Publisher's Summary
Longlisted for the Booker Prize 2019
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Frankissstein by Jeanette Winterson.
From 'one of the most gifted writers working today' (New York Times) comes an audacious new novel about the bodies we live in and the bodies we desire.
In Brexit Britain, a young transgender doctor called Ry is falling in love - against their better judgement - with Victor Stein, a celebrated professor leading the public debate around AI.
Meanwhile, Ron Lord, just divorced and living with Mum again, is set to make his fortune launching a new generation of sex dolls for lonely men everywhere.
Across the Atlantic, in Phoenix, Arizona, a cryogenics facility houses dozens of bodies of men and women who are medically and legally dead...but waiting to return to life.
But the scene is set in 1816, when 19-year-old Mary Shelley writes a story about creating a nonbiological life form. ‘Beware, for I am fearless and therefore powerful.'
What will happen when homo sapiens is no longer the smartest being on the planet? Jeanette Winterson shows us how much closer we are to that future than we realise. Funny and furious, bold and clear-sighted, Frankissstein is a love story about life itself.

Yikes
Good: The performances were good (I’m a big fan of Perdita). And the story covered some interesting ideas about the future of artificial intelligence. I thought the retelling of Mary Shelley’s part of the story was well done.
Bad: truly awful and ignorant treatment of a trans character by the author. Ruined the book for me.

I was sad when I it ended, like leaving a friend
This is the second time I've read this book, the first time was in print and it just gets better from both the stories layers and the performance.
I am always amazed at where Jeanette takes us, the images she renders and the ideas that we are left with.

Ron, the sex bot salesman, steals the show!
I enjoyed this book. Im a fan of Shelley's novel and loved listening to the characters behind some of the UK's best literature. It's genuinely funny as well as subversive and clever. Ron the Sex Bot salesman is as hilarious as his ideas are repugnant. And yet he's infinitely likeable. I was delighted every time his lilting Welsh voice came through my speakers.

A tale of 2 monsters?
Entertaining, likeable characters, the older story of Mary Shelley outshone the up to date story. The differences between the two stories were too wide and the new one lost it's way a bit.

Outstanding
An amazing, intelligent, enthralling piece of fiction which was like a love letter to Mary Shelley interwoven between the pages of a very entertaining and interesting piece of fiction. Some of the narration from the actor voicing Ry could use some work. (his accents and the fact that he doesn't know what a cypress tree is) but otherwise brilliant!

One track theme, it wasn't AI
Not for me this book. Was hoping for an interesting jump across history and technologies, and there was a little bit of that. Got tired of listening about a certain type of bot so gave up. Performance was good, put across the characters effectively.

Narration too awkward
Some funny moments but the American and Welsh accents were too annoying to enjoy the story (which was also average). Observations about gender too obvious. There's no real plot and a lot of the 2019 passages feel bloated and like they need an edit.

Awful narration
The female narrator has a soothing, beautiful voice. I could listen to her forever. The first male narrator who is playing Rye Shelley is almost unbearable to listen to. When speaking normally, he’s fine but the American accent is truly awful. It almost makes me want to give up on the book completely.

An easy journey through character and ideas; philosophy and poetry; technology, gender and what it means to be human. Beautifully written.

Just one big slab of recorded text. Ugh
Why is this audiobook not divided into chapters? So unwieldy. This is exactly why I've never bought the audio versions of kindles, which are cheaper. Please don't go down this path, Audible!
