Another great book by Patrick Underwood. You will not be disappointed. Also the dual narration really brings the story to life.

Now this is how you kick off a new series. Freaking awesome! This was the first book I had read but this author bit is this is any indication of quality I’m a fan for ever. Awesome work!

Story continues to provide content with the dual narrators. Listeners that enjoyed book 1 will find this one enjoyable as well.

Well worth your time and treasure

Right up front I'll say that I recommend this series to anybody reading this review. Next a little context for my review which is that I try to split up my review into categories. The author in the story that he's telling, the narration team and their performance, and lastly my personal preferences. I try and take it easy on the first and last book of any series as not every story makes it to “The End” and the first of anything tend to be shaky endeavors. When it comes to a sequel my expectations are that it should be everything that made the first book good enough for me to continue reading and then some. This, the second book, met those expectations. I did not have to take it easy on the first book as the writing was solid. That is no doubt due to the authors preparations which included a peer review from a fellow author by the name of Stoham Baginbott. The author even suggests checking out his work as well. This, now the second book, is every bit as good and then some. Our hero is still struggling with fighting fire with fire while trying to make it his own, sort of speak. He is vigilant to not allow the power to corrupt him. An additional lady is added towards the end of the book for which I doubt anybody who's reading it would be surprised. And there's something of a game plan as to how they're going to fight back. You learn more about the aliens who are controlling this simulation. Now this is a dual narration book assuming that you haven't listen to the first one. The narrators work for a company called Actors Everywhere and I have had the opportunity to listen to a substantial amount of audio books performed by their employees. This team appears to me to be among their newer teams. Sarah Goldstein did a fantastic job on the first book and did not disappoint here either. Marcus Jahn on the other hand had some rough spots. I recall at the time of the last review that I had mentioned that his character performances were hit or miss and that I could not tell whether or not it was him attempting to give himself room to grow the characters in the future or if it was just a new narrator suffering from inexperience. Regardless of what it may have been, the performance has been refined here in the second book. My major concern was for the main character and that has been improved by leaps and bounds. If there was one rough spot that still needs a little sanding, I would say that it is the narrator’s choice of voice for the character called the controller. Fortunately, that character is not prominent in the second book and was easy to get the information from the scenes while overlooking the roughness. Finally for my personal preference I am usually not a fan of books where the story is taking place in the digital space. To me they tend to feel as though nothing really matters. This series however I have enjoyed greatly, and it feels like the stakes are real. There's a weight to the story. I'm extremely interested in what happens next. The next book titled Fortress is already up for pre-order on Amazon with a release date set for September 15th, 2022. One last thing, to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us the audible listeners I just want to say thank you very much, I have enjoyed my time, and well done all around.

An improvement over the first book

The 1st book had a solid story, However, my biggest gripe about it was Marcus's performance. He had a habit of being quite a bit overly dramatic where it was unnecessary. I'm happy to say that his and Sarah's performance in the sequel has greatly improved, and the story had great pacing. I would highly recommend this book.

Awesome book 2

This is a strong book 2, Derk and his lovers start to form a strong group. He begins to understand his power as the book goes setting up what should be an amazing book 3. The battles are well thought out and easy to follow while listening. The narrators do a great job with a solid story.

Substantially better than the first

I like the pacing of this story much more, the male narrator doesn't sound as over the top and zaney as before which is good. Looking forward to book 3

Being the second book, I really enjoyed this book. It continues to build the reality of this world and teases you to follow closely or you may miss something. The narrators did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life. Now the wait for book 3.
