Publisher's Summary

She was a monster, sleek and gleaming, designed to strike without warning like the dreaded shark. She was the USS Mako, as fearless and bold as any submarine that ever prowled the blue Pacific. Her mission: seek out and destroy the hitherto invincible ships of the Japanese Imperial Navy - and revenge the earlier defeats of a long and dirty war. Here is the story of the men who pitted their lives against impossible odds in the most dangerous branch of the American armed services. It is a story of men pushed to the breaking point and beyond in the most nerve-wracking, heart-stirring warfare of all, a story of glory, grit, and guts, and of the astonishing resources that human beings call forth when put to the ultimate test.

It was pretty good until the end

The characters and narration were pretty good, but the end of the story was a ripoff. It was like the author had a time deadline and just stopped the story instead of ending it. I would return the book but I did listen to it, don't make that mistake, you will be disappointed.

Spoilers: Ending

I struggled at the beginning because it went in so many different directions. Some of the characters could have been fleshed out a little more. BUT, overall I loved it. I am a "happy ending" kind of person so the ending really hurt my feelings.

Not as good as reviews suggest..

Ok, I know the saying “those who can’t, criticize”. And when it comes to writing, what some like, others don’t. With that in mind, my issues are with the story and dialogues.
Some of the characters and dialogues are quite good and some are cringeworthy. First, and I am no sjw, women are objectivised, with only 1 exception. Second, in a rigidly class based structure like the Navy and certainly like the 1940s navy, enough of the interactions between junior and senior officers are off, enough so that I found myself thinking, no way, rather than following the story. Tom Clancy is the gold standard and in my king the author is about 60%. I’m less than halfway thru and I’m sorry I burned a credit on this.

Good story, read too fast.

Narration was unnecessarily fast. That made the story hard to follow and absorb characters, locations, etc.

The end is straight bonkers awesome.

What a fun, educational, gripping story. Gearheads will love it for the detail porn. There were times I thought the author was going overboard (pun intended) on refs and detail, but in the end, everything lays off. The writing itself at times seemed a bit stilted (with a bit of cringe), but as a book published in 1980, it’s indicative of that’s era of popular literature.

All my reservations about this book, however, we’re blown away by the end. This beast iPad action-packed and a ton of fun.

Beautiful and Tragic

The sub war was prolific and many subs never returned. Arrogance on behalf the command structure needed criminal investigation in my opinion. I get this is fiction but we all know about the M15 exploders and M15 running too deep. It seems the boys were fighting on 3 fronts, Atlantic, Pacific and Command!!!

Good yarn

An entertaining story with enough technical content to make the yarn nearly believable. Good value within the Audible subscription program.
