Publisher's Summary

At 43, Holden Barnett is getting along just fine. His job as a pilot keeps him from getting restless, and he’s got a man who doesn’t want promises for the future. One phone call from his estranged sister changes everything. She needs his help, so Holden drops everything and heads to Harmony, a small town in Briar County, which represents everything he’s tried to avoid in life.

Monroe Covington is 45 and happy. He loves his life - running his store, helping at his family’s farm, and spending his days with his best friend, Lindsey, and their son, Wyatt. Sure, half the town likes to forget he’s gay, and he’d love for the queer population to be bigger, but Roe makes do. He misses dating, relationships, and a man to hold at night, but at least he gets new eye candy when Holden, the brother of the woman who’s renting his cabin, shows up.

The attraction is instant, the friendship not far behind, but between Holden’s initial relationship status, family complications, and the two of them wanting different things, they’re a disaster waiting to happen…only it doesn’t feel that way, not with how much time they spend talking, laughing, and eventually, tumbling into bed, a field, or the back of a truck together. The closer they get, the more Holden realizes that just being fine isn’t enough, and Roe begins to see that his life isn’t as complete as he thought. Now, if they could only sort out the rest of it....

Firefly Lane is a small town, strangers-to-friends-to-lovers summer romance with no cheating, mature characters who talk out their problems, like to work with their hands, and have amazing chemistry. Did I mention they watch movies in the company of goats?

Good Story but …

What I love about Riley Hart is present in this book…. Different types of men and variations that show human side of life and love without stereotypes .. this book especially is a love story about two men who meet and fall in love there is no dramatics or outrageous storylines that require suspension of disbelief and frankly it might be the sweetest story of hers I’ve read

However I DNF the audiobook. I had to stop and download the KU book because although Kale Williams has a great voice … he doesn’t alter his tone enough to fit the situation or even attempt to make the two MC’s voices different and by the time they were finally together it became impossible for me to tell who was speaking or whose chapter we were on. When they started to have intimacy I had no idea what was happening or even that they were steaming up the screen. I got frustrated and stopped at Chapter 20 and just read the book.

I don't think so.

Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: if a gay man decided to be irresponsible enough to deliberately bring a child into the world with his female best friend, he would not accomplish this by having sex with her. Period. Honestly, I should have read the Amazon reviews before buying this, because the top-rated review there says something very similar. I wouldn't have bought it.

So the book was already working at a disadvantage with me. I gave it a chance to recover, though, and was it able to overcome this? Well, no, not really. It might have been able to if it were a better book, though. There isn't all that much plot to speak of, but essentially the book is about Holden, an airline pilot, who has come to help out his loser sister whose worthless husband has just left her and their son. Or maybe she kicked him out, who knows. She's renting a cabin from Roe, the aforementioned gay guy who consciously had a child with his female best friend through sexual intercourse (I can't stress enough how ludicrous that is).

The dialogue in the book is all very trite and would feel completely appropriate for, say, a Hallmark Channel movie of the week. The characters are all tiresomely self-effacing and overmodest and virtually every conversation could just be boiled down to "I've been kicked hard by life, but I'm surviving." It got old really fast. Holden's conversations with his nephew sound like someone reading out of a manual about how to be a good father figure. The nephew seems like he was bought at a bargain bin sale on angry young teenagers who secretly just need to be loved. The sister, who I repeat is a complete loser but everyone thinks she's super strong for some reason, might as well be wearing a sweatshirt that reads "I'm doing my best, but it's hard." Everything from the characters to the dialogue to the backstory--that darn "gay guy having sex with his female best friend thing in order to create a life" thing--seems artificial somehow.

I'm not a huge fan of Riley Hart, to be honest. I liked The Endgame a lot, but the sequel sort of ruined it because it showed she has no real concept of how male sexuality works in the real world (as opposed to, say, on twitter, or in romance novels). This is another perfect example of that. I'm going to chalk up The Endgame's high quality to a fluke and say that I'm pretty much done buying things by this author.

I want to be Holdens & Monroe's friend .

Let me start off by saying Riley Hart is one of my favorite authors. she always comes through. just like she did with this story. Omgosh, Holden & Monroe story is so good. Their chemistry, and Maturity in this story, wonderful. I want to be friends with them. Kale Williams did a good job narrating and bringing these characters to life. I highly suggest you to listen to this wonderful love story.

Wow

I read Firefly Lane on Kindle and just had to listen to the Audio version for full effect
Kale Williams brought the People of Harmony to life.
Thank You Kale W. for a job well done.
I look forward to the Audio version of Sunday's Best and hopefully Kale is the Narrator.
I most definitely recommend adding this novel to your collection, it's worth the $$ and/or credit.
Happy Listening 🎶 ☺

Great story for our times.

I found the sex a bit too explicit for my taste, so I FFd thru those parts. I did love the story tho. Today's world needs more inclusive narratives of all types.

Love the story, but change the narrator

This story had character, love, low angst. It was what I needed. perfect. However , the narrator is not the best fit. It took me going through the first 3 chapters for me to figure out there were 2ale character's story being told. Had to start over. Also had to rewind so many times because I couldn't differentiate who was speaking at any given time. Monotone reading. No inflection change even when a joke is told, someone yelled, or even a female talking. For the next book, please someone else. This almost made me return the book. Enjoyed it otherwise

And he was the narrator for all of them!! My favorite was Hard Knox omg the best book ever!! Such a great book and griffins place was second favorite those are forever on my repeat list!!! That being said in those 2 books I felt the chemistry and love btween the MCs so well! This book was cute and you get that they fall for each other and fall with them!! I don’t think this is one of my favs but still sweet and lovely!

Descent into Silly

Good premise, pilot and business owner, older and experienced MCs, sounds sensible, but story descends into silly where they can't seem to make decisions. The single narrator, excellent though he is, can only do so much to voice these individuals, but's it hard to tell them apart, as their actions and attitudes are so similar. The sister just sounds demented. DID NOT ENJOY THIS STORY
