My brother’s friend is hot. If you’re into flannel-wearing lumbersexual former jocks who eat donuts for dinner and still scribble to-do lists on their palms. I’m not. I’m a serious scientist in my final of grad school. Sure, I have few quirks of my own, and I’m all for having fun, but I don’t have time for Aiden’s brand of crazy.

Milo. Unusual. Quirky. Different. I’ve heard it all. I’ve accepted I’m not for everyone. When I find out I inherited a bookstore and apartment on a small East Coast island, I jump at the chance for a new life. Turns out I’ve also inherited a sexy, tattooed guy who not only rents the space next to my store but my apartment too. Gideon. I wasn’t looking for a roommate, but it’s not like I can stay at Milo’s place while he’s banished to a hotel. According to Milo, we’re bestie goals. And if he doesn’t wear pants at home, who am I to complain?

I’ve had a crush on my brother’s best friend since the moment I laid eyes on him four years ago. Warner Ramsey is 225 pounds of pure hotness, a media darling, and one of the best NFL quarterbacks in the league. Hell, he’s the reason I figured out I’m solidly bi. It was easy to keep my crush under control when I was in college. Now, we play for the same team, and every time he talks smack, I want to shut him up. With my mouth.

When it comes to hockey, I'm all about the game. I've worked for years to be one of the best in the league, and l've done it without splashing my orientation all over the tabloids. My hockey image is one I've carefully cultivated, and after one night with Ezra Palaszczuk, I risk it all. He's cocky, obnoxious, and has an ego bigger than Massachusetts. And okay, maybe he's the sexiest man I've ever known. We'll never get along. Not when we sleep together. Not even when my possessive streak awakens. That doesn't stop us from falling into bed together over and over again.

"Look out for Zach, and don't hit on him." My brother's request sounds easy enough. Keep an eye out for his best friend on campus and keep my hands to myself. Easy. Even if Zach is a quintessential nerd, who I've always thought was cute, I don't have the time to think with my...stick. There's only one stick I should be focused on this year, and that's my hockey stick. My goal once I graduate is to get an NHL contract. The last thing I need is a distraction. On or off the ice. Kind, caring, and protective. Those are the three qualities I’m looking for when it comes to my dream man. In a city as big as Chicago, you wouldn’t think he would be that hard to find, right? Wrong. Sure, my boss found a super-sexy detective and my best friend fell madly in love with the most eligible bachelor around. But the only person I’ve met recently is a broody bad boy who saved me at a sketchy pub. He’s grumpy, rude, and honestly, not that likeable at all. Hardly my “dream” guy. So why can’t I stop thinking about him?

Publisher's Summary
The geek, the jock, and a new set of rules....
Topher - My friend’s brother needs an academic assistant, and I need a job. Problem.... Jocks are my weakness. Seriously. I lose my ability to speak coherently around muscle-bound hotties. Oh yeah, I lose my inhibitions, too - not a good look for a guy with a genius IQ. So what am I going to do about Simon?
Simon - Finishing college isn’t high on my list of priorities, but my future in professional football is looking bleak. I need a plan B or C, and I could use some help navigating life as an undergrad. Topher is perfect. He’s also a little strange...but in a good way. And I like how I feel when I’m around him - as though anything is possible. Maybe if we follow our hearts, we’ll find what we’re looking for. But that means changing the rules....
Following the Rules is a MM, bisexual awakening romance starring a lovable nerd, a cool jock, and some extracurricular fun.

Entertaing, laid back read
If you're looking for a feel-good male/male romance, Following the Rules would be a good place to start. The story is a geek and jock romance, but it doesn't get all angsty and dramatic. There is a bit of angst - we do need that pivotal moment, right? - but for the most part, this one is just an entertaining and engaging listen. Speaking of, this is my first time listening to Alexander Cendese. Well, I've heard him before on some WEB Griffin books my husband listened to, but this is the first time he's narrated something in my wheelhouse. Anyway, I like the upbeat style, and his timing for the wit and humor is really good. I also appreciate that he gave the characters distinct voices and tone, so it was easy to follow who was talking. I also liked that we don't get a lot of angst with Simon realizing he's bi. There is some discussion and thought about it, but I like that he kind of takes things as they come. Topher is a great character, and he's just totally lovable. This may be an opposites-attract romance, but these two fit together like 2 pieces of a puzzle.

Made my breath catch
At the beginning of this book, we are first introduced to Christopher, or Topher, to his friends. He and his fellow geeks are about to be moving in together and are brainstorming ways for them to partner up and earn money for their rent and college loans. After discussing a few options they come up with a venture called the Script Club. Seeing how that is the name of the series I can guess that the following books will feature the rest of the roommates.
One of Topher’s Script Club buddies happens to have a brother in need of tutoring. Topher is especially in need of money since his internship fell through, so he decides to give it a try. It’s not that he can’t tutor, but Simon is a professional athlete and jocks are Topher’s weakness. He gets tongue tied and falls apart when trying to talk to them, not to mention he is insanely attracted to them. Simon is a football player who’s suffered more than one concussion on the field and is currently unemployed. He wants to get back to playing, but until then he has decided to take some college courses and make a Plan B.
Topher’s nervousness definitely makes it difficult for them to gel at first, even though Simon seems to be a really nice guy. Their initial conversations are awkward and a little funny. Things change when Simon figures out that Topher might feel more comfortable playing a role and the two begin texting each other character names and scenarios to act out during their tutoring sessions. For me this story was sweet and funny, with both of the characters being likable. I don’t think the story is really unique, with many other jock/nerd romances out there, but there was something that set this story apart for me. Besides being sweet and funny, it was HOT! The chemistry between Topher and Simon would just explode at times, like when they were just talking and Topher would grab Simon and kiss him passionately. At times, my breath would catch. I could feel the intensity and it added to the story.
I always enjoy stories by Lane Hayes and this one was no exception. I’m a fan of Alexander Cendese’s and I hope he does more in world of mm romance. I would definitely recommend this book and I look forward to reading/listening to the next in the series.

Wonderful story and audio
I thoroughly enjoyed the audio by Mr. Cendese. His timbre is so expressive. The narration had great pacing and a wide range of easily distinguishable voices. I was rapidly pulled into the story and never lost interest. The production was professional and incredibly enjoyable. I absolutely adored how Mr. Cendese interpreted Simon’s voice. I loved the football player and really felt he came to life. The banter between Simon and Topher was so entertaining and the audio was just perfect. I highly recommend this appealing listening experience.
Storyline: Nothing beats a Lane Hayes novel for putting you in a good mood. Her characters are always so much fun to get to know, and I appreciate how realistic and authentic they are. Lane creates men that are people you would want to hang out with. There is a comfort level with her stories, and they always leave me feeling positive. This story is no exception.
The classic geek and jock attraction was beautifully, and realistically, portrayed. Topher is a science nerd, and loves to spew facts. Any facts actually, and he seems unable to control this quirky impulse. Socially, he is awkward but ironically, he can make his needs known about physical attractions and desires. Topher comes without a filter, and this just added to his overall character. Simon is a displaced jock who at the moment is just coasting with his life. An injury has sidelined him, and he is desperately waiting for a football team to pick him up. At the ripe old age of 27, and with numerous injuries, this may not happen. He is encouraged to try some college courses while he waits to see if his career can be salvaged. It doesn’t take long to know he is out of his element and requires help. Requesting a tutor, his brother suggests Topher, who needs a new job.
At first, I couldn’t see them as a couple but with time it was evident the MCs were perfect for each other. They have a strong pulsing connection, and their growing relationship becomes solid. Topher is attracted to athletes, but his past with them has only been filled with heartache. Simon has never felt a strong, lasting pull towards anyone before. It doesn’t appear that either man will be around for the future, unless they are willing to take some big risks. This tale had the right mixture of angst, and strong characters that showcased Lane’s strong writing.
An amazing story of opposites attract that will leave you smiling long after it’s over. Happy listening!

Quirkiness wins the day.
Simon and Topher are a couple that should never work, but they fill the bill for each other. Brain and brawn plus a strong sex drive make for many humorous and quirky situations that keep the story moving and fun to read and delightfully entertaining.

Entertaining but a bit off mark
The voice actor was kinda awful when it came to voicing "Topher". The first chapter the voice actor did ok Topher's voice was like any other guy's voice just like you'd expect. Once he included Simon's voice it was like he forgot how he originally portrayed Topher and made him sound like a stereotypical 1980's "nerd" caricature... I was so disappointed and frustrated that it ruined a lot of the story. I get that you gotta distinguish voices but come on that was awful.
The author's understanding of quirky people is a bit off mark.
If you've never been to college this book will probably give you the wrong idea... there's no "jocks" or other stereotypes when going to college...no one cares... most people.are just trying to pass thier classes. Those "cliques" are left behind in high school.
only entertaining thing was how fast the main characters hooked up....

Good story. Good narration.
A Lane Hayes story with Alexander Cendese narrating?! Yes! Thoroughly enjoyed the story. I am often hesitant to read jock/nerd romances because I am both a jock and a science nerd. I am usually disappointed in the stereotypes. Not with Lane Hayes though. The romance and the characters were well thought out, and I appreciate how masterfully the author managed a very common trope without relying on aggravating stereotypes.
I started listening to the second book right after I finished the first one.
As an added bonus, we get a quick glance at characters from one of Hayes' earlier series. I do enjoy hunting for Easter eggs....

Great Escapism
A delightful low-angst romance with a great balance of heat and character development. Both characters were well crafted and such fabulous opposites that together, they made so much sense and reached adorable levels.
A superb audio narration too.

My first jock and nerd story
I admit I don’t read a lot of what used to be termed “New Adult” romance. Although I loved my university years, I don’t have much interest in repeating them. I’m looking for more mature characters who have some years on them. That being said, I really liked Ms. Hayes’ Starting From series and this is a spin-off, so I was willing to give it a shot. In truth? I’ll listen to just about anything, and Ms. Hayes books are right up there on my list.
Simon’s been cut from the NFL, and is waiting for the call to go back. Three concussions haven’t deterred him. He wants to play in the big leagues. In the meantime, he realizes he has to have a life beyond football. So college, right? Something to do. A way to pass the time. Except academics were never his strong suit. Solution? Hire someone to help him. He didn’t see Topher coming from a mile away, but now that they’re up close? Suddenly Simon is very interested in exploring his hither unknown bisexual side. Suddenly women aren’t doing it for him, and all he wants is his tutor.
I could completely relate to Topher. Somewhat nerdy. Somewhat socially awkward – except with his friends. His weakness is jocks – and he’s been burned before. So when Simon hires him to help him academically, Topher puts up walls. Tall ones. Because Simon is straight, and Topher is so not going down that road again.
Simon’s awakening felt legitimate. I think some people can be straight until they meet the right person and suddenly they’re not as tied to social conventions. Suddenly, for the right person, they’re willing to risk everything.
I also liked the acknowledgement that there needs to be life beyond professional sports. Very few players make big bucks, and if they money isn’t invested wisely, they can be in trouble in their later years. Simon is planning ahead, and that holds him in good stead.
This is an opposites attract romance – what could be more different than the jock and the nerd? It’s the first book in the Script Club series and I’m intrigued to see where this goes next. The narrator for this book is Alexander Cendese. I haven’t heard him often, but I do enjoy his voice, and if he’s narrating the rest of the series, I’m excited for that.
