I'm a fan of this series, but...

...FIRE ON THE FENS is disappointing compared to the first eight novels in the series.

Gripping Story

I thoroughly enjoy this series, and this book is one of the best. The narrator is wonderful, and brings the characters to life. I can't wait for the next book.

This series keeps getting better

I enjoyed the first several books as well, but I think this one is my favorite to date. I love the setting in the Fens, the characters, and the mystery. (I did figure out whodunnit early enough to be a little impatient with the characters lagging behind, but there was so much to come that I didn’t mind too much.) There were some interesting diversions and red herrings, too.

Overall, highly recommended for anyone who enjoys British police procedurals. Henrietta Meire is a superb narrator. I’m really enjoying hearing the regional Lincolnshire accents.

Another Winner

The story continues on and doesn't let you down. Ellis keeps you engaged and Meire continues to narrate the book exceptionally.

Fire on the Fens

Have read all of Jackman & Evans series, love them, decided to read the Fens series, which I haven't read in order and absolutely enjoyed it. Joy has an addictive way of writing that draws you in and you just can't stop once you have started. The narration is excellent.

Fire Within Bested the Fire Outside

Another fascinating detective story. Fire is both literally and figuratively described. The story shows the destructive, cleansing, transformative, & inspirational aspects of "fire". The obvious destruction in the structures and those effected with a loss is clearly seen. Sparked within each character is the determination and the internal questions about life. Law enforcement runs toward danger, and make personal sacrifices everyday. That is the law enforcement I know. Love the cross over characters and stories from Joy Ellis's Jackman/Evans series. Great narration as always.

Problems with the voice actor .

Great story, well written characterisation good
I found it difficult to follow; the narrator, the voice actor did not a sufficient range to play the parts. Sometimes it was hard to link the voices to the characters. I found the voice tedious at times even screeching.
It was frustrating to try to unravel the intricacies of the plot through the range of voices. The skills of a great voice actor include the ability to play a range of voices with different genders, ages, accents. These skills were underdeveloped.
A good story, suitably distracting but I will avoid this narrator in the future.

Another good story

I enjoyed the story, but found the narration off-putting. The narrator had a lovely voice, but was lacking in intonation and vocal variation. It sounded very flat .

Oh my goodness - this narrator!

I appreciate that this far into the series it would be difficult to change to another narrator- but where is the quality control over the most basic of pronunciation - very annoying!! If I were Joy Ellis I would be furious.

Pronunciation

How on earth did Henrietta Meer get this gig! She has very little grasp of the English language for example curate is pronounced cyoorit not cyoor8!
It’s most annoying and spoils the story

Has the author literally lost the plot? And as for the narrator…

I’ve been binge listening to this series. All along the bizarre pronunciation by the narrator has really grated at times, and then in the last book Nikki seemed at times to discover her Scottish roots in her Norfolk accent…. But then along comes Fire on the fens.

The author seems to have forgotten that when Nikki and Joseph got together they were deemed a strange pairing not least because of his very strong religion. ‘The priest’ I believe he was called at one point in book 1 or 2 contrasting with Nikki’s single minded hunting of all things drug.

But in this book the narrator says Joseph is not really religious. Really? Did he have some sort of faith crisis that has been kept from us?

And then there is the increasingly bizarre pronunciation- not being able to pronounce ‘curate’ among so many other things has meant I’ve finally thrown in the towel.

Whatever happens to you Nikki and Joseph I hope you find someone who can correctly pronounce whatever it is! Good luck!

Series gets more gripping as it progresses.

This series is fantastic and gets better and better with every book. As the series progresses each book gets more gripping. This one really kept me guessing and the way the team work so well together is amazing. There constant determination to not give up and find out the truth is really well portrayed and makes you want to know what is happening. It is great to see more permanant supporting characters coming into the series to enhance what is already a good team. The character development is also fantastic and a great draw for the series.

Burning revenge

This story is all about revenge being a dish best served cold. The perpetrator coldly plans the fires to seek revenge for a crime that he didn’t have the full facts for. His father’s lies and deception have lead to this young man’s mental instability. There are ‘suggestions’ from the higher ups that this case is too sensitive to continue investing. Fortunately for the victims and their families, Nikki, Joseph and the crew do some unofficial work until their evidence is overwhelming enough that they are given the go ahead to continue.
It wasn’t until the climax had almost arrived that I worked out a connection between the two main stories. I love the interactions amongst the characters and the feeling of being invested in their lives as a reader. I sincerely hope there is more to come in this series.

A fiery feud

I really enjoy these detective Nikki Galena stories and I definitely should make an effort to read them in order. This one involves a tragic revenge plot involving fire and it culminates in a conflagration of lies and deceit. Brilliant writing ensures there is never a dull moment and the quirky characters give an effective distraction from the somber subject. This detective series just gets better and better.

Enjoyable Read

Really enjoyed this one. The storyline is complex, but not overly-so, and the characters are wonderful as they always are. Will be sad to end their story with the next (last) book. This entire series has been a great collection and one I would recommend to anyone who loves a bit of crime thriller and wants to get into a good series.

She's done it again!

i admit I also downloaded the Audible narration and listened over 50% but the addion of the accents only accentuates the Author's brilliant painting of the Fens. I don't believe there are really so many murders on the Fens but you will fall in love with her characters and be engrossed by the mystery.

Compelling story but narration detracts

This is a great mystery story with characters I have come to know and love over a series of consistently strong books. Even Joy Ellis’ masterful dialogue doesn’t save the audio-book version, however. I listened to the whole thing because I wanted to know how it would end, but did so with gritted teeth. If you like Richmond from The IT Crowd, this narrator’s style may appeal. Otherwise, give it a miss.

Too contrived

Not bad not fantastic, an easy listen but the story is not really believable. To be begrudged for so long and to commit unthinkable acts as a result of it was way over my head. Will not try again by this author.

Good plot left wanting a little...

The plot of this story is quite gripping but I found the dialogue to expositional too often, & sometimes not believable or life-like enough. I could sense the ‘writing’ in it too much instead of being engrossed in the story. Some parts of the writing, especially dialogue, felt a little clichéd. I enjoyed the performance mostly but would have loved a bit more differentiation in voices.

Not for me. I struggled to finish it...generic characters and storyline with nothing to special to save it...narration did not help at all.
