Publisher's Summary

Start the home-buying process with your eyes wide open - and outsmart the world’s most common financial trap!

Buying a house is more than just trading money for a deed. Between choosing your real estate agent and lender, picking the right neighborhood, and finally, choosing the house itself, you're suddenly making more decisions than you ever thought possible. All this while trying to keep a level head for what may be the biggest purchase of your life!

Speaking of big purchases - buying a house isn’t always a good investment. Your home can either be a destroyer of wealth and freedom or a generator of the same. This book will show you not only how to afford your first home, but also how to make a decision that gives you the most financial flexibility possible.

Scott Trench and Mindy Jensen of the BiggerPockets Money Podcast have been buying and selling houses for a collective 30 years. In First-Time Home Buyer, they’ll give you a comprehensive overview of the home-buying process, so you can consider all of your options and avoid pitfalls while jumping into the big, bad role of homeowner.

In this book, you’ll learn:

  • Steps you can take (and early decisions you can make) to turn your first home into a future cash-flowing investment
  • How much house can you actually afford - aka, not the breaking point of your budget
  • When to buy a house, renting vs. buying, and everything else you should know about the housing market
  • How to get your financial “house” in order while preparing for your big purchase (See what we did there?)
  • Fixer-upper houses and home renovation - are they really worth it?
  • What to look for when buying a house, and what to absolutely avoid
  • How to choose a real estate agent and a lender that have your best interests in mind
  • All the steps to buying a house - from loan pre-approval, to submitting offers, to home inspections, to the closing process, and everything in between

Funny and Punny

As someone saving to buy my first home, this book was invaluable! Especially the part about real estate agents, finding the best rates for a mortgage, and how emotional homebuying gets.

The performance was very well done and very easy to listen to, especially the puns… This is a must read for anyone thinking about buying their first home!

Don’t buy an anchor… Buy a springboard to a great financial future!

Great combination of broad overviews and detailed tips

They covered a complex topic wonderfully.
Very easy and enjoyable listen. They took a broad 3,000 foot view on the entire process, provided actionable information on a TON of key specifics, and good intel on where to turn for more information that will be specific to the reader’s own circumstances where it was needed. Books like this can often be either a slog through hyper specific details that a novice can’t understand, or a bunch of non specific jargon that sounds good but doesn’t give you anything actionable to work with. This book avoided both of those traps wonderfully with a nice dose of humor to go with it.
Great read for a prospective first time home buyer.

good book a lot of info for a new buyer but..

great book for first-time home buyer every detail means alot for a new buyer the only thing I don't agree with is the 700+ credit score.

they suggest you have a great credit score of 700 or more but being a first-time home buyer that's going to be a little high for a lot of us remember you only need 580 or more to get an fha like my self I'm working on my first home with a 669 other than that great book.

Can’t Get Through This Book

Purchased this for up-to-date info on the wild housing market of 2021. Found this to have too much emphasis on being funny. Not enough substance. Full of analogy. I’m looking elsewhere.

Great Content!

Some great concepts and explanations. And some humour to boot! While I’m not in the US, I still got great value out of this as the concepts are pretty much the same, just have different names. There is some US specific terms, rules and regulations, but we have very similar ones here in Australia. Great Job! It left me wanting more.
