Publisher's Summary

Robin Hobb returns to her best-loved characters with the second volume in a brand-new series.

Happy endings never last....

Years ago, they freed a dragon from the glaciers on Aslevjal. Then they parted ways, the Fool returning to far-off Clerres while Fitz finally claimed a wife, a family, and a home of his own. Now, betrayed by his own people and broken by torment, the Fool has made his way back to the Six Duchies.

But as Fitz attempts to heal his old friend in Buckkeep Castle, his young daughter, Bee, is abducted from Withywoods by pale and mysterious raiders who leave ruin and confusion in their wake. Fitz must find a way to rescue his beloved Bee.

At the same time it is the Fool's fiercest wish to return to Clerres with the best assassin he has ever known, to gain vengeance and justice. Can Fitz bear to take up the tools of his old trade again, even to avenge his dearest friend and save his child?

Critic Reviews

"Robin's secret is not just in the detail with which she depicts the Six Duchies world she has explored over 20 years, but her emphasis on internal drama...the feelings of anguish, ambiguity, fear and failure are as familiar as those in a novel by Jonathan Franzen." ( Independent on Sunday)
"Glorious and beautiful storytelling from Robin Hobb." ( SciFi Now)
"Hobb seamlessly blends intrigue, action and characters who feel so real that they become more than words on a page.... Every second spent in her world is a privilege and a pleasure." ( SFX)
"Robin Hobb's Fitz and the Fool series continues to delight." ( Starburst Magazine)
"Another crowning career achievement in the lifetime of one of fantasy's modern-day masters." ( Fantasy Book Review)
"Fantasy as it ought to be written." (George R. R. Martin)

Brilliant

Greatly appreciate Robin Hobb sharing her gift yet again in this long awaited novel. Thoroughly enjoyed being immersed again in the adventures of Fitz and the Fool. The narration in this audio addition was perfect.
Can't wait for the sequel.

Badly edited

The book is great however it needs to be re-record or at least edited as the name Vindalier, is extremely badly edited in, through out the whole book and completely destroys all immersion and makes it barely listenable, they would be better off skipping over the name completely than keeping the horrendous editing, for a full priced audio book it's a disgrace.

Again the narration is truly appalling

Lee Maxwell-Simpson's narration is better than book one but is still appaling, and if Avita mispronounces something, get her to rerecord the WHOLE sentence don't just take 'Vindaleer' and from another instance and drop it into a sentence. Some passages are laughably bad, how Audible can charge people for this audio book is beyond me.

Robin Hobb should be distancing herself from these audiobooks as they are a very poor representation of her truly excellent work.

Do yourself a favour and buy the book and read it yourself.

Narration

I think someone got a name wrong on this and tried to fix the mistake by badly re-recording the word and editing it into the final piece. Its terribly done however and makes the book quite hard to listen to.

really annoying edit

Great stories, but the same as 95% of the other reviews, I dread every time vindalier's name pops up, completely different cadence tone etc to the rest of the sentence every time and it SOOOOO ANOYING. unless the voice actor has passed away they should be made to do those sentences again.

Far too much moaning and lamenting

Previous narrator much better. Far too much repetitive moaning and lamenting about FC’s failures shortcomings and this is the same for lots of the characters. Sham because as per the other books the story is basically sound.

vindalier

this is book 15 of 16, if you're here it's because ypu love this series and I do not discourage you from getting the book but the recording is sub par. the performance is excellent and both voice actors seem good and have good cadence but the name "vindalier" is overdubbed in such a way that you're taken out of the story. whomst ever is responsible and thought "that's now finished and ready for public consumption" shame on you.

laboured story and awful editing

Up to this point I had loved the Farseer storyline. It's as if the writer was a copy Robin Hobb failure, who tried and missed. But I can truly say the character 'royal bastard' Fitz has been well and totally bastardised. How can the character change so much from one book to the next. Even though the story has skipped 20 years, all other characters remain consistent, but Fitz is an unrecognisable idiot until the last three hours of the book, and even then, it's not good. The first 10 hours of this book are a waste of time. The story line is so inconsistent with the characters from previous books, and I stopped reading it. So, so disappointing!!! I cannot face another book like this, which the next is 45 hrs, and will return this one, just too many useless details that add NOTHING to the story. The editing is appalling, and the obvious error of the name Vynalier is truly blatant, and in 10 years of listening to audible, I've never heard such an awful edit. What a shame. I still think Robbin Hobb is a great writer in this genre, but certainly has gone off the rails about now with this book.

Good story but let down by production

Story is good as usual but the book is unfortunately let down by this poor audio recoding. Lee Maxwell-Simpson is very one-dimensional and doesn't emote to suit the context or even the explicitly described emotions. The only voice he does well is spoiled English lordling which he applies to almost all characters. Most of his characters are inseparable, for example Chade and Kettricken have the same voice. Avita Jay does much better. Some of her reading is unfortunately let down by bad production, where the reading of the name of one of the characters is badly edited out and replaced. It must have been mispronounced initially and instead of re-reading those sentences they were poorly edited.

Frustrating read

Did not enjoy the narrators at all. Often using poor choice of vocal tone (opinion)

Robin Hobb is my absolute favorite.

And this book is ridiculously good. The narrator however was not great. The narrators should have to read the back catalogue so the understand the characters. I found myself constantly correctly his tone in my head and his voice for the fool was painful. And the rain Wilfred sounded German. But saying that I listening to it all and enjoyed it. I had read it twice and enjoyed listening to it, adds another perspective.

Robin Hobb is stellar once again.

The story is a fantastic continuation of the story of FitzChivalry Farseer. I really enjoyed having a male and female narrator, both of who did a wonderful job.

Much better performance!!!

That was a MUCH better performance from Lee Maxwell-Simpson and Avita Jay! The voice dramatisations for the different characters were rich and distinct. Well done! And of course, well done to Robin Hobb for her truly outstanding books.

Great story but average narration

I love Robin Hobb's novels so much and this one is no exception. I am irritated by the male narrator's portrayal of The Fool though and even the female I find a bit melodramatic at times. Both narrators put emphasis in the wrong places. The overdubbing of Vindalier's name is super annoying and detracts from the story. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, they did do o.k but I just felt an otherwise brilliant story was let down a little.

only one annoying thing in this trilogy

I love all Robin Hobb books.. can't get enough.
i have one downside to all of these audio readings of my favourite books. it absolutely drives me insane that when you are familiar with a narrator's voice, that person changes. it's super frustrating and annoying in a series of books. the voices should be the same!!!
