Story
An intense conversation, a spat with a partner, or even an obnoxious tweet - these situations aren't life-or-death, yet we often react as if they are. That's because our bodies treat most perceived threats the same way. Yet one approach has proven to be incredibly effective in training our nervous system to stop overreacting: polyvagal theory. In Anchored, expert teacher Deb Dana shares a down-to-earth presentation of polyvagal theory, then brings the science to life with practical, everyday ways to transform your relationship with your body.

Psychotherapist David Richo examines the science of triggers and our reactions of fear, anger, and sadness. He helps us understand why our bodies respond before our minds have a chance to make sense of a situation. By looking deeply at the roots of what provokes us - the words, actions, and even sensory elements like smell - we find opportunities to understand the origins of our triggers and train our bodies to remain calm in the face of painful memories.

Most people don't realize how much unresolved emotional pain they carry around. They don't know why they always feel depressed, anxious, victimized, or disappointed. They wonder why they keep making the same self-sabotaging impulsive decisions. These patterns often stem from their lost inner child, which carries a false narrative that has been on repeat since childhood.

Much of what plagues us - people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits - all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.

Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other,” the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.

Publisher's Summary
Therapy-tested real-world techniques for defusing anger and anxiety triggers in any situation, with anyone, and for everyone’s benefit.
At home, at work, or even out shopping, we’ve all experienced a moment when we’ve gone from feeling just fine to feeling out of control. Something inside us shifts. We instantly feel hurt, angry, shut down, or frozen. As best-selling author and therapist Susan Campbell shows, in these moments, we’ve been triggered.
In From Triggered to Tranquil, Dr. Campbell shows how a remark, tone of voice, facial expression, or other interpersonal cue can activate a deep-seated memory of a past wound. By recognizing this dynamic, we can soothe our upset feelings, heal our childhood fears, resolve disagreements, and restore connections.
Dr. Campbell offers a no-blame approach to conflicts and misunderstandings, empowering us to prevent triggers from ruining our relationships. She emphasizes that when we compassionately understand the roots of our trigger reactions, we can also better understand the actions of those around us. As a result, we become stronger and more resilient when facing any upsetting interaction or unwanted surprise. Working with Dr. Campbell’s tools, we expand the size of the world we can comfortably deal with, and learn to take in stride the things we used to avoid.

A essential "HOW TO" for resolving conflict!
The narration and content of this work is excellent! The words of Dr. Susan Campbell as narrated by Christina Moore were engaging and informative from start to finish. I was left with a sense of hopefulness after seeing many on my own relationships fall apart from an inability to "work things out". Susan (as told by Christina) lays out the landscape of how things go sideways in our communications and practical tools for compassionate self inquiry. Most importantly they provide a clear and concise process to repair the upsets. For anyone who has felt the pain of communication breakdowns in love, family, friendships, groups or business relationships this audiobook is a MUST HEAR!
