincy and her friends was attacked. Quincy is a fighter, she has a temper, and she would do whatever is necessary to survive. But is there a limit to what she would do?
Sam I did not like from the beginning. She seemed very manipulative and I felt like she had an agenda and Quincy was all too easy to be manipulated and pressured into doing things. Which annoyed me. I don’t want to say too much about the storyline and characters because it’s fun to discover things yourself as your reading.
However, I will say that this book is labeled in the mystery, thriller, suspense category and I felt like it fit the bill perfectly. This may even be one of the better mystery/thriller books that I have read so far this year. I ended up listening to the audiobook version of Final Girls. There were two female narrators for this book; Erin Bennett and Hillary Huber. They both did a good job of bringing the characters to life. It did start off a little slow, but I kept with it until it picked up. I am so glad that I did. Around 75% into the storyline I thought I knew exactly where things were going and how everything was going to be wrapped up. It turns out the author pulled a fast one on me and I ended up knowing nothing! There were surprises and twists to the story that made it even more interesting than it already was. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I cannot wait to see what the author chooses to write next.

I'm really surprised by all the 4 & 5 star reviews
Oh man. This book sure dragged. There is a twist ending so I gave a few stars for that, but for the first 3/4 of the book, absolutely nothing happens. Unfortunately, the writing and the way the story unfolded was very unrefined; it definitely reads like a first novel. Repetitive interactions between flat characters. Unrealistic and stilted dialogue meant to convey part of the plot, but is in no way reflective of how actual people speak conversationally. We are given the most insight into the main character, and even then, she is so flat and devoid of personality that I kept forgetting her name. Who is she? Why should I care about her, and her perspective? What does she feel, think, care about? I need more than just to know that she is walking, and now she sees her boyfriend, and now she is walking again, and now she is looking at herself in the mirror. Writing lacked maturity to make a truly effective thriller.

Nice debut novel!
I loved this book. The narrators were very good and they can make or break the story for me. I read several reviews on the internet for this book and it seems like you either love it or hate it. If you are a fan of slasher movies you will probably enjoy this book. I really didn't know who the killer was until the very end because I was looking where I was lead. I would recommend this book.

Groan-inducing dialogue, flat characters
"He was like a conversational dentist, extracting what needs to be removed." "Suspicion hovers over the table, humid and sour." "Anticipation pulses off her skin like body heat. Her repeated moans like a taunting bird in the branches. " The previous sentences are quotes from the book, and if they appeal to you (and there are tons that are similarly bad), then you may enjoy the book. Quincy (the main character) is a thieving, wimpy, defensive victim who is easily led into assault. Her boyfriend is an obnoxious jerk and none of the other cardboard characters in this novel are any better. I was hoping to be thrilled by this book (that has stellar reviews), but was obviously let down. I had nothing invested in Quincy (her entire personality rang false) so I didn't care if she lived or died. If you can't stand the main character (and the entire book is told from her perspective) what chance does the book have? The writing was atrocious (as I've already mentioned) and I could make a decent-sized novel using only the bad metaphors/similes and lousy dialogue. I predicted the plot twist, was bored through most of story, and the Central Park occurrence was so over-the-top I almost quit the book right there. At that point, I decided I would soldier through it, so I varied the speed between 1.5 and 2 times regular.. I didn't give one star, only because I managed to finish it. Narrators were decent, and possibly even really good, so I'm adding a star since I think my opinion is colored by the view of the novel.
