Publisher's Summary

At the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains sits the small farm towns of Rockwell, Sugar Loaf, and Liledoun, North Carolina. A large family struggles to survive the chaotic nature of the family head: their mother, a terrifying blend of rage, disappointment, and religious command. Her husband follows sheepishly behind, a monster of his own kind.

And then there’s young Jesse: unwanted from conception, but kept as a pawn for her mother’s bidding. Her life is a tale of growing up with no one to count on but herself.

A story of southern hills, a mother’s neglect, fireflies, kidnapping, birth, death, and the taste of sweet mulberries ripened by the sun. Jesse is a girl, hidden, who becomes a woman, discovered.

Beautiful Story

Listening to this audio book was such a journey. The abuse that Jesse endured and the strength it took for her to find herself and heal was a beautiful story to hear. I believe this story is important for all people not just survivors of abuse. Thank you Jesse for sharing such a personal journey.

A book of great courage and inspiration!

I knew Jesse when she was a teenager. Her mother and I were friends. I witnessed some of the abuse she speaks of but was surprised it went so deep. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Jesse is a "quality" human being and a survivor. I love her now and always will. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles to free themselves from the bondage of false beliefs and any kind of abuse...Good for you, Jesse!!

loved it.. . BEWARE SPOILERS !!

This book was wonderful from the very beginning tp the very end . The story of Jesse 's life is heartbreaking, but she still manages to make you laugh many times throughout the book . It's great to hear a happy ending. Also , making sure she shared at the end where all of her siblings and herself ended up after surviving a horrible narcissist mother . I applaud Jesse for over coming everything she endured throughout her life. I admire the care and love she showed for her siblings. she might've been a better mother at 10 than I am at 41 !! Never ending work , always being told she was nothing and worthless, but still managing to eventually find self love and inner peace . A lesson for us all ..I fell in love with Jesse hearing her story . Thank you so much for sharing and especially for the happy ending !

Heartbreaking and Inspirational All At Once

This book was so touching and relatable for me. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a book to give a glimpse into the world of familial abuse. It is both truthful and at times unbelievable to think about the events described. I know the feeling of sexual, physical and emotional abuse, so I am intimately aware that these things happen, unfortunately far too often. The strength and bravery the author had in order to make this book possible must have taken a very long time to gather. My heart is there with Jesse, and I am so thankful for this book. ❤️

This story has it all💜

I headlined this review as this story instead of this book. That’s what it is it’s her story. I listened to the entire book in 2 days. I couldn’t stop. It has everything hope, struggle, joy, sadness, laughter and every single other emotion and feeling in between. Jesse’s strength and courage come through so beautifully. The love and compassion she carries inside her for her family (even the not deserving) shines in a way that the rest of the world should be so lucky to encounter even if just for a moment in their lifetime. I’m so glad I read this, it has forever changed my view and helped me overcome some of my own trauma.

Thank you so much Jesse for your continued bravery in sharing your story with the world.

Not that good

I got this book based on an interview on suffer the little children. This author doesn’t remember the sexual abuse by her step dad. And her life was no different than any other poor child anywhere. I grew up much, much worse. Quit your whining and get on living.

Good book

The book is very good but the narrator reads it like she's reading to first graders. I think she thinks it is a fairytale. Very annoying!!
