Story
Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Publisher's Summary
Mutiny is threatened. Madness festers. Treachery is never far away.
War rages in the north. As the Varin Knights march to join Tukor in their conflict against Rasalan, Elyon Daecar finds himself embroiled in a world of secrets and lies. Saska has one goal: to assassinate Lord Kastor. Posing as a captured servant girl, she infiltrates the Kastor warcamp to face her demons, but before long finds herself hopelessly out of her depth. Enemies close in, old and new…and history has a habit of repeating itself.
Driven by the whispers of a long dead god, Jonik seeks a new purpose as he’s pursued by the order he betrayed. His journey will take him south, across the paths of men and monsters. Some seek to slay him; others to help guide him. And all the while his legend spreads.
With the Warrior King plotting to take full control of the north, sinister forces stir in the south. Some fight to stall war, others seek to incite it, as chaos and calamity threaten to engulf all the world. Kings will fall, champions will rise, secrets and prophesies will be unearthed.
The next great Renewal approaches, they say. But will it be the last?

Excellent sequel
The Song of the First Blade was very good but this sequel is a step up. The characters are well developed and story is getting more and more engaging. Steven Brand’s performance is brilliant, as usual. At the end I felt sad that it was over and left wondering whether I can wait for the audiobook or if I should just go ahead and read the final book

No "Book 2" lag here. It's all killer, no filler.
Lets just get this part out of the way: Brand is a terrible narrator. Giving his performance 2 stars is very kind on my part.
Anyway, many times a second book in a series suffers from mid-story lag, but this one doesn't do that. Not even in the slightest. Loved the second book even more than the first and I'm itching to read the third book. Well done Mr. Edge. Overall would have been 5 stars but Brand really makes that part difficult. I can't help but wonder how much better it would have been with the likes of Collin Mace at the helm. Just a suggestion. I wouldn't even mind if you changed narrators mid-stream for Mace to take it on.
