Publisher's Summary

A dangerous expedition. Extraterrestrial alliances. Unpredictable enemies.

Colton Beck has six months to live. He works for the Angor near Los Angeles, aware that any day could be his last.

The Angor arrived 20 years ago, resolved to help mankind survive, but not everyone believes their motives are honorable.

When the Angor offer humanity a colony world, Colton is determined to see another planet before his final breath. He’s been diagnosed with Xeno, a rare disorder that surfaced with the Angor’s arrival, but he won’t let this stop him.

With the help of his old friend Indie Hart, now the single most powerful human on Earth, he joins the Expedition to Dicore. They access the River, an alien technology that allows nearly instantaneous travel between worlds, and their universe is quickly expanded. What they find on Dicore is far from idyllic, and Colton struggles to navigate their new existence while coping with his impending death.

First Life is a gripping science fiction adventure tale from the best-selling author of The Event, Lost Contact, and Final Days.

Give me more!

I could not stop listening to this book. I devoured it in about a day. I really enjoyed the story and the characters and all the intrigue. This would make a really great movie or TV series. The descriptions were really vivid and the characters multi-layered. There is so much going on and I didn't see ANY of it coming. Bring on book 2! This is my first time listening to this narrator and aside from a few minor things, I would definitely listen to him again.

Fantastic everything I Iove in this genre and more

This is one of those great scifi audiobooks you only find maybe 3-4 times per year, it's really good and I've become very picky recently. Along with the scifi theme the mystery and intrigue are strong I could not put it down.

I will not give away any spoilers so during the first chapter or two you find out what I'm saying here next -... aliens have come to earth and they bring technologies that humans are grateful for so a type of alien/human accord is signed. Fast forward 20 years and aliens ask humans to go open a new colony on a unknown planet. That is a very basic overview there is much more but I won't risk spoiling anything for you.

Everything in this book is done so well from the characters to the world building and you feel the emotions the author was going for, the character interactions seem very realistic I really like the authors style here it's plain spoken and believable again with strong emotions. So no spoilers but I will say all the scifi stuff is very cool and it kept getting better and better as you learn more and like I said it is extremely hard to stop the listening session. The narrator has also nailed it he is excellent in every way from his reading voice to his characters and pacing it is very well done

I suggest you begin this book only when you have plenty of time to keep listening, this is Nathan Hystad's best book and he already has some really good ones but this is another level up in every way so congrats to him and thank you.

Hidden Gem

This is a great book. I can't wait for the next one! The story is interesting and the scope of the story is expensive.

The humans were less believable than the aliens

Hey guess what? I am human. So I know humans. Aliens not so much so they get pass. I wanted to like this story it has some really cool nuggets of alien races, some cool alien monsters, and a premise that ALMOST wanted to believe. The humans in this story were just unbelievable. The main character who we get a lot of inner monologue from reminds me of some teenage character from Teen Lit --- and that would be cool except he is 30 something and we are supposed to believe that when under pressure that people look up to him. Then there is the super hacker --- Come on we all saw independence day and this single biggest fault of that film was them hacking the alien space ship. They could have at lease hand waved why she had the skills to connect to the alien tech with alien language that she didn't know. A single sentence like "I went to the Angor magnet school for computer science" and I could have at least believed her... ohhh and SHE is an actual teenager and was somehow choosen by our alien overlords for some special mission. The actual aliens mission is never fully revealed (well maybe it was in the last hour of the book - I couldn't finish it) which could have been interesting cliff hanger for book 2, but the author instead decided to throw twists and unlikely unbelievable coincidences. Not to spoil anything for those who may listen, but I quit the book when one of the characters unbelievable Machavellian plot twist was introduced. Thank you for introducing that in this book and not starting off book 2 with it.... I might have not yet quit the book series in disgust.

The narrator was pretty good and maybe this is the producers fault, but the characters mom and another character sounded so much alike while the others were very distinct that it kept throwing me off.

Screeching Halt

I really wanted to like this book. It starts out good. A family is at a baseball game and all of a sudden an alien spaceship appears. 20 years later the son is working for the aliens but he has a deadly disease that the aliens caused by altering the atmosphere. Good story. Then, there’s an announcement by the aliens that a select few humans will be accepted into a new program on a distant plant and the diseased man ( who has only 6 months to live) has managed to be accepted into the program by tracking down his high school flame. The high school flame is the assistant director (Director of what I don't know) and manipulates her ex-boyfriend's physical exam. Then, the book comes to a screeching halt. Boredom City. I fell asleep listening to this nonsense and when I woke up, it was like nothing happened. I'm so annoyed to have wasted a credit.

Creative and Addictive Series Opening

Nathan Hystad has done it again! He is such a masterful writer. His sci fi is amazing, and he is good at creating characters to relate to or revile against!

This story is full of so many plot twists that I am afraid of ruining a wonderful, or not so wonderful suprise. So in an effort to avoid spoilers, I will leave this review assuring you to trust this work of sci fi gold and enjoy!

Well done

The characters are interesting. Each has layers that get revealed as the story unfolds. Although I think book 1 has just scratched the surface.
The story is interesting. The narrator did a fine job. I will be purchasing the next in the series when it’s available. Overall well done.

Could Have Been Mediocre, Ended Up Poor

Started off okay, but by the end it had gotten completely ridiculous. You also get a previous of the next instalment at the end of this book and that gets even worse. It's like the author hasn't planned the story out properly and is just making stuff up as they go along. The result is that people don't act in plausible ways and the story isn't believable.

Wanted some serious sci-fi, but this is not it.

Not what I expected

I have been looking for something different to listen to for a while & decided to try this one. I was a bit put off by the narrator’s tone at first but soon found myself getting into the story once I got used to the narrating. Really enjoyed the mystery in this one - had a hard time switching off in the later part of the book! Very much looking forward to the next book!
