The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Story
True-crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace. As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls - haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside.

I Wanted to Love It, but was Disappointed
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I was looking forward to the release of this book as a fan of The Voss/Edwards team. I was a little disappointed. The story was a little contrived and a little bit slow. I felt like the authors took a few dating websites, changed the name, and plugged in characters to make a marginally engaging thriller that never really grabbed me. By the end, I was ready to be done. I would recommend Kill Cupid and Venus Trap over this one.
If you’ve listened to books by Mark Edwards and Louise Voss before, how does this one compare?
Not as good by a long shot.
What does Jessica Ball and Ben Elliot bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narration was great and added to the overall feeling.
Did Forward Slash inspire you to do anything?
Inspired me to finish and pick up a better Edwards/Voss book!
Any additional comments?
The moving parts were just too plodding. There wasn't enough innovation here; the authors are talented and could have done better with the components they were working with. The characters were blah. The main characters, sisters Amy and Beth were stereotyped and I couldn't get invested in their plights. Overall, not the authors' best.

Explicit graphic violence. A mess of a book.
I’ve gotten books by these creative authors before and enjoyed them. This one, however, drags on and on. I got to the point where I didn’t care about how it ended and skipped chapters. Warning: Graphic violence parts were too much for me. I fast-forwarded through those. The story was so convoluted, ridiculous and slow. Happy I didn’t waste a credit.

Gruesome villains!
Which character – as performed by Jessica Ball and Ben Elliot – was your favourite?
She voiced all of the characters extremely well. Only lost a star due to incorrect emphasis occasionally.
Any additional comments?
The main villain in this story did some very gruesome things. However, the descriptions of these were not over-egged. Parts of the book are nasty, but not gratuitously so. There was a point when it seemed that all men who weren't in the Police force were dangerous, but it was so well written and had me on the edge of my seat throughout, that this was forgivable.

Good read
This book has all of the suspense that I've come to expect from Edwards and Voss. They excellently weave together their characters individual narratives, and keep you guessing all the way. You initially start feeling sympathy for a character and this gets slowly eroded by the twists and turns in the plot. Edward and Voss do have a tendency for the unrealistic and depending on your tastes that can be a positive or a negative. I enjoyed this book - it's very easy to listen to and to follow. The narrator portrayed the characters well although her accents, at times, were quite laughable.

Lacklustre
Although the premise was interesting and hopeful, the story turned out to be quite unoriginal. It was easy for me to lose interest and by the time the killer was revealed, I didn't really care anymore. The main character isn't likeable; she has this awful judgemental persona, yet is completely naive about her own life, making it quite hard to root for her. What really let the book down was the narration. Both narrators have the most boring voices, almost like they're not really putting the effort into their characters. The female narrator is worse as she had several characters to play, and her voice is almost identical for each person she plays. The story could have been a lot more interesting but it lacked excitement and intrigue for me.
