Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
The first book in a pulse-pounding new series that’s set in the world of the #1 New York Times bestselling I Am Number Four series. The war may be over—but for the next generation, the battle has just begun!
It has been over a year since the invasion of Earth was thwarted in Pittacus Lore’s United as One. But in order to win, our alien allies known as the Garde unleashed their Loric energy that spread throughout the globe. Now human teenagers have begun to develop incredible powers of their own, known as Legacies.
To help these incredible and potentially dangerous individuals—and put the world at ease—the Garde have created an academy where they can train this new generation to control their powers and hopefully one day help mankind. But not everyone thinks that’s the best use of their talents. And the teens may need to use their Legacies sooner than they ever imagined. Perfect for fans of Marvel’s X-Men and Rick Yancey’s The 5th Wave, this epic new series follows a diverse cast of teens as they struggle to hone their abilities and decide what, if anything, they should do with them. As a spin-off of the bestselling I Am Number Four series, those familiar with the original books and newcomers alike will devour this fast-paced, action-packed sci-fi adventure.

When I read the summary of this book I wasn't sure it would be worth getting in to; however, I am so glad I gave it a shot. The characters are easy to follow and interesting. Don't worry, not all the characters are new, there are some old friends in here too.

So So good.....The Writing man! The writting!
Where does Generation One rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's up there with say Rise of nine and Fate of ten. It's very different, hard to compare really.
What other book might you compare Generation One to and why?
Generation One vs Power of Six
Which scene was your favorite?
That would be a spoiler alert.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both in parts.
Any additional comments?
Just an incredibly written book and start to the new book series.....I really loved it.
The Six......Ran, Nigel, Caleb, Isabella, Taylor, and Cupano.......The story telling....protaganist vs Antagonist. The revelations: How would you respond if a kid of yours got Legacies? What would you do? How would you feel? Very real world feel to this. Really sucked you into their lives, there backstories. Highly recommend if your a fan of the series.

Like TV Spin off, Not as good as Movie/Original
This was the first in the new series following on from ‘I am Number Four’ series in which the Loric battled and defeated Setrakus Ra.
With 7 main stories, 15 short stories, and 6 online stories, the original series was an epic showdown between the Garde, led by John Smith, and the Mogs, led by Ra.
Although there were some up and down points, it was an outstanding series.
Generation One had a lot to live up to, and when it was announced, there was a lot of excitement.
However, I’m not sure it entirely lived up all the expectations.
It felt like the original series had been the big blockbuster movie, and then Generation One had been the spin off TV series.
There was a bunch of new kids, some of the lesser known ‘Human Garde’ from the first series, and a couple of cameo appearances by the stars of the original series.
It took a long time to get going, with the back stories of the new selected main characters, and for some of them it felt like a re-hashing of the discovering of their powers as had happened in the ‘Lost Files’ books from the original series.
Although there were aspects of the storyline that had issues, some of it was well done. It is a year after the battle in New York, the world is still recovering.
The UN has taken control of things, and is now setting up a Human Garde school to train all those humans that have gained abilities.
All humans with abilities are ‘required’ to register and attend, or they will be detained indefinitely. There was a real X-Men feel to this, the start of one of the movies in which the US Senate is trying to pass laws about Mutants, but here it has just been done – well in some countries. Some like Russia and China, and other non-Western countries are just doing what they want. So of course this will lead to some interesting plotlines down the track – the Light Academy vs the Dark Academy.
The main characters are made up of some from the original series, and a couple of new ones Isabela, the shapeshifter whose abilities are incredibly convenient given her past, Taylor, who has the healing ability (and apparently an uncanny resemblance to Sarah Hart, and Kopano who can make his skin impervious to damage are the new ones, the older ones are Nigel the English punk wannabe, he has the sonic abilities, Ran with her explosive kinetic abilities, and Caleb with his duplication abilities.
The characters had some good aspects, Nigel is amusing as the rebellious punk, and Ran is a definite favourite as the girl who wants to be a pacifist, right up until you hurt her friends, and the arguments between the multiple personalities of the duplicating Caleb were not just amusing, but gave an interesting perspective on multiple personality disorder as well. Isabela was unfortunately just too stereotypical to be likeable, Kopano was a bit boring and Taylor starts to grow on you.
Nine makes a couple of appearances as the new Professor and teacher of the students. Malcolm Goode is also back as a Teacher and the creator of the facility, and John Smith makes a very small cameo. Like I said before, obviously Nine’s acting career isn’t doing so well in this spin-off TV series, and they could only afford John as a cameo for the first episode.
I realise the book is about ‘Generation One’, but given that it is only a year after the events of New York, I had expected to read a bit more about the Originals, even to know if they were still alive?
Overall, this had potential, but it was slow going and lacked the thrill and intensity of the first series. However, it is also the first book, so hopefully, this was just setting the scene and the next one will be better.
If you are a fan of the first series, then you will probably want to read it, and if you haven’t read the first series, well, it can stand on its own, but you will get so much more out of it if you have read the first series – even if it is just the main 7 books.
Narration was excellent, Ochlan does an excellent range of voices, conveying the characters very well.

I am having a real hard time getting through this and even though I have all the books I may not listen to the rest I just dont find the story interesting yet and I only have about 2 hrs left of the book. I also dont like that the voices of john and 9 are different. I would have preferred some continuity given that they only speak for about 10 min during the book combined. Overall I find this continuation to be disappointing.

Audible reader is dry
It was all I could do to finish this book. I could not wait for it to be over! Listening to it was actually painful. At one point I ended up going a few weeks without listening at all just because I couldn’t stand the monotone voice the reader had. I will say he does have different voices for the different characters, but no inflection in his voice. The book itself has a good story and it is a good read just for that. Maybe I’ll go back on my Kindle and try it there. I would definitely recommend it as a read. I loved the previous series set so wanted to continue on, but if the next book has the same reader, I’m out.
