Story
Bloodlust and insanity rule my existence. As a fierce drakoni warrior, this strange new world I find myself in eats at my mind until there is nothing left. There is no light or clarity...until she arrives. I save her life, plucking her from the sky. From that point on, she is mine. But the human I have chosen for my mate - Sasha - is fragile and wounded. She does not trust me and fears my presence. I will not give up, though. I will do anything to give her my fires and bond us both in body and spirit.

Story
The eligible dragon shifter males must hunt a handful of females. It's first catch, first serve. The biggest problem is that the females are human. Despite feedback to the contrary, Coal thinks they are weak and breakable. In his opinion, not capable of surviving the hunt, let alone the mating that will follow. He doesn't believe that a lowly human is capable of birthing him a royal heir, so why has his brother, the king, tasked him with claiming one?

On the unforgiving planet of Dakkar, I did what all the humans in our village did: kept my head down, worked to provide for my family, and certainly didn’t break any Dakkari laws to risk inciting the alien race’s merciless wrath. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for my brother, and one careless mistake brings a horde of the nomadic, barbarian Dakkari straight to our doorstep, led by their powerful horde king - a cold, ruthless, battle-scarred warrior demanding retribution.

Consenting to a marriage of convenience with one of the Zelconians, a peaceful bird-like race, would secure the protection her village desperately needs. My name is Alice, and I live in the Bugpocalypse. I survived my first post-apocalyptic winter, and spring is here. That’s bad news! With warm weather comes the endless swarms of deadly bugs. I need to forage for food, but there’s just one little problem. Okay, so “little” isn’t the best word to describe the fierce Xarc’n warrior who is obsessed with me. Kaj’k is freakin’ huge! And his sharp claws, pointy fangs, and massive horns are scary. I reject his gift of food and flowers, but my massively muscled alien hunter doesn’t get the hint.

For the love of dragon!
I must say this is one of the most interesting books I have listened to in a while. RD managed to weave romance in a sort of post apocalyptic earth... something very few people manage to capture well.
The story is a little slow pace for my liking but it actually works. I would have liked for the first few chapters to be shorter but i stuck with it long enough to get caught in the story's web. I can imagine this is what would happen if dragons did somehow manage to invade the planet. After years of dragon rampages, nature finds a way to balance out the the power by linking a dragon to a human mate. Of course, the story wouldn't be as much fun if the female goes willingly. The story focuses more on resolving the heroine internal conflict, understandably because it's not everyday a human falls for another species. There is a bit of explicit sex scenes but for a paranormal book, it was a bit vanilla. Don't get me wrong she wasn't annoying but it would have been better if she didn't run hot one moment then cold the next..There are a few secondary characters but not enough back story about them to really make me like or dislike them. There were a few that got what they deserved! For a while I thought, RD was going to let them get away with their crap but lucky for me she didn't.
The narration was ok. I have listened to both narrators before and while they are not top of my list, they are good enough to keep my attention. To be honest, as a paranormal romance fan, I would say if you are going through a dry spell (I am right now.. sigh) give this book a shot. It's a couple of hours of entertainment and is really not that bad in my opinion.

My Dragon
Great book. It reminded me little of the Warriors of Hir by Willow Danes. The non ability to communicate was hilarious. Both narrators were great doing each characters point of view. Neither Kyle nor Claudia understood each other. At first she thought he wanted to eat her and he could not make her understand he wanted to be her mate. I love dragon stories and normally i prefer ones that have a balance of action and romance but even though these were more on the romance side, they were fantastic. I am currently listening to the second book.

Not much of a story, but bunches ‘o sex!
A good editor would have cut the repetitive angst, thoughts, bullshit, etc., and the book would been about half as long. This book was like porn, just enough of a (bad)story to prop up the sex scenes. I like sexy stuff as much as anyone, but a good story is mandatory.

Ugh... sappy female with too much internal conflict
I am sorry but it would seem if one was dealing with an apocalypse that people would be much stronger in mind and body.
This female is much too conflicted about everything dragon mate, sister, friend, human race. Seriously you are mated to a dragon go in and kick ass with your mate screw the people that screwed you. BTW...If your sister is too weak to survive in an apocalypse then HELLO tough love, she doesn't survive. Or here's one better...Teach her how to get by....
Story would be better if the heroine would grow a pair. Maybe the author should write of an older seasoned character instead of a young, weak and indecisive one.

Phenomenal story given the post-apocalyptic nature
I for one am not usually a fan of post-apocalyptic stories. I do however, love dragons not mindless bloodthirsty Godzilla in Tokyo dragons but majestic creatures such as in Dragon heart and McCaffrey's Dragon riders of pern those kind of dragons. This series so far seems to be a combination of both. I absolutely love Kyle's personality! I have not started the second book yet but I am hoping that it is not going to be a total standalone because the story was so good that I can't wait to see what's going to happen and Kyle and Claudia's future :-) fair warning the first part is a little slow while they're working out there communication differences but I strongly urge anyone who wants to listen to the story to give it a chance because it made me laugh it made me want to cry. I found myself talking back to the computer screen when Claudia was being especially obtuse I found myself feeling very very sorry for Kyle at times. But I definitely recommend this story and/or series for anyone who wants to read a beauty tames the beast type of story :-) my one complaint is that Claudia did not get to converse with her friend to help her understand the Dragon kind better. I am hoping reverently I am hoping fervently that they will get a chance to come together at some point I will admit that to me the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger that I'm desperately wishing will be taken care of in the second book.

Interesting start to the series but...
As a devout follower of Ruby's Ice Planet Barbarians, I was expecting a bit more world building and background. There is quite a bit in this book but somehow it doesn't have the same pace and interest the IPB series has. The characters are well laid out and you get to know their motivations really well. The dystopian society that Ruby creates is also fascinating and we get to meet a few other players in their town that help to lay the foundation. I want to know more about where the Drakoni came from and why but I guess you gotta leave something for later in the series.
In the meantime though, the 3 stars were on account of the inconsistencies. Maybe because Ruby did such a bang up job of creating the most amazing Ice Planet and back story I'm not expecting inconsistencies, but a few of them are there and they do pull me out of the story sometimes. For example, how does he know some of her thoughts but not others? How is it they land in the midst of a barracks and soldiers don't swarm him the minute he turns human? Little bits kept jumping out to me as I listened. I guess I've been spoiled by the IPB series because once I'm in those books, I'm literally in that world and completely immersed. I didn't feel like that with this one.
Having said that, it is a good story. Claudia and Kyle did make be bark out the odd laugh here and there. And you do want Kyle to literally take a bite out of the Captain of the Guard and the Mayor because they are such turds (excuse the 6 yr old language!) The narrators do a great job of bringing it to life though I did chuckle and roll my eyes a bit when Kyle's voice had to repeat the madness mantra a few too many times in every which way he could think of. Points to him for making it different each time!
I will be buying the 2nd in the series because I'm sure I'll learn a lot more about this new Drakoni-Human world Ruby's creating and frankly, I'm ever so curious to find out more. I really want to know what happens to Sasha and if Amy ever grows a spine, or always had one that never had the opportunity to grow.

Shockingly Rubbish!
I really wanted to like this book as I have been struggling to find a really good PNR book to listen to for a while after listening/reading Nalini Singh and Ilona Andrews and after reading reviews I thought here is a good one...how wrong was I!!! The heroine is beyond annoying and whiney. Nearly Half of the book the H and H don’t even talk it’s all about hand signs etc and lord when they do manage to talk he sounds like he is some cave man with limited intelligence.
Now I don’t mind any major sexual scenes but lord this was again like a soft porn of “me Tarzan you Jane”
Couldn’t finish the book - a wasted credit so don’t waste your credit or money!

Cute Dragon
I enjoyed this book. It was a little long winded but I stuck with it.
I do love the characters, who where brought to life perfectly by the narrators.
off to listen to book two.

Didn't Enjoy
Didn't like this book, thought the story pretty slow and a little farfetched. Couldn't get on with the narrator. Skipped some chapters in the hope it might get better. The begging ofthe book jumped and the end of the booked the same.

Hope for the next book?
The main female character was so annoying! Right up to the last chapter. I almost stopped this book a few times and yelled at my phone "I hate this woman" more than once. Has a great ending but omg so whinny and changed her mind every two seconds and took everything out on the dragon. Who I loved! His character was the best! I wished he had more Chapters in the book.

kinda of want my money back
this while story irritated me. i couldnt finish it. i really wanted to. here are my issues.
the female narrator makes the FMC sound incredibly condescending for every sentance.
the FMC is really annoying. talking about how gentle and caring and etc the MMC then pitches fits about her being scared blah blah blah in the next instance. i just couldnt do it i couldnt listen anymore to the FMC's childish annoying thoughts. ugh. i actually have a headache.
I believe the story could be better if the author didnt drag out the FMC's stubborness for everything.

****About Time Ruby****
OMG i nearly flipped when i found out Ruby has an audio book released :P I have been waiting forever and now it's here. This book is realistic in a futuristic way post Armageddon without dragons of course but this is fiction so it's totally awesome to have dragons in them. Kyle and Claudia are amazing together, he needed to claim her so that the madness that crippled his kind will be eased. i totally adore the narrative Noelle portrayal of Claudia is hilarious , sassy and feisty, and Jeremy's voice i imagined to be exactly what a dragon shifters sounds like. you are both excellent narrators and can"t wait to listen to more.

So much wasted potential
The main character, Claudia was very annoying. The story line did not make sense, and was very repetitive, characters did not behave in a believable way. I struggled to finish it.
it's a shame because I loved most of this writer's other books.
