Story
Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Chernow returns with a sweeping and dramatic portrait of one of our most compelling generals and presidents, Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman, or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow shows in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Initially presiding over an oligarchic one-party regime that governed by plurality, Joseph Stalin became the de facto dictator of the Soviet Union. Stalin raised funds for Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik faction via robberies, kidnappings, and protection rackets. To eradicate those regarded as "enemies of the working class", Stalin instituted the "Great Purge" in which more than a million were imprisoned and at least 700,000 were executed from 1934 to 1939.

The definitive biography of Herbert Hoover, one of the most remarkable Americans of the 20th century - a revisionist account that will forever change the way Americans understand the man, his presidency, and his battle against the Great Depression. A poor orphan who built a fortune, a great humanitarian, a president elected in a landslide and then routed in the next election, arguably the father of both New Deal liberalism and modern conservatism - Herbert Hoover is also one of our least understood presidents.

Publisher's Summary
Explore how FDR went from almost dying at birth to leading the United States through the Great Depression and World War II
As the 32nd president of the United States of America, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is a common household name in both his home country and the world. Known as the man who led the United States through the Great Depression and World War II, Roosevelt was a leader and a statesman, a scholar, and a politician.
Franklin D. Roosevelt is the only president to have served for three consecutive terms and voted in for a fourth, a fact that allows him to stand out among the long list of American presidents.
Outside of his role as president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt lived a full life. He was a father and a son, a husband and a career man. He was a bank officer and attended prestigious universities - Harvard University and Columbia University Law School - before practicing law. Additionally, he served as vice president for the Fidelity and Deposit Company. Perhaps most famously, Roosevelt served as governor of New York and president of the United States while he suffered from polio. Instead of allowing the disease to keep him from living a full life, he went above and beyond, training himself to walk without the power of his legs so that his voters would not know that he suffered in any capacity.
What this audiobook aims to do is determine who Franklin D. Roosevelt was as a person outside of the spotlight. This audiobook wants to answer questions about this man. How did he interact with his wife and family? What were his exploits and his vices? His favored hobbies?
Franklin Roosevelt: A Captivating Guide to the Life of FDR is an outline of Franklin D. Roosevelt's life that not only gives a brief overview of his best-known feats but also provides a glimpse into who he was as a person.

The top book, I love Franklin.
Franklin Roosevelt was the first president to serve more than two terms. He could not walk because he caught a disease called polio. His last words were "I have a terrible headache!" Many people missed him very much after his death.

Brief
A nicely put together brief biography of a well known figure in US and world history of the first half of the 20th century. Sometimes the emphasis on certain aspects seems a bit odd to those of us in the medical field, and there is also a page or so about each of his children. Altogether not bad for its length.
Duke Holm is the narrator who can't seem to correctly pronounce terms and locations not of American origin.

Not very lengthy but concise book about our longest serving President. A lot of material here by the author. Well researched and presented in an unbiased manner. A very good read about one of the most important times in our countries history. Roosevelt was not all we believe him to be although he ended the depression and lead us to victory in WW2, he was a very cold and conniving person.

This highly informative
This biography was well-researched and obviously unbiased in its portrayal of FDR's expansion into the classic politician we read in high school history books. The writer's work is a good source for those willing to dive deeply into the archives, but very little of what FDR said and did as a young naval leader sunk into my memory. It presents a limited foreshadowing of some of the actions that FDR took as President, but in many ways, it gives us a less-than-flattering picture of hope.

Very entertaining review of a pretty amazing person at the center of an amazing stretch of US history.
