Publisher's Summary

As war rages, everyone has to do their bit....

Bristol 1941.

As the clouds of war grow bleaker both at home and abroad, the Tobacco Girls are determined to do their bit for king and country. To that end Maisie Miles and Bridget Milligan become voluntary ambulance drivers.

As well as coping with the frequent air raids, Maisie is kept on her toes with three new junior employees, one of whom is particularly testing. Bridget’s heart becomes torn between family loyalty and American tobacco tycoon Lyndon O’Neill III, the man she loves.

Meanwhile Phyllis Harvey has joined the WAAF, opting to serve overseas whilst trying to escape her past. Her letters home are upbeat and her friends are initially envious of descriptions of sunshine and blue sea. The truth she hides is that life on the island of Malta is fraught with extreme food shortages, daily air raids and the fear that tomorrow might never come.

The future appears far less certain as the reality of war bites into the Tobacco Girls’ lives.

Why?

Oh dear why did you change the Narrator? I will still follow the lives of our three girls because I love the story and Lizzie Lane’s writing. She manages to evoke the period and the people. But the narrator is very grating and it’s hard to get past this.

Disappointed with this book

I’ve read the first two in the series and loved them, this one the whole 2nd chapter wasted on recapping the first two books, Narrator different too, I preferred the original one, I’ll still read the next book but hope it doesn’t waste chapters retelling the earlier books. Presumably if someone picks these books then they’ll start with the first book anyway. Storyline getting a bit dragged out now. Such a shame as they started off so well.

Good story shame how it ended

This was good and I enjoyed the story lots going on and kept your interest. But found listening to the narrative very hard work.
Very very disappointed on how it ended, nothing was rounded up!! it came to a sudden halt!!! Like, What was it all about? But saying that there is another so will get that as I want to know what happens. Also Why Oh Why did you change the Narrative. She did a ok job but noting like the one who did the first two books she got the characters off perfect and she read it beautifully.
I really hope the next book is the narrative from the first two books, as I don't know if I could cope with this one again..Lovely story but poor ending .

Change of narrator

Shame the narrator has changed, no disrespect but got used to the first one and never quite got into this one. Ending seemed rushed but still love the story line and will continue with the series.

Rehash of book 2

Very disappointed as books 1 and 2 had been so interesting. However, this 3rd book went over the same ground as book 2 but with different outcomes. Will not be reading any more as feel very confused now and cannot see where the story can go without further confusion.

Not as good as the first two books

I enjoyed the narration of the first two books but was very disappointed with the third one. The characters sound totally different and it was hard actually liking them with these new voices. I liked hearing about the historical side of Bristol. Must admit Phyllis’s typing speed of over 70wpm made me laugh. I dont think that was possible on a clunky manual typewriter! The constant recaps annoyed me a little as did the ending of the book.

I’ll likely not waste another credit but who knows.

Dreadful narration

As a Bristolian, I just about managed to listen to the first 2 books with a half hearted attempt to deliver a Bristolian accent. This narrator was dreadful and I have no idea what accent she was trying to replicate. Absolute disgrace and disrespectful to the hard work the author put in to those book. I had to return it to Audible.
