Germany is one of the richest and most influential countries in the world, which is amazing when you consider that the nation is only about the size of the US states of Oregon and Washington combined. It’s even more astounding when you consider that at the end of World War II, every major German city (and many minor ones) had been flattened by the Allied bombing campaign. Still more amazing is that the country has gone from international pariah and home of the Holocaust to one of the most well-regarded and humanitarian nations on Earth.

The Habsburg family ruled central Europe since the early medieval times to World War I, but they still exist as one of the most prestigious Austrian families. To keep themselves in such high positions, the Habsburgs had to develop unique strategies to fight their political enemies. They wanted to rule the world and saw themselves as the only dynasty worthy of such divine right. To keep the family pure, they often married within their family, which resulted in a very weak genetic pool and many mental and physical problems.

Have you ever wondered how a man like Adolf Hitler could have come into power? How he legally became a dictator by using a democratic process? Or what events led up to his reign of terror? The answers lie in the Weimar Republic. Amid the devastation of World War I, Germany’s monarchy provided no answers. A democratic government seemed the only way to appease Allied nations and solve the many disasters that were already at the country’s doorstep.

Story
Did you know that the barbarian tribe known as the Franks were the founders of present-day France? After assimilating with the Romans in the imperial province of Gaul, the Franks established a unified dominion under King Clovis in the late fifth and early sixth centuries. Under Clovis’ successors, the Frankish kingdom fractured. Warring factions of Franks, under the leadership of the royal descendants of Clovis, imprisoned or more often killed each other. They forced the luckiest of their rivals into monasteries and removed potential royal wives by exiling them to convents.

The Pequot War (1636-1638) was a short-lived but extremely violent and bloody episode in United States history. This event represents one of the turning points in the entire history of North America, as the war changed the balance of power. The Dutch colonial authorities lost their status of being the dominant economic and political force, while the English took over this epithet. The end of the war also represented the first stage in England’s intensive expansion in that part of the world.

Publisher's Summary
If you want to discover the captivating history of Germania, then pay attention....
Germany is a relatively young nation-state. United in 1871, it's even younger than the United States. However, the territories inhabited by the Germanic people have a rich history that reaches far back in prehistory and antiquity. Located in the heart of Europe, Germany witnessed centuries of conflicts, immigration, and negotiations. Consequently, its shape, size, and ethnicity changed throughout history. The territories which constitute Germany today were often war zones, and at times they would join forces against a common enemy or break apart due to internal conflicts. Because of these conflicts, Germany’s boundaries, as well as what it means to be German, fluctuated throughout history and, in some way, are still evolving. The region's long and troubled history influences its present, its politics, and its nationality.
In Germania: A Captivating Guide to the History of a Region in Europe Where Germanic Tribes Dominated and How It Transformed into Germany, you will discover topics such as
- The Early History of Germania
- The Barbarian leaders
- The Merovingians and the Carolingians
- The Holy Roman Empire
- The Reformation
- The Thirty Years’ War
- The Age of Enlightenment
- Napoleon and the Revolution in Germany
- The Many Wars and the Unification
- World War I
- World War II
- Modern Germany
- And much, much more!

Not as much about the tribes as I would have liked

Germania from prehistory to present made memorable
I've always been interested in Germany and the German language and knew major periods (Roman times, the world wars, etc.) but less so with prehistory and the many tribes and other peoples of the area. In this audio book, the entire span from earliest known tribes to the very present, the through line of the Germanic tribes to modern German was detangled and made memorable in a very informative way.
The organization and length of each chapter worked well and allowed adequate detail level for each of the time periods covered. This made the content easily digestible and was well balanced, offering interesting anecdotes while providing overall context in a well-structured narrative arc.
The listed running length of the book is over six hours but don't let that dissuade you. The performance is well done and even at the more rapid pace I use (1.7x), Jason Zenobia's voice is clear and engaging. My only (minor) quibble is some less than exact pronunciation of some German names and words. Even so, I very much enjoyed listening to this wonderful history.
Overall, I really enjoyed this audio book and highly recommend it.

Really interesting weird narrating
I really enjoyed listening to this, and enjoyed the detail and storytelling. I also kind of liked the narrator who has a nice vice, but it does sound like he's an AI. The intonation is a bit odd and robotic. Didn't get in the way and was a lovely listen.
