Publisher's Summary

"I have read no book that more carefully, thoroughly, and tenderly displays Christ's heart." (Paul David Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries; author, New Morning Mercies and My Heart Cries Out)

Christians know what Jesus Christ has done — but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is "gentle and lowly in heart." This audiobook reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.

Disappointment.

I wanted to like this book. Its opening paragraph, about how this book is for all suffering, frustrated Christians was a strong start. However, the book ends up being not much more than a long-winded spiel on how horribly hellishly sinful we humans all are, but thankfully Jesus is emotionally moved to pity for us. To an extent, sure, Christianity holds that this premise is true, and I'm not necessarily negating all that. But this book feels plain wrong, almost like an emotional bait-and-switch, for suffering believers looking for some reassurance of God's love. Instead of conveying God's endless empathy and tenderness for us, the tone of ninety percent of it just makes you feel crappier. DON'T bother with this book especially if you have a history of surviving religious abuse, being constantly told how bad you are just because of your humanity.

Let Yourself Be Loved

A beautiful work that untangles every lie, doubt, or self reasoning that we won’t be loved and accepted fully by God. To know Him is to love Him and have peace. Thank you!

Christ's heart for YOU revealed

In this life we see time and time again where patience runs out, where parents say "I picture God looking at me and saying, "Again? Really? Didn't you learn from the last 300 times that you did this?!'" We see where others have fallen short and where we have fallen short with our love of others, of God, and of ourselves. We want to know God loves us, and to some degree we know He does and believe that He does, but to what extent? What if He really knew just how fallen our hearts are... what if we just try to perform better, serve more in the church and community, maybe He'll love, or at least tolerate, us more.

Christ's heart for you is not dependent on you. And I know you know that, but do you really believe it in your heart? Do you truly believe and have your identity secure in that you are seen by Him as His perfect bride, beautiful, radiant and holy? Do you see HIM accurately? He is the most beautiful, gentle, kind, and loving person there is. To see His heart is to love Him.

This book will take you deeper into your eternal romance with Christ as you see His heart. When you hear and think about what He Himself revealed about Himself and His heart in scripture, the eyes of your heart and mind will widen with awe as you take in His beauty. Let His heart change you. Let His heart change your relationship with Him. Let His heart change your life. Let His heart win your's more deeply than ever before.

Dane Ortlund, thank you. Thank you for answering the calling to pen this book.

This is not a book about humility

I went into this thinking it would be a book about how to follow Jesus into the humbleness of his being “gentle and lowly“. I think that’s roughly 2 chapters of this book. The rest is an attempt at establishing Jesus as an example of not “loving and just“, but as “just loving“. I’m not saying the author doesn’t mention eternal punishment, or the wrath of God, he just continually undermines it.
I didn’t keep count, but it sure felt like the author quoted outside the Bible as much or more as he quoted the Bible. He also continues to base suppositions on the extra biblical quotes. I didn’t find much of this book helpful at all.
Also, what is “gentle and lowly“ is the narration of this audiobook. It sounds as though the author is reading it in a closet trying not to wake anyone else in the house. To say it’s low energy is an understatement. Very hard to stay awake and focus listening to this narration.

Great Book

Enjoyed so much. How much better I know the heart of God. Since my sweet wife and soul mate went to be with Jesus 45 days ago, this really helps knowing God is right here with me.

For those who have a relationship with Jesus

if you are a follower of Jesus this book is for you. it is meant to be read in the context of an experiential relationship, not an academic exercise of the intellect.

Loved ny many but not by me.

Not for me. I struggled with this book. I felt that it took liberties in claiming to enter the mind of Jesus. It seemed "sloppy" in the sense of an old fashioned love song.
