Story
The Trellixian Empire was constantly expanding, seeking new worlds for its ever-increasing population. If worlds were discovered with existing sentient populations, they were cleansed to make room for colonization. Hundreds of budding civilizations had been eliminated by Trellixian battle fleets. On Earth, years in the past, a scout ship fleeing from the Trellixians crashed. Scientists investigating the wreckage discovered what the Trellixians had done to the world the scout ship escaped from. They also discovered it was only a matter of time before the Trellixians reached Earth.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

To make matters worse, there’s a murderer running loose on board the ship, critically low fuel levels, and the Grish are back, in fast pursuit and ready to finish what they’d started. Only by sheer luck - and a good measure of cagey smarts - will Quintos be able to rise to the challenge.

The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements: You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world...or you can join the service. With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth.

Publisher's Summary
Fleet Admiral Streth has left Rear Admiral Jeremy Strong the difficult task of holding the system of Careth until he can return with a relief fleet. Jeremy is facing impossible odds as the Hocklyns and AIs gather a massive force to crush his fleet and the defenses he has put in place around the bear's home planet. Cut off from the Federation, Jeremy and his people have no idea whether the Federation still exists or if the Hocklyns and the AIs have destroyed it.
In the Federation, Admiral Streth is being forced to play a game of politics to get a relief fleet approved. His biggest fear is that he won't arrive back at Careth in time to save Admiral Strong. He knows that time is running out and he might be forced to take some desperate measures.

Upgrades for everyone!
The Albanians, or Alton as they were known centuries ago, had jumped in to save the Federation’s bacon in the battle against the alien AI and the Hocklyn. The long lost history was brought to light by the Alton Ambassador on the Federation home planet and the Albanian Fleet Commander after the battle. The Alton was the people who originally created the AI to help with labor and manufacturing duties. As the people became more complacent the AI became smarter. As time went on it became obvious that the people had made serious mistakes. By the time the Alton tried to stop the AI it was too late and the AI turned against them. What Alton managed to escape remained hidden in underground cities. Contrary to prior behavior the Albanians err…Alton now shared their advanced science with the Federation so that they could continue the war against the AI and Hocklyn. We return to system Careth, the bears, and Rear Admiral Strong. Since being left to help protect the bears Strong was cut off from the Federation and was unaware of any happenings in the past six months. His mission was to protect the Carethians until Admiral Streth returned with a relief fleet. The Hocklyns were not sitting idle though. They had prepared a sizable fleet and were getting ready to attack the Careth space station. The upgrades provided by the Alton were a huge boon to the Federation. The new fusion reactor not only improved the ships jump capability, shields, and beam weapons, but virtually anywhere power was used. The anti-matter warheads increased the missile damage exponentially. For the first time in a long time the alien AI were worried. They knew who the Alton were and their capabilities. The alien AI immediately began to upgrade their shields and weapons. They also informed the Hocklyn staff about the Alton and upgraded their ships as well. The Alton also came up with a few more defensive surprises for the Federation; these additions were well received and appreciated. It was finally time to put pressure on the Hocklyn and take the battle to them!

Good story but...!!!
Let's see, I've liked to story lines/plots for these books but the best I can describe the writing is that the author needs to take some time & effort to learn his craft. Space battles are fought in 3D, at best these are a little 2d but clearly the author seems to only grasp a single dimension and the tactics are pitiful. Also develop character and use imagination in description, "heavy or deep sighs???!!!!" I never want to hear the terms again, also when describing DO IT. Don't constantly use wiggle words like numerous, miriad etc. be specific the an occasional nonspecific means something special. And on and on. I'm going to get book 5 but only because none of my favorite authors who can actually write have published lately!

The love hate relationship continues
Unlike some books I've read the writing doesn't get any better. The performance continues at the same level as well. The only thing that saves this book is the story. The repetitive sentences are very irritating as always. Too bad the book couldn't be rewritten and performed by someone else.

Very Good series
Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed the series to date and would strongly recommend it. The characters are well developed and well played. The only thing annoying is that the writer spends too much time explaining how a main character feels about superficial characters. We are informed about how the admiral feels about another officers technical capabilities and what they are feeling. A lot of this is simply common sense that the communications officer is good at her job and is concerned about the death of other shipmates. It goes without saying. Anyway very good story and easy to follow. Looking forward to final book... end game and then lost fleet.
