Publisher's Summary

Flashman must choose - politcs in London or slave trading in Africa - not that it matters really in this hilarious third installement of the Flashman Papers.

When Flashman was inveigled into a game of pontoon with Disraeli and Lord George Bentinck, he was making an unconscious choice about his own future - would it lie in the House of Commons or the West African slave trade? Was there, for that matter, very much difference?

Once again Flashman's charm, cowardice, treachery, lechery, and fleetness of foot see the lovable rogue triumph by the skin of his chattering teeth.

Critic Reviews

"The Flashman books bristle with action…and they are very, very funny." ( The Times)
"George Macdonald Fraser is going great guns, and, happy thought, he still has some fifty years of the rascal's misdeeds to regale us with." ( Daily Telegraph)

Re visit.

I love the Flashman books and re read the series about once a year.Having started audible recently I have found a new way to enjoy these stories. It's a bit like having a favourite book turned into a film. You get a different experience but, unlike a film, you don't lose any of the story. Colin Mace makes a good fist of portraying the old scoundrel and valiant attempt at the other characters and accents. My only disappointment is the lack of footnotes. The great thing about these books is they are embedded in historical fact.G.M.G's research is meticulous ,you can learn from them.It is particularly noticeable in this volume because, unless you speak latin, you lose a lot of one characters meaning. I have downloaded most of the rest of the series and am looking forward to revisiting them.

Deceptively clever

GMDF. Cleverly exposes the true horrors of slavery by viewing it through the unsentimental eyes of flashman .

Flashman books are without comedy equal

Having read the Flashman papers some 20+ years ago, to revisit them as an audiobook is like reading them again for the first time. Had me laughing out loud at the total inscrutable character and the writing along side the historical facts is a joy unequaled. Superbly read and worth every penny to listen to.

Suspend any snowflake tendencies...

...& strap yourself in for the rude of your life! An unfortunate event sees Harry off across the high seas in a story that opens up the details and horrors of the trans-Atlantic slave trade in a manner only GMF can. The adventure is detailed in such a manner as to make the listening almost unstoppable; and the narration of Colin Mace is once again remarkably adept and entertaining.

Brilliant experience for my first audio book

Really enjoyed this, it's my first audio book as I read the two prior, great for car, plane or any travel. Narrator does a great job of bringing a great story to life.
I would certainly recommend.

distracting

I usually just listen to these books, but this one, I just listened to rather disruptive of other tasks to do
I found it both entertaining and opened my mind to the key subject discussd in the story..

Best Flashman plot

This book has the most convoluted and unpredictable of all the Flashman stories, making it one of the best.

He keeps going from the frying pan onto the fire, and he only gets off the hook at the very last moment.

Well worth a read if you're into politically incorrect, but historically relevant, entertainment.

Another good addition to the Flashman papers

Again well read by Colin Mace and funny fast paced story. Flashman’s self serving and amoralistic character laid bare and he works as both a slave trader and a Underground Railroad operative while all the while showing his contempt for each

Action, Adventure and a complete blunder

Flash man is everything one shouldn’t be with low morals, totally selfish and cowardly at his core but the stories are brilliantly written and keep you on the edge of your seat. Every twist and turn leads to new deviously yet credible plots. I have loved getting to know this abominable character.

Amazing

Hard listening to sometimes with the racism. But a proper journey of the slave trade, very very well read.

Great Adventure

This Flashman adventure provides a fascinating insight into pre civil war America. The portrait of Abraham Lincoln is irrisistable. Honest Abe is the only person who sees right through Flashman and confirms his suspicions with a couple of simple questions.
