Story
My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

“You are the savior of mankind” are the last words I ever expected to hear while nibbling on fries. The thing is, I’m not mankind saving material. I don’t even have magic (and just found out it exists). I’m the most boring, normal(ish) human ever. Suddenly, I’m being tossed right into the middle of a fight that started years before I was even born, and then I get partnered up with Alastair, a quirky magical Guardian. Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part. What’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner - an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it. Marcus - or, as I like to call him: Fangy McFangface - would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words, and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not.

When I gave up life as a hitman, I thought everything was going to be better. I was going to become a PI, help people, and live normally…and then I met Jeremy, the most perfect man to have ever saved my life (I mean, he might be the only one who has saved my life, but he’s still the best at it). From that point on, it was all over for me - I knew we were meant to be. The issue is that he doesn’t…quite seem to realize that. But when he’s targeted by criminals (literally, someone just shot at his head), he needs to rely on someone, so why not me?

Publisher's Summary
Hiro
Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death...the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense. Still, the more I’m around Maddox, the more I realize that beneath that surly exterior is a kind and caring man who will do anything to help.
Maddox
When another man dies, I know we have a serial killer on our hands - the same murderer who has remained elusive for a year and a half. To add to my frustration, I keep running into Hiro at crime scenes, only to hear him claim that he can talk to ghosts. The words of the dead could lead us to the serial killer and even tell us who is next, but ghosts? There’s no such thing as ghosts. Hiro is determined and charming, and no matter what I do, I can’t stop letting him get involved. He's definitely snagged my attention, but when he nearly winds up dead, I know he's getting closer to the truth - and if I don’t do something soon, he might be next.
Ghost of Lies is full of action, mystery, humor, and romance. Though more is planned for this couple, the mystery is solved and there is a happy ending.

thoroughly entertained
Would I listen to it again: yes
Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was I invested in the characters: yes
📖 Story comment: Good pace, entertaining plot with fun and likeable characters.
Never a dull moment - with mystery, mayhem, and the constant banter between characters both alive and dead - this was a delightfully entertaining story and I hope there are many more additions to this series.
🎧 Narrator comment: Greg Boudreaux has done a masterful performance bringing the characters and story to life. He has good timing, rhythm, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other. A thoroughly enjoyable performance from a narrator at the top of his game.

Another home run!!!
Alice Winters is quickly becoming one of my fav MM writers, she makes a point of making the male characters actually seem like they really ARE men, I also appreciate the roles she has the main characters play”in the intimate” area, like 99% of MM authors will either A: make the main characters flip flop from total bttm throughout the entire book, than turn into a top, news flash! Even though gay men will say their vers, they are honestly 100% bttms, especially if they’ve got a big strong hot guy who’s a top, tops are tops cause they don’t like to bttm, it’s not something that means the mm couple are truly in love, when the bttm turns into a top, it’s just awkward and WIERD for a real gay guy to read…who I’m guessing is the target audience of MM romance!! AND B: even though the main is a bttm, she doesn’t write them like they are just women which is also virtually done 99% of the time when women write MM novels, let me tell ya from an actual bttm we’re just as butch as the top, don’t write us as helpless women with penis’s….it’s rare to find a female author who actually writes the males in MM novels as actual males, so BRAVO to Alice Winters, keep writing the great stories you’ve put out, and I’ll remain a devoted fan!! ;-)

LOVED IT So Much
What a great listen this story was, I enjoyed it from the first chapter till very end. I am usually not a big fan of ghost stories, but a huge Alice Winters fan so I gave it a try and so glad I did. Ghost of Lies was captivating and full of surprises, twists and unexpected turns, interesting characters and heart-breaking mystery. Narrator made this book even better with his amazing voice and storytelling ability. This was a perfect listening experience.

Confusing Ending
The story line was great! The narrator was awesome. Character development and personality was portrayed superbly.
However, the ghost bird… What happened to him? Does he stay with Hiro? Also, something I found confusing… the killer. The group of people he wanted dead were older than he was. The Nicholas, Steven, killer triangle didn’t make sense. Was Millie a teen or was she Nicholas and Steven’s age. Millie’s mother was another twist that we didn’t hear any more about. That was was good but could have been left out as it had no real bearing. I’d like to know if Reggie and Natalie make an appearance in other novels.

Wonderfully suspenseful
Really enjoyed this take on a supernatural detective story , I could see it making a really good TV show. the ghost characters are just as great as the living ones. Reggie was annoying at first but I grew to love him, so I guess that was really good writing as it followed the experience of Hiro. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say this is one I highly recommend.
The narrator was brilliant . I never got confused about characters and was completely pulled into the story.
Another reviewer mentioned the narrator's pronunciation of Nicholas, well the character's name is actually Nicolás which has an acute stress on the A, so that's why it's not pronounced the typical English/English American way, the narrator hasn't chosen to pronounce the name in a strange way, that's how Winter has written it.

Annoying ghosts
The story is ok, nothing inventive but entertaining enough. The female ghost friend was tiring, but at least her presence was sporadic. I was enjoying it up until Reggie showed up. Almost 10 hours in -- and I had to go and check whether this character stays in the book 2 or not, because his presence became too much for me. There is a sassy character, and then there is Reggie who is a gay caricature on steroids. Just no. I regret buying this book now.

Only the narration is good
I added a star because the story was entertaining for the largest part. The finale, though, was so annoying I am in a bad mood. The cranky ghost was over the top in the end and not believable in their reasoning. Why they suddenly showed up and became a main character, flabbergasted me for half the novel. The whole plot collapsed like a house build of cards. Lots of coincidences and convenient 'estrangements' and irrational behavior, closed of with the detective starting to spin implausible stories to explain it all, in the end.
Well narated

Loved it!
I really enjoyed this book. The story was very interesting and it kept me guessing until the end. The humour had me laughing out loud. The narrator was fantastic. He was great with both male and female voices and it was easy to tell the difference between each character.

Good story. Only minor gripes
Great story and fun characters. Lots of lovely snark. A nice romance. I enjoyed it.
Only 2 minor problems-
Alice’s obsession with the use of the words hunk, hunkalicious and sketchy! She needs a thesaurus as it’s very evident and annoying at times.
Also the narrator needs to learn how to pronounce Nicholas. I thought maybe it was the author specifying that pronunciation. Maybe it was pronounced like that in other countries I though. But I could find NO country that pronounced it like that. Greg Boudreaux was just murdering the pronunciation. Greg occasionally pronounced Hiro as Chiro as well.

Really loved this
Absolutely loved this, right up there with The Hitman series, which was my favourite Alice book.
The mystery murder was really well done, I couldn't stop listening.
It made me laugh out loud a lot and I loved the story and characters.
Loved it all.
Can't wait until the next one comes out.

So good
I've been passing by this book because I really don't like ghost themed stories but a book slump made me give it a go.
Best decision ever!
It's so well written and the narration is one of the best I've listened to - just so on point. He's got the perfect sassy tone for Hiro and the gruff grumpy detective who reluctantly yet inevitably falls for him.
This is going to be one of those pick-me-up books that I re-listen to all the time and is going straight to my favourites collection 🤓

3* romance/4* mystery/5* sassy side characters
Definitely recommend having a box of tissues handy for the last 10min. 😭 All the feels!
A little to heavy emotionally to be called a cosy romance mystery but it has very similar elements, no graphic gore or violence, a prickly cinnamon roll love interest, adorable sassy animal sidekick and so on.
I was kept guessing right up to the reveal but I'm wondering if that's because I didn't find it clear who was where when. Will definitely listen to again to see if I can connect the dots.

Outstanding Narrator and Story
This one is fantastic, and Greg Bordreaux once again proved why he is one of my top 2 narrators.
I had no clue who the killer was until it actually came to it. Absolutely. No. Clue. I'll admit I'm never the fastest one to pick 'whodunit', but I usually have a bit of an idea or a 'maybe it's them' list by 3/4 through. But nope, zip, nada. Complete surprise!
I love Alice Winters' humour, but for me it doesn't work so much on the written page, but in conjunction with a good narrator/voice actor (let's face it they are actors not just narrators), it is pure gold.

Great start to the series
Really enjoyed Ghost of Lies due to the entertainment value of the ghosts, mainly Natalie & Reggie. They were both hilarious and really enjoyed messing with Hiro, they both got such a kick out of constantly stirring him up.
Always glad when it isn't obvious who the bad guy is going to be, not being able to pick them out kept me guessing right up until the big reveal. This author is hit & miss for me, some of her series I've absolutely loved, others I've had difficulty getting through the first book. Happy to say ghost of Lies is going into the first category.
Greg Boudreaux, as usual, puts in a wonderful performance - I do very much enjoy listening to audios that he narrates.

Seriously fantastic!
I don’t know how Alice does it? Another fantastic story and a truely wonderful voiceover also. Just suited the characters and the story perfectly.
