Publisher's Summary

As Adolph Hitler rose to power in 1930s Germany, a growing wave of fascism began to take root on American soil. Nazi activists started to gather in major American cities, and by 1933, there were more than one hundred anti-Semitic groups operating openly in the United States. Few Americans dared to speak out or fight back—until an organized resistance of notorious mobsters waged their own personal war against the Nazis in their midst. Gangland-style . . .

In this thrilling blow-by-blow account, acclaimed crime writer Michael Benson uncovers the shocking truth about the insidious rise of Nazism in America—and the Jewish mobsters who stomped it out.

Packed with surprising, little-known facts, graphic details, and unforgettable personalities, Gangsters vs. Nazis chronicles the mob's most ruthless tactics in taking down fascism-inspiring ordinary Americans to join them in their fight. The book culminates in one of the most infamous events of the pre-war era-the 1939 Nazi rally in Madison Square Garden—in which law-abiding citizens stood alongside hardened criminals to fight for the soul of a nation. This is the story of the mob that's rarely told—and one of the most fascinating chapters in American history. And American organized crime.

“Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose”– the more things change, the more they stay the same

In this day of Red vs Blue, it’s somehow comforting to look back to the Great Depression, to a time when two groups of Americans were as passionate as divided Americans are today.

We survived it then.

We’ll survive it now.

what an impelling story@

yes, the Jewish gangsters were folks you didn't want to associate with. but the way they banded together to fight Nazi sympathizers is both heroic and hopeful. exciting to hear the lingo of the times and the genesis of those words.

History Repeats

Interesting story that I never knew. Story line had high points to think about and caution for all to consider.

Doubtful purpose

I find it disturbing to contemplate that a « Dirty Bastard » version composed of Jewish thugs attacked Nazi’s with the blessing of Jewish notables and religious leaders. While it is known that Lucky Luciano did commit the Mafia to assit the U.S. , U.K. and Canada to invade Italy via Sicily, Luciano was misled by being deported back to his country of origine.
Nearing 80 years after WWII, most of the survivors of the Holocaust have passed away. Do they need such a sordid story that, incidentally, fails to relate sources. The initiated will most likely take the story at face value. However, there runs a risk that it also provoke anti-semitism.
I would have appreciated that the author include sources of reference along with an index. The audio version is not practical and I suggest a printed edition. This allows taking notes and research the articles concerning attacks made on Nazi’s. - Giovanni Iuliani

Never On Topic

The book is a fraud. This book is stories from the 30s and 40s but that is as close as it gets to the topic given in the title. Lots of stories about boxing and running numbers.
