Publisher's Summary

Flash Fire is the explosive sequel to The Extraordinaries by New York Times and USA Today best-selling author TJ Klune!

Through bravery, charm, and an alarming amount of enthusiasm, Nick landed himself the superhero boyfriend of his dreams. Now instead of just writing stories about him, Nick actually gets to kiss him. On the mouth. A lot. But having a superhero boyfriend isn’t everything Nick thought it would be - he’s still struggling to make peace with his own lack of extraordinary powers.

When new Extraordinaries begin arriving in Nova City - siblings who can manipulate smoke and ice, a mysterious hero who can move objects with their mind, and a drag queen superhero with the best name and the most-sequined costume anyone has ever had- it’s up to Nick and his friends Seth, Gibby, and Jazz to determine who is virtuous and who is villainous.

And new Extraordinaries aren’t the only things coming to light. Long-held secrets and neglected truths are surfacing that challenge everything Nick knows about justice, family, and being extraordinary. Which is a lot to handle when Nick really just wants to finish his self-insert bakery AU fanfic.

Will it all come together in the end or will it all go down in flames?

TJ has better works. Micheal Lesley great again!

Michael Lesley was amazing once again. His ability to tell a story and bring the written word to life is stunning to the point you forget it's just him doing all the narration.

Like the first book this one is a bit slow till the end. Though this book you could skip to chapter 11 without missing anything or taking away from the story. TJ Klune has a gift for telling a simple story in an entertaining way. Unfortunately, his keep it simple style worked against his desire to pull in relevant cultural topics that are anything but simple. His desire to bring to lite injustice by the hands of the police felt forced and a hinsight thought that was poorly squeezed into the book every few chapters. It was a complete 180 from his last book for some of his characters to suddenly hate police and there was no character development to justify any of his other characters having a disdain for them. So it felt odd to have all his characters, who weren't the villains, bash the police over and over. Even the police officers who we were supposed to like hated themselves for being police and accused all their coworkers of being evil. IDK. it came off as TJ lazily injecting current events to be a pseudo "ally" of who he thinks his audience is, to being a toned down version of Firestar, his reporter vilian. I would suggest if you want to bring up an importaint issue more than a passing jab to put some research into it and have some character development so it betters your story and doesn't come off as a soft Twitter rant.

And so it continues

I love TJ Klune's writing. I am a BIG fan of his adult books but absolutely adore that I get to share this one with my teenage boys. And what better way than to road trip and listen to these stories. Michael Lesley and his voices portray a wealth of character. It's so understandable why TJ Klune picks him to narrate. Not only am I, but the whole family, is counting down the days to the next installment.

TJ NO!

If ever a match was made it heaven, it would be TJ Klune's words and Michael Lesley's narration. Together these 2 are perfection. Michael has done such a phenomenal job with this series so far, can't wait for Heat Wave! He really brings Nick to life, along with the rest of the characters. He makes it so that you feel like you're living through everything right there with Nick- every sweet moment, every cringe moment, every moment that hits your right in the feels..

Original review from when I first read the book-

4.5*

TJ, no.

Ok, I guess that's not an acceptable review, although I'd really like to leave it at that!

The cliffhanger at the end of The Extraordinaries had me impatient for this book, and let me tell you, T.J. Klune did not disappoint. Not in the least. Flash Fire was all that and a bag of Skwinkles Salsagheti. (I still need to track some down to try.) And talk about cliffhanger- if I thought it was tough waiting for today to get here, how the h e double hockey sticks am I supposed to survive until 2022??? You evil genius TJ!

Oh how I adore Nick Bell. Like completely and utterly adore and would do anything to protect him from this cold, cruel, ugly world. But as adorably clueless as he still is, Nick really comes into his own in Flash Fire and I don't think he'd actually need my protection. No, scratch that, he still needs protecting, if only from himself.

There is a lot packed into FF- action, suspense, silliness, love and friendship, surprises, so many surprises. This book gave me so much more than I ever anticipated, and I loved it so very much. It's laugh out loud hilarious at times- see chapters 1 & 2 for reference. It's so endearing, thanks to the sweetest romance between Nick and Seth, I can hardly contain my heart. The friendships between Nick, Seth, Jazz, and Gibby are still the best, I love how they always have each others backs, no matter what. Like The Extraordinaries, it's full of feels, especially when it comes to Nick and his dad. They have such a wonderful relationship, even when things between them get tough, and they definitely do in this book.

I know there were quite a few people upset with how certain things were handled in book one, when it came to Aaron Bell and the way the police force was portrayed. I think most people will be satisfied with the way TJ addressed that in this book, although I'm sure there'll still be those who won't think it's enough. I appreciate that he took the feedback to heart and made some changes-still giving us that heartwarming father/son relationship which is so pivotal to these books, while at the same time having Nick realize that his father isn't infallible.

With this series TJ Klune has created a world I know I'll never want to leave, I will always want more. Hopefully 2021 will continue to fly by because I cannot wait to see what it's in store for Nick, Seth, Gibby, and Jazz. If that ending is any indication, it's sure to be explosive!

it's good but...

I'm only so far into this book and I really liked the first book, I love Nick and the characters! I just feel that the police brutality thing and all the other current events type stuff was glossed over and rushed! I feel like much thought wasn't put into it. This is very real thing for a lot of people and it should be handled a bit better than this. I feel like not a lot of research was done and kinda just came out of nowhere. I just wish more thought was put into that stuff.
I'll definitely update this review when I finish maybe it was just that part.

Loved Everything!

I am so into the story and the narrators voice, he really brings it to life in a way that’s so much better than what I could conjure in my mind.

We’re queer and we are here!
