Publisher's Summary

What happens when one of America’s most beloved biographers writes his own biography?

For five-time New York Times best-selling author Eric Metaxas, the answer is Fish Out of Water: A Search for the Meaning of Life - a soaring, lyrical, and often mischievous account of his early years, in which the astute Queens-born son of Greek and German immigrants struggles to make sense of a world in which he never quite seems to fit.

While millions know Metaxas as a celebrated author, the witty host of Socrates in the City, and a nationally syndicated radio personality, here he reveals a personal story few have known. The scion of two families with very different traditions, he enjoyed their affection and support through his riotous but successful years at Yale, yet later felt abandoned as he drifted toward an abyss of meaninglessness from which he barely escaped.

Along the way, Metaxas introduces us to an unforgettable troupe of Runyonesque characters who join this quintessentially first-generation American boy on his odyssey, underscoring how simultaneously funny, serious, happy, sad, and meaningful life can be.

Reliving my childhood

I was born in 1961 and grew up in a Christian home in Michigan. My family heritage was long established in America. So the similarities of Eric and my life couldn’t be more different but as I listened to Eric, I relived so many times of my childhood and post graduation of depression and wondering what now that I immensely enjoyed the book. Eric paints such vivid pictures of life. There were several times of laughter and sharing the stories with family members. It was also a wonderful depiction of how God draws us to himself each in our own way so that we can hear him.

When is Part 2 coming?

This was one of the sweetest, kindest, funniest books I've read. Eric's view of the world is so precious and naive at times, and hilarious at others times. His faith was/is truly like a child's. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. It's a sweet compilation (road map) of stories about his life. Interesting perspective about what life/the world was like back in the day, also.

My mom heart broke for him in a couple stories. Makes me realize how we've become such helicopter parents. His sweet thoughtful vulnerability throughout is heart warming.

God is great and His love for us is immeasurable, how he speaks to each of us individually is told in such a sweet way. I realize I've probably used "sweet " too many times in this review... but it's the perfect word for this book. I cannot wait to listen to Part 2.

Enthralling and funny, but try 1.5X

Eric is a great storyteller, and captures very well a prolonged struggle with whether life itself has meaning or is meaningless. But it’s done as a thoughtful consideration of a completely relatable life story, rather than as a philosophical treatise. And it never fails to wonderfully pull out the humor from these stories.
He reads it very carefully and clearly, but I just couldn’t take the pace. Speeding it up to 1.5x was just about perfect for me.

Listening to the book read by the author, Eric Metaxas, is a treat! I don’t want to spoil it for you, but let’s just say that all of his talent comes out while he is reading his memoirs!

Lamassie

Thank you Eric Metaxes for being the God send you are through the books you write. This one brings it home to me. I loved the stories and authentic accents you used to describe your dad. And the songs your mom sang with you and the hilarious Italian Kitchen. Please keep up the good work. You and your family are in my prayers.

Enjoyed thoroughly

A writer I am not so m review will not go into great detail. I enjoyed this book and loved hearing the author read it! Nostalgic. Eric, through his words took me to each place he wrote about. The most hilarious was on the train with the Frenchman!! I’m hoping 2 of my sons will listen to this book, Eric’s humor and dialog I believe they will enjoy and appreciate.

Thank you Eric for sharing your story and I look forward to the next book and hearing about your walk with the Lord.

Missing Ch. 35

I like the book, but the most important Ch. seems to be missing! Ch. 35 is only 12 seconds long.... From ch. 36 it seems to contain a dramatic conversion.

Fantastic and hilarious and deep

I have loved and appreciated Eric Metaxas for years but it was really a delight to listen to his book… His first chapter of his life… There were many laugh out loud moments often followed by heart grabbing, sentimental and serious questions and experiences. I love when an author reads his own book for audible! He or she just knows exactly the tone of voice that they meant it in and there’s just nothing like it! Eric is an incredibly talented writer!

Thank you for generously sharing your journey.

I listened to A Fish Out of Water as Eric Metaxas narrated his personal story. As one who rarely listens to books, I’m thankful that I chose to listen to this one rather than reading it. So much would be lost without his expert and entertaining narration. I found myself laughing out loud often and I feel as if I’ve made a new friend. My faith has been strengthened and encouraged by hearing about the process of Eric’s conversion and how God chose and pursued him. I pray that God will speak through this story to bring many people to himself. Thank you again for sharing your story with us.

Excellent autobiographical story

Really enjoyed this story of Eric's life from his early years until he found his true identity. Very well read by the author, whose love of words shines through in different ways. His descriptions of people and places are very inventive and out of the ordinary. He is a literary scholar but conveys his messages with humour and insight. Bless you, Eric! We watch your current videos with great interest.

A WORTHWHILE CHRISTIAN READ

Amusing anecdotes. Storyline somewhat longwinded and drawn out. I would have liked more of the aftermath of the author’s touching Testimony.

Smart and funny at times too smart!

Interesting life story that flowed and made you love the characters real charm. A bit slow at time with an overuse of highbrow English. However, was glad to have listened to it especially the last couple of chapters made it worth while.

Absolutely recommended

Loved it. I was originally drawn to Eric's story by the promise of an insight into the modernist and vacuous philosophy of university culture in the 1980s that led us all away from our faith into a meaningless, humanist existence. Even more enticing was the story of his journey back to the truth. His erudite style and genuine humility coupled with his affable yet sometimes eccentric humour made this book a true joy to listen to. I absolutely recommend it.

The performance lets the content down.

I love Eric Metaxes! His life story is really entertaining, but man, I struggled listening to the staccato in the reading. It sounded almost as if he sometimes turned into a computer generated voice. I will recommend reading the book, not listening to it.
