Publisher's Summary

Soon to be an original movie on Disney+. The beloved 2014 Newbery Medal winner by former National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Kate DiCamillo.

Holy unanticipated occurrences!

It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You!, is the just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry - and that Flora will be changed too, as she discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart.

From number one New York Times best-selling author Kate DiCamillo comes a laugh-out-loud story filled with eccentric, endearing characters.

A chore to listen to the story and reader

My girls and I couldn’t get into this book. It was a chore to listen to the story with interest. The reader was a little annoying to listen to at times. I often had to think to myself, “okay what is happening here?” Often I had to rewind to recall what we missed because we lost interest in the story. Maybe we just couldn't get into this genre of fiction.

A solid addition to Ms. DiCamillo's ouvre

Any additional comments?

This allegorical parable masquerading as a pseudo-graphic novel is brilliant. It cleverly combines light, heroism and persistence in a fascinating alchemy made all the more compelling with fantastic illustrations. What can I say - Ms. diCamillo is a sure bet every time!

Another Winner for Kate DiCamillo

Every time we read a Kate DiCamillo book, we swear it’s our favorite one. Then we move on to another … and IT’S the new favorite. Flora and Ulysses is another great book filled with funny, quirky characters and unexpected moments. It also covers some tough topics like divorce and not feeling accepted by a parent. Both my kids (ages 8 & 12) loved Flora’s sense of righteousness and Ulysses super-hero squirrel flying skills — literally laughing out loud in many places.

Not for us, too babyish

My kids and I couldn't stand listening to this one. The writing was ok... I don't think my kids would've minded the story line. But the reader was very grating for us. Way too babyish and the pitch just didn't work. We only got about 45 mins in and called it quits.

Wanted to love it.

Teacher who read this book as part of a curriculum. Hated it. So many great books by this author, but this one is a disaster.

Decent story ruined by narration

The children asked if we could turn this off in the car as it was giving them headaches. We had to agree. A charming tale but the voice is grating
