Tommy Phan is a successful detective novelist living the American dream in Southern California. One evening he comes home to find a small rag doll on his doorstep. It’s a simple doll, covered entirely in white cloth, with crossed black stitches for the eyes and mouth, and another pair forming an X over the heart. Curious, he brings it inside. That night Tommy hears an odd popping sound and looks up to see the stitches breaking over the doll’s heart. And in minutes the fabric of Tommy Phan’s reality will be torn apart. Something terrifying emerges from the pristine white cloth....

Publisher's Summary
In Frankenstein: Lost Souls, Dean Koontz puts a singular twist on this classic tale of ambition and science gone wrong, to forge a new legend uniquely suited to our times. It is a story of revenge, redemption, and the thin line that separates human from inhuman.
The work of creation has begun again. Victor Leben, once Frankenstein, has seen the future — and he’s ready to populate it. Using stem cells, “organic” silicon circuitry, and nanotechnology, he will engender a race of superhumans — the perfect melding of flesh and machine. With a powerful, enigmatic backer and a secret location where the enemies of progress can’t find him, Victor is certain that this time nothing can stop him.
It is up to five people to prove him wrong. In their hands rests nothing less than the survival of humanity itself. They are drawn together in different ways, by omens sinister and wondrous, to the same shattering conclusion: Two years after they saw him die, the man they knew as Victor Helios lives on. As they gather at a small Montana town, old alliances will be renewed and tested, from within and without, for the dangers they face will eclipse any they have yet encountered. Yet in the midst of their peril, love will blossom, and joy, and they will discover sources of strength and perseverance they have not imagined.
They will need them, for a monumental battle is about to commence that will require all their ingenuity and courage, as it defines what we are to be...and if we are to be at all.

I feel a little ripped off
Let me first address why I feel ripped off. After over 8 hours of listening, the end was a huge disappointment because nothing in the story was resolved. It seems to me that the reason for this is to make way for another sequel.
In my view this can be good & not so good.
Good because Christopher Lane is an excellent narrator. I am always amazed when narrators are able to remain consistent as they give voice to characters. The only exception would be Michael and Madison. Since both come from the south, I would expect both to have a distinct southern accent. Neither do.
Good because this book is really funny in parts. As I drove and listened, I laughed out loud. Sometimes Mr Koontz is downright silly, and frankly I enjoy silly when it doesn't become stupid and tedious.
Good because the dialogue is always interesting and it's real. I like that too.
Not so good because I tend to wonder if I will maintain interest long enough to see the saga of Victor Frankenstein (or whatever alias he uses--this one is Immaculate, which IS kind of stupid.)
Not so good because frankly I think this is purposeful to keep me coming back--and so far I'm falling for this age old tactic. I guess I enjoy it enough that, despite the not so goods, I continue to be entertained.
Finally, I would recommend this book if you want an entertaining, funny cliff hanger and you're willing to get sucked in. Mr Lane's narration is really engaging enough when added to Mr Koontz' humor to be worth the cost/credits. I'd do it again, and I'll probably find myself listening to #4--or is it #5. See! You just lose track.

Frankenstein Lost Souls
I have to say although I love the Frankenstein series and the characters, I was totally disapointed in this book it just stopped in the middle I was looking for part 2 and their wasn't one. I can only assume that he will finish this part of the Frankenstein series in the next book. I recommend waiting until the next one comes out before listening to it.

Frankenstein: Lost Souls
I am very disaapointed. I played back the last chapter to make sure I hadn't missed the rest of the book. We waited so long for the 3rd installment of this book, and frankly, I don't think Dean Koontz realized how disturbing that was for the fans of this series. Now with this fourth installment, I feel cheated because what I bought was half a book, not the whole. I guess this is a way of generating more income, but that should not be necessary for this author. I am very disaapointed!

I'm Angry about this one
I've enjoyed this series and Koontz has been one of my favorite authors. But this book, or half book, really pissed me off! It's not like he's a struggling author trying to bring in some money. It really burns me that I'll have to use another credit to read the rest of the book when it's released. With that being said, I think I'm done with Dean Koontz books. This is absolutely absurd!! Oh, the story so far was entertaining and enjoyable to listen to. Christopher Lane does an OUTSTANDING job as narrator! He even made me laugh out loud! If this were a complete book with a decent ending I probably would have given it 5 stars.

Bummer
Koontz is my guilty pleasure. Like Kettle Corn, if it's around, I want all of it. I feel like this book is part epilogue, part prologue, and ends just when things are getting started.
If you are a fan of this series, then nothing I say will dissuade you. If I had it to do over again, I would wait until the next installment is released and then read them both back to back.
Like Kettle Corn, I wish there was more but I'm ashamed for how much I love it.
Thank goodness DK is prolific and knows his audience.
Next book, next month? Fingers (and toes) crossed.

Excellent series - Best narrator for story
Would you consider the audio edition of Frankenstein, Book Four: Lost Souls to be better than the print version?
I don't have time to sit & read so the print version would be useless to me. PLUS there's Christopher Lane reading!!! I love his voice. It has a creepy quality and yet, he has a wonderful voice and does each character extremely well.
What other book might you compare Frankenstein, Book Four: Lost Souls to and why?
The rest of the series. The first book is read by Scott Brick, who always does an excellent job and the story is fascinating but I like Christopher Lane better for this book. It is a kind of creepy story and Lane is perfect. Book 5, the final in the series, was one of the best books I have ever read or listened to. Lane narrates the story of love, good vs evil, courage and one of the best descriptions of true love I've ever heard. I just don't think there could be a better book than the 5th but Koontz really outdoes himself on this series. He just became one of my favorite authors.
Which character – as performed by Christopher Lane – was your favorite?
Deucalion, the original Frankenstein's monster is my favorite. They are all so good and each character has wonderful depth. Theres the kind & mistreated Erica 5, the quirky and extremely weird Jocko, Carson & Michael, the two detectives are very funny & witty - so many and so good.
If you could take any character from Frankenstein, Book Four: Lost Souls out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Deucalion. Because he is so old, spiritual and enigmatic. He's powerful but gentle and due to spending over one hundred years in monasteries he would be fascinating to talk with.
Any additional comments?
I am blown-away by Dean Koontz's writing.
