Publisher's Summary

A brutal warrior, Kratos is a slave to the gods of Olympus. Plagued by the nightmares of his past and yearning for freedom, the Ghost of Sparta would do anything to be free of his debt to the gods. He is on the verge of losing all hope when the gods give him one last task to end his servitude. He must destroy Ares, the god of war. But what chance does a mere mortal have against a god?

Armed with the deadly chained Blades of Chaos, guided by the goddess Athena, and driven by his own insatiable thirst for vengeance, Kratos seeks the only relic powerful enough to slay Ares---a quest that will take him deep into the mysterious temple borne by the Titan Cronos! From the black depths of Hades to the war-torn city of Athens to the lost desert beyond, God of War sheds a brutal new light on the best-selling video game and on the legend of Kratos.

A great book

I think both fans of the God of War series and people who have never played the game before will enjoy this book. It fleshes out the character of Kratos more fully. Although it does not stick strickly to the exact events of the game I think this is a point in it's favor, since most people who buy this book will be people who have also played the game they will most likely not just want to listen to a description of the events of the game.
As for the narration, I think that Stephen Hoye does a very good job. I only have a few small complaints that have to do with putting the wrong sort of emotion in Kratos' voice, but these instances are few and far between and all in all they don't really hinder the immersion.

Fantastic story and amazing narration

I have listened to this book multiple times and I have never even played the game! I love the narration by Stephen Hoye and the storyline itself. It is a wonderful light listen while going on about your day. I highly recommend it!!

Love God of War..... BUT!!!

I love the games! I have played and beaten them more times than I can count.. This story is OK as well but lacking towards the end.. No army of hades? No cerberus? Seemed rushed towards the end and it shows! Also the narrator doesn't match the games tone and voice! Again also.... He mis pronounces most all the names

One continuous fight.

Definitely a novelization of the game. If you're looking for a audiobook that has a very choppy storyline and is basically one continuous fight for 10 hours, this is the book for you.

Good, But, Not A Masterpiece.

This book is great, with a wonderful storyline and character development. But, in my humble opinion, it has nothing on the novelization of the newest game. That is my absolute favorite God of War novel they've created yet! I just purchased God of War II, and plan on staying it either tonight, or tomorrow morning. I'll havea review on it directly. I would recommend you give these books a listen if you, A) like the God of War games, B) are into Greek and/ or Roman mythology, or, my personal favorite, C) love them both! Lol! It's an enjoyable listen though. Strongly recommended!

I couldn’t get past the mispronunciation

The story was great until I was distracted by the mispronunciation. It wouldn’t have been so bad if they weren’t common words, but dang…. Definitely need a different performer.

Great game, great story

Dude doesn't sound like it, but I feel like he does a pretty good Kratos impression

Very accurate to the games though I tended to zone out

The Book follows the first game to a tea and adds some extra. More details on characters motivations and explanations that aren’t in the game. However be it the Voice actor or something on my end I felt like I couldn’t listen to the book for more than a couple hours at a time before I started to drift off. Regardless if you want to know the story of the game but aren’t able to get a copy of it this is a great substitute

Good story bad narrator

The entire time it sounded like the narrator didn't even put any effort into his performance
