Publisher's Summary

“A thoroughly satisfying love story with a big, beating heart.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This book is emotional, steamy and sweet - a triple threat! De Cadenet tackles mental health, gender stereotypes, and interracial romance with care and creativity. I loved it!” (Chantel Guertin, author of Instamom)

Khalil Sarda went through a rough patch last year, but now he’s nearly back to his old self. All he has to do is keep his “stuff” in the past. Real men don’t have depression and go to therapy - or, at least they don’t admit it. He’s ready to focus on his growing chain of barbershops, take care of his beloved Detroit community, and get back to being the ladies’ man his family and friends tease him for being. It’ll be easy...until Vanessa throws him completely off his game.

Vanessa Noble is too busy building a multimillion-dollar tech career as a Black woman before age 30 to be distracted by a relationship. Not to mention, she’s been burned before, still dealing with the lingering hurt of a past breakup. Besides, as her friends often remind her, she’ll never find a man who checks all the boxes on her famous List. Yet when she desperately needs a shape-up and happens upon one of Khalil’s barbershops, the Fade, he makes her reconsider everything. Khalil is charming, intelligent, sexy, and definitely seems like he’d treat a woman right...but he’s not Black.

Vanessa may be willing to take a chance on Khalil, but a part of him is frustratingly closed off, just out of her reach. Will old patterns emerge to keep them apart? Or have they both finally found a connection worth throwing away the playbook for?

Almost Perfect 😉🥰

It is very rare, that I will consider any story perfect. However, this story is pretty darn close.

Our two main characters both had realistic and relatable flaws. I wanted them to win, and rooted for them to arrive at their HEA.

Our heroine spoke from our truth as a woman from the African Diaspora pertaining to the novelties of interracial dating, specifically with a caucasian men. Her concerns were warranted but was not whole plot line.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Our here was PERFECT, after the scene at the club I literally said you need to marry him to-morr-ow!!🥰
I hurt for him as he dealt with the unknowns of his illness and spiraling behaviors.

For this particular story I would love more answers:

Did his business partner have a real dialogue with hime about the problem employee after the last blow up? 🔍What was the result of that? fyi, our hero was right in that, that particular employee need to be separated from the company.👊🏾

Darius lack of desire to deal with the conflict dealing pertaining to the business actually help to compound the issues lead male was dealing with

Why did he go to the NBA?

What happens after he gets his team formed?

Even if there needed to be a second epilogue: What was her father reaction to the gift? 🔍They were both close to their immediate family, can we meet them, witness how they integrate these amazing folks into their various tribes

This story is one of my favorites reads of 2022 so far and I look forward to read more from this author.

Beautiful love story

It’s great when author’s turn love stories into an opportunity to shed light on subjects that aren’t in the forefront. Can’t help but cheer for Khalil and Vanessa to get to their happily ever after. Would love to know what happens to his twin and his best friend as well. Next books please.

Mental Health

I love that this book is set in my City and that they mentioned Telway Burgers (soooo good). I lived in Madison Heights. This book touched on a really tough subject from a male perspective. Quite refreshing although at times his actions seems alarming but not enough people around him responded. I get that he was secretive about it but he needed an intervention. Overall a really great effort and I enjoyed the evolution of their relationship with mental health checks as a requirement and not an oddity.

Not believable

The banter was extremely bland. Not witty or even mildly amusing. The guy had literally no flaws except occasional bouts of depression/anxiety.
In an effort to show how "perfect" he is, one scene that had me rolling my eyes: okay, so, he sees her wearing heels in a club and carries her to a chair to give her a foot massage. In public! In a club! Who does that? She was not complaining that her feet hurt... idk...it's just odd.

Anyways, the characters felt extremely flat. On believable.

Excluding the careers, this felt like it could be a coming-of-age book.

Great romance and real issues written very well!

Loved how their relationship unfolded and highlighted the good and the dark. The intimate moments were definitely written honestly with what a man may enjoy apart from stereotypical likes. Raw emotions depicting what depression can look like were enlightening. Great writing!

Enjoyed This

The story was too good. Fluff but enough. The characters were nice and you fell in love with them as they did. The narrator pulled me in with his voice. This book was very well read and written.

Love the story line.

Loved the characters and the focus on mental health, but the ending felt very rushed.
