Story
After seven years of bitter war, the end has come at last for the conflict known infamously as the Horus Heresy. Terra now lies within the Warmaster’s sights, the Throneworld and the seat of his father’s rule. Horus’ desire is nothing less than the death of the Emperor of Mankind and the utter subjugation of the Imperium. He has become the ascendant vessel of Chaos and amassed a terrible army with which to enact his will and vengeance. But the way to the Throne will be hard as the primarch Rogal Dorn, the Praetorian and protector of Terra, marshals the defences.

Of all the Emperor’s sons who fell to Chaos, it is perhaps Magnus the Red whose tale is the most tragic. Sanctioned because of his desire for knowledge, chastised, judged, and shattered to his very elements – there is much for the Crimson King to feel vengeful for. Yet revenge is not the only thing that draws him to Terra alongside the Warmaster’s besieging armies. He seeks something, a fragment, the missing piece of himself that lies within the most impregnable place on the planet – the inner sanctum of the Imperial Palace.

Publisher's Summary
From out of the shadows of the Silent War, a hero emerges. Clad all in grey, an errant warrior of the Legiones Astartes kneels before the Regent of Terra, and accepts a solemn new duty - Battle-Captain Garro, once commander of the Eisenstein, now Agentia Primus of Malcador the Sigillite.
From the desolation of Isstvan to the halls of the Imperial Palace itself, he stands as a paragon of loyalty and protector of the innocent, ever ready to strike back at the traitorous allies of the Warmaster. But Garro is walking a path of his own, one that may lead him to question his own place in the Imperium...and what if he, too, should falter?
This audiobook contains James Swallow's complete saga of Nathaniel Garro in the Horus Heresy - the audio drama series is embellished and expanded in prose, with additional scenes to represent the author's original vision. This all serves as prelude to the events of the novella Vow of Faith, bringing Garro closer to his inescapable destiny as the first true martyr of the Lectitio Divinitatus.

Malcador the completely different
The book is decent, but the thing that epidemice My dislike for this book is how much malcador act differently then in every book that comes before it... He has always been depicted as jovial and wise, sure he was ruthless enough to found the assassinorium, but he never showed rage or callusnes, and he always found a use for those Who remained loyal to the throne... Yet in this he kills loyal servent, nd plans the murder of even more loyal souls, and when garro shows the tenacity to unravel one of malcadors secrets which looked like a traitor plot, malcador punishes him instead of seeing it as the skill and loyalt to the throne that it was.... So yeah characers in this book grates against how they have been shown in the past...

Enjoyable but often predictable
This next instalment advances the plot of the Heresy series in an enjoyable though often too predictable way.
At times the book shines. In depth characters and their involvement in their part of the saga often had me really enjoying it. Being able to predict quite easily what might happen next detracts from the enjoyment though. James is a great write but this didn't pull me in the same as his other novels in the series.
Narration was hit and miss. Enjoyable voices for the characters though general narration was quite monotone and emotionless.
Still a worthy listen. Still recommended.

Meanders, as does the hero
Garo is one of the more interesting characters of the Heresy series. I was hoping this book would give the reader more insights and a nuanced perspectives to his character. It only partially succeeded. Garo wanders through the book, literally and metaphorically, yet reads as if single minded even in his supposed internal confusion and turmoil. Perhaps it was intented for him to remain enigmatic? I was left wanting a little more.
