Story
Midnight. Cait Monaghan and Rebecca McRae are on a desolate road that slices through the New Mexican desert. They've never met before tonight. Both have secrets to protect. Both of their lives are in danger. When a truck pulls up fast behind them, they assume it's punk teenagers or run-of-the-mill road rage, but it soon becomes clear that whoever is driving the truck is hunting them for sport - and they are out to draw blood. As the miles unspool and the dangers mount, the pasts they've worked so hard to keep buried have come back to haunt them. Someone wants one of them dead.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half brother, Ben, didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up - to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? - he’s not there. The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has.

Publisher's Summary
A 2020 Audie finalist - thriller/suspense
A most anticipated book of 2019: Entertainment Weekly | USA Today | Parade | Cosmopolitan | New York Post | PopSugar | Goodreads
“Exhilarating, emotional - a thriller charged with genuine depth and raw power.” (AJ Finn, author of the number-one NYT best-selling The Woman in the Window)
“The corporate malfeasance and shady conspiracies of John Grisham, with the frank feminism of two rounded female protagonists.” (Entertainment Weekly)
They say your daughter is dead.
You know they’re wrong.
When her fiancé’s private plane crashes in the Colorado Rockies, everyone assumes Allison Carpenter is dead.
But Maggie, Allison’s mother back home in Owl Creek, Maine, refuses to believe them. Maggie knows her daughter - or she used to, anyway. For the past two years, the two women have been estranged, and while Maggie doesn’t know anything about Ally’s life now - not even why she was on a private plane to begin with - she still believes in her girl’s strength, and in their love for each other.
As Allison struggles across the treacherous mountain wilderness, Maggie embarks on a desperate search for answers about the world Allison has been involved in. What was she running from? And can Maggie uncover the truth in time to save her?
Told from the perspectives of a mother and daughter separated by distance but united by an unbreakable bond, Freefall is a heart-stopping, propulsive thriller about two tenacious women overcoming unimaginable obstacles to protect themselves and the ones they love.

Editor's Pick
"In her exhilarating debut, Jessica Barry borrows several familiar thriller tropes—a mysterious plane crash, a stalker, a corporate conspiracy, a protagonist on the run—and combines them into a narrative that’s thoroughly entertaining and moving at a breakneck pace without neglecting the emotions and relationships at its heart. The performances lend nuance and personality to each character, infusing this listen with cinematic appeal."

Some good twists but a bit flat overall
Free Fall has some good plot twists, but the story, in its entirety, falls a bit flat. There’s a lot of unnecessary repetition that could have been edited out - frankly probably a few chapter’s worth.
For the audible version: the daughter’s performance is solid, but the mother’s performance is monotone to the point I almost couldn’t force myself to continue. I’m glad I did though, the performance either gets better by the end or maybe you just get used to the mono tone. But the story is worth listening to overall.

Just OK
A little predictable and stereotypical. A lot of gratuitous description that seemed out of context. Found myself rolling my eyes a lot thinking, "Oh brother!" I've never heard someone say the word "whirl" so many times! Lol! They'll probably make TV movie out of it; fits the stereo type. Over, not terrible, but not great.

Best listening in a very long while
After several false starts, mainly Liane Moriarity's latest disappointment, I was really looking for the triple threat novel: great story, believable characters, excellent narrator, plus, plus--Freefall is it. The narrators are the best I have heard in a long time. The story is so well thought out. The mystery is compelling, thoughtfull, riveting. The heroine is flawed and brave , even the sub characters are well drawn. This is the kind of story you keep listening to long after you have pulled into your driveway and the dog looking out of the window is wondering why you are not coming in to the house.

Intriguing and captivating
I absolutely enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I enjoyed the aspects that were given by the book switching time frames. It was a well-written book that managed to entangle what seemed like every character in the book, yet weave its way through to a fantastic ending that thoroughly wrapped up all parties! I truly enjoyed this audible version!
