Publisher's Summary

The full, frank story of a remarkable life’s journey—to the pinnacle of success as a basketball player, icon, and entrepreneur, to the depths of personal trauma and back, to a place of flourishing and peace—made possible above all by a family’s love

Grant Hill always had game. His choice of college was a subject of national interest, and his arrival at Duke University cemented the program’s arrival at the top. In his freshman year, he led the team to its first NCAA championship and would eventually make three championship appearances in four years. His Duke career produced some of the most iconic moments in college basketball history, and Coach K proved to be a lifelong mentor. Later, as one of the NBA’s best players and a new face of the Detroit Pistons franchise, Hill was the first person with the potential to give Michael Jordan a run for his money, not just as a player but as a brand. His $45 million rookie contract was almost the least of it. He turned down Nike for Fila, and soon Method Man and Tupac Shakur were wearing his shoes.

Hill writes candidly about all of it, including the transactional impermanence of life in the league and the isolation caused by his growing fame. His parents and friends helped ground him, and eventually he met a gifted musician named Tamia. The love he found with her and the arrival of their two beautiful daughters would be his rock as a brutal and mysterious injury sidelined him, coinciding with his wife’s own serious health struggles.

With openness and insight, Hill relates his entire path, including post-career highlights like his Hall of Fame induction, co-ownership of the Atlanta Hawks, the directorship of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team, and even a yearly gig calling the Final Four. Hill’s father, Calvin, used to tell him that there were always a lot of reasons but never any excuses, and Game is a distillation of a lifetime’s effort to understand the reasons - the good and the bad. At his hardest moments, Hill sought out wisdom from others, stories of inspiration and overcoming obstacles. Now, with Game, he has returned the favor.

“[A] stellar account of [Hill’s] remarkable career. . . . Hoops fans shouldn’t pass this up.” —Publishers Weekly

“A fast-paced and reflective account of an extraordinary career in basketball. . . . [with] scores of memorable, sometimes iconic moments. . . . Hill writes affectingly of all the physical injuries he suffered while playing for four NBA teams, establishing a record of excellence in each. . . . An illuminating exploration of a demanding game by one of its greatest players.” Kirkus

Ok

I love Grant Hill, but the beginning of this book fell a little flat. I feel like too much time was spent naming players and games at Duke. I know that is when he was at his pentacle, but it went on for 13 of the 21 Chapters of the book. I wish he had spent more time talking about his relationship with Tamia, the injury and recovery. I do love that he shed light on how players were misdiagnosed and didn't receive quality care and rehab in the past. Overall it was a decent book. I definitely enjoy the latter half of the book than the first. I hope Tamia decides to write a book about her life too.

Heavy on the basketball

Overall not a bad read, however I would have preferred if it were a lot less basketball heavy. I know that is a large part of his life, but it took up the great majority of the chapters…play by play of basketball games. He did share a bit more in the latter chapters. I pushed through, but I honestly could’ve stopped listening at the halfway point.

Better Than Expected w/ High Expectations

I was pleased he clarified many of his points of view, frustrations, and obstacles over his careeer. Apreciated how he took accountability for his role his maturation process as a an All Star NBA player, businessman, and person. Grant’s story told in his voice was pretty captivating, especially for his mild manner.

Great Insight In 90s And 2000s Basketball

A behind the scenes look at a high school all American, Duke legend, NBA lottery pick and eventual all star all while getting the real of what it’s like being in the spotlight and trying to remain humble.

I was born in 1984. Grant Hill was a superstar we all rooted for. This book gave me more insight and appreciation for his journey.

For anyone who has ever had to overcome an issue with their body, he provides great detail with his injury, misdiagnosis’ from NBA doctors and the mental aspect of rehabilitating from an injury.

Very interesting read. I recommend it.

Greatness is Never muffled for to long

It’s hard being a Grant Hill fan when ur a UNC TarHeel lifer…. But Grant made it easy. Not only the talent we all came to love in 1990 vs UNLV, But the stand up guy he looked to be from afar as well as in this audio. I great read/listen to someone falling and getting back up.

Well worth listening to!

I must admit that I met Grant Hill in an elevator at my educational institution in Mesa Arizona. And I must admit it was impressive. The second time I met him was at a restaurant in Scottsdale where he was dining with his daughters! He stood up and apologized about the loudness of his daughters! Not! Nevertheless we shook hands as I told him I worked for one of the Phoenix Sun’s physicians- he then stopped and told me how much he appreciated the medical team! This book is genuine—from the heart, Not so much about basketball- but more about life as a black athlete and as as husband & father! And about the importance of advocacy in politics! Thanks Grant! You made a difference!

Amazing Story

Grant Hill had already been my favorite basketball player before reading this book, but now he is even more my favorite. I admire him for the adversities he overcame, but never knew the extent of them until I read this book. I couldn’t put it down! Very highly recommend!

Loved the journey.

As Afro American male in his 70’s who has watched but never played on any serious level, I was always curious about the true lives of some of the athletes I have watched over the year.
This autobiography more than satisfying in not only his medical struggles, but shedding light on college and pro basketball figures too.
Thank you to all who had a a hand in producing this audio book.
