The death of a teenage Amish girl in a cornfield looks like an accident, but sheriff Serenity Adams suspects foul play. To solve the murder, she must investigate the nearby Amish community with the help of a man who was shunned years ago. At first glance, the case seems obvious. The poor girl was probably accidently shot during hunting season, but when the elders of the Amish community and even the girl's parents react with uncaring subdued behavior, Serenity becomes suspicious.

Publisher's Summary
Linda Castillo’s best-selling series has been called “gripping” (People)and “impossible to put down” (Bookpage) and the “teeth chattering suspense” (USA Today) continues with Gone Missing—a deeply chilling novel about a rite of passage gone horribly wrong.
Rumspringa is the time when Amish teens are allowed to experience life without the rules. It’s an exciting time of personal discovery and growth before committing to the church. But when a young teen disappears without a trace, the carefree fun comes to an abrupt and sinister end, and fear spreads through the community like a contagion.
A missing child is a nightmare to all parents, and never more so than in the Amish community, where family ties run deep. When the search for the presumed runaway turns up a dead body, the case quickly becomes a murder investigation. And chief of Police Kate Burkholder knows that in order to solve this case she will have to call upon everything she has to give not only as a cop, but as a woman whose own Amish roots run deep.Kate and state agent, John Tomasetti, delve into the lives of the missing teen and discover links to cold cases that may go back years. But will Kate piece together all the parts of this sinister puzzle in time to save the missing teen and the Amish community from a devastating fate? Or will she find herself locked in a fight to the death with a merciless killer?

- Mom to Three!

(Spoilers) I love the series but...
some things just aren't working. Too much repetition. We understand she used to be Amish. "Tomasetti" is used approximately 400 times in the book. Call him "John". Give him a laxative. I'm sorry he sounds severely constipated. The police chief gains magical powers whenever it's mentioned she used to be Amish & knows Pa Dutch. The facts about being Amish & leaving are a little off. She left before she was baptized. She is not subject to severe lifetime punishment as portrayed in the series. Yes, some families are disappointed when their child doesn't join up. But they are not shunned for life. Now Kate's magical powers are out of the way (& a continual reminder that she used to be Amish and was raped. Now she is hated by the entire Amish community BUT is called upon to save all of law enforcement when the Amish are involved with every crime imaginable for a small town.)
Like with Kate, we are continually reminded that John lost his wife & kids in a horrible way. We get that he has every issue imaginable. PTSD worse than any combat veteran. This guy hates everyone & wants to blow off heads. I nearly quit at one point because the overreacting was elementary. Getting out of hand. I do like the voice performances. Except his. The sexual interaction between the two while people are graphically being murdered all around them is also absurd. Especially when the man sounds like he hasn't been able to use the bathroom in weeks. Romance not needed.
Once you get past the repetition, Amish superpowers, John's bowel problems, and the police chief & him acting like horny teenagers you have an incredible, amazing story! I stayed up for 3 hours one night listening non-stop! Sometimes her storylines are very predictable & boring. But for the most part, she's got it! A real talent. That's why I've nearly purchased the whole series. Keep it coming!
Do better research on the Amish, narrator please don't make them sound like robots (they carry a faint accent, but aren't cavemen & women), no need to reintroduce the same character in each & every book (I literally jump around & never miss a thing from a previous book), relax about her being ex-Amish (in real life she wouldn't be massively shunned for life by the whole community for leaving before baptism), in an Amish heavy area of the state there are TONS of Amish & English who know Pa Dutch. Send John to California & let's be done w him. Fix all that & the series is GENIUS!!!

An intriguing Tale with the Amish angle prominent.
Most of us approach a new Author & Narrator with a deal of trepidation but I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed all four of the books in this series.
The development of the lead characters over the course of the 4 books is subtle & gradual. This book has a good story which brings in the Amish setting in a surprising manner.
The narration is excellent and even though the main male character is quite gruff, Kathleen McInerney has developed a voice for him which conveys his troubled background admirably.
Altogether a most enjoyable read & series.

No. 4 in exciting Amish series.
This is the fourth in the Police Chief Kate Burkholder series. Kate is police chief in a small town which borders on an Amish community-one in which Kate grew up herself in the Amish faith, and which she left without committing to the church. She is therefore an outsider in the normal “Englisher” community as well as considered a traitor to the Amish community. But she has made a good name for herself and both sides trust her to be fair and work with her. This case begins with a fight between two teenage girls, one of them her own relative. She breaks up the fight but learns that Sadie Miller has very strong dreams to leave the Amish community and the stultifying atmosphere. Then, a girl turns up missing in another Amish community and Kate consults, because of her knowledge of Amish ways and Pennsylvania Dutch. But two things happen which pull Kate in opposite directions. First, the disappeared girl turns up as a dead body and thus a homicide. And, she learns that her relative has gone missing. It soon becomes clear that there have been several missing girls in the past who have not been found, and they have all been Amish teenagers who “disobeyed the rules” of the church. Is this a hate crime against the Amish? Is this perpetrated by an Amish person punishing girls who don’t conform? Or are Amish girls more vulnerable because they don’t get the street knowledge of a regular teenager? And will Kate figure all of this out before it is too late to save her relative? This series continues in its exciting page-turning fashion. The narrator is very good, and this book leaves us with kind of a cliff-hanger ending so we know there will be another book.

One of the Best Murder Mysteries Written
Never a dull moment when Kate Burkholder takes on a murder case. Outstanding writer, Linda Castillo does not let her reads down. You will become part of the story as if you are standing beside Chief Burkholder , watching, listening and taking notes the whole way through as the story progresses. Don't let this book get by you. Add it to your library. I would give it more stars if possible. It's a 10 on my list of books/

Enjoyable
Enjoyable series so far. I think the narrator is very talented. Hoping that the series keeps up the standard set by the early books. Running out of things to say so gave all the books, prior to this, the same review!
However, now 4 or 5 books in, and the very popular story line with authors, the “will they, won’t they”, or commitment phobic characters is slightly tiresome. For me that relationship isn’t vital so I wish they’d act their age and commit or not so we can all move on!
The storylines don’t need it in my opinion. All the characters and stories are interesting enough to just omit relationship insecurities.

And again another Amish-Psychopath Thriller
This is a solidly written crime novel again located in the Amish/English community. Again Kate Burkholder and Tomasetti are trying to get their relationship going and again Kate isn't really sure. Again hideous crimes are done and the victims are again Amish young females. Somehow I was wondering if I had listened to it before. In my opinion so far the weakest of the four novels featuring Burkholder.
