Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Publisher's Summary
Mal and the crew take receipt of a sealed crate that they are being paid to transport to Badger, no questions asked. Yet once their cargo is safely stowed aboard, River insists Mal should "space" it out of the airlock, for it contains, she insists, ghosts.
With supplies running low, the crew desperately needs another payday but soon finds itself paralyzed by hallucinations of their deepest hopes and desires, so vivid they cannot be distinguished from reality. River is the only one unaffected. She desperately tries to awaken her crew mates, while the fantasies turn sour and the ship begins to spin out of control.

Torture Porn
This book is well narrated, but the story is torture porn fantasy. Disappointing as the other novels are well written fare. Even though the quality of the writing remains the same, the content does not give the same value. If you are of a sensitive mind, disregard this entry as it will not fulfill your firefly verse fantasys.

Disturbing.
I found the characters didn't remind me of the crew of Serenity in the least beyond their names. Furthermore, the imagery in the story was imaginatively described and extremely disturbing. Not at all why I liked Firefly. It was a real challenge to even finish the story, as it just kept going on and on. The story left me in a sour mood. Didn't like it at all. This was NOT Firefly.

Just not what we needed
In a world that is in need of story telling and characters that are begging to be fleshed out we get dreams and wishes instead. I'm sorry, but this is not what I expected. I wanted additional adventures that would leave me wanting more.
The truly bright spot is the narration by James Foster is amazing. The nuances of each character are spot on.
I did REALLY enjoy the first 2 books by James Lovegrove. Let's see where Tim Lebbon takes us.

Story was just boring, The end saved it
The performance was done spectacularly as have all the Firefly books, but this story was just boring. The last hour was pretty good, but honestly it was a rough go to get there. I didn't feel like the Verse grew any for me in this story despite the attempt to grow characters backstories with the dreams. Win some you lose some, I like what they seemed to be trying to do with this book I just don't think it worked,

Storyline Of This Episode Was Not For Me
Spoiler - stop reading.
I didn’t like this, but probably for an odd reason. You may enjoy this episode just fine. The story goes off into sub-plots for each character that are effectively separate dreams with individual little stories. I just didn’t find them to be worth my time. They are just dreams that are pointless to the overall Firefly plot. It’s a bit like when a friend starts telling me about a dream and I just don’t care much.
I stopped about halfway through, so again you may love this episode. I’ll still buy the next episode because I like the overall series and these audiobooks are done well.

Somewhat derivative... :(
I enjoyed James Anderson Foster's other efforts far more, stick to his first two Firefly books. I felt like they expanded on the world and characters, on the other hand, this story feels unnecessary and was languorous in it's telling.

I loved the first two books, but this wasn't a firefly book, it had zero capers and wasn't shiny. The overall story could have been an interesting premise if it wasn't based around the firefly crew. I really hope I'm wrong and everyone loves it, so we get more firefly.

Weakest story in the series so far.
I'm absolutely loving the Firefly book series, but that being said I felt this was the weakest story so far. That's not to say it was bad; it still offered some excellent insight into the characters, building where the TV series left off and bridging the gap to the film. But it just dragged a little for me, lacking the pace of previous instalments.
James Anderson Foster's performance was faultless as ever, capturing the tone and intonation of every character wonderfully, especially Mal. On to the next book!

Good story. Author has done better in prior books
Be in no doubt. This is a good book. It's more good at the start and at the end when we are dealing with reality. The middle part dragged on considerably. I was at times bored by it but stick with it, as I am a Firefly fan. It improved again toards the end when things got real again.
This is the third book by this author, writing Firefly stories. I hope he does more. It's clear he knows his stuff and I look forward to more coming. I have my fingers crossed.
