Publisher's Summary

In Good Day!: The Paul Harvey Story, author Paul J. Batura follows the remarkable life of one of the founding fathers of the news media. Paul Harvey started his career during the Great Depression and narrated America's story day by day, through wars and peace, the threat of communism and the crumbling of old colonial powers, consumer booms and eventual busts.

Whether he was covering racial tensions, terrorist attacks, or which vitamins to take, Paul Harvey articulated the American experience for average people making their way in a world too large for quick comprehension. Harvey brought them that world "in dime store words," with a deep sense of optimism, faith, and patriotism.

Featuring a foreword by Mike Huckabee, Good Day! is the only biography of its kind; Good Day! is Harvey's story, the rest of the story, as he would tell it himself.

"Harvey's legacy couldn't be in more capable hands." (Dr. James Dobson, National Radio Hall of Fame broadcaster and founder of Focus on the Family)
"Beyond the story of a life well-lived, Good Day! captures the essence of this late radio pioneer. Mr. Harvey embodied our common American ideals." (Mike Huckabee, FOX News political commentator and former governor of Arkansas)
"Paul Harvey: a voice of reason, a voice of common sense, an eloquent spokesman for the America and the Americans he loved. Open this book and read 'the rest of the story.'" (Ben Stein, author, actor, economist, and journalist)

Should have been better

I have been a huge Paul Harvey fan since I was a kid. I like biographies. This instead of delving deep into Harvey's life this book seemed more like a report a college student would write. It's nice knowing what the weather was like on his first day of work but I would have rather had more insight from friends and family.

tedious stretch of a few interesting details

Would you try another book from Paul J. Batura and/or Paul J. Batura?

If the author's other books are written in the same style, it would be very unlikely that I'd read another book, unless the subject matter could not be read about from other sources (as was the case in this book).

What was most disappointing about Paul J. Batura’s story?

The stretching of details was very disappointing. A single sentence like "Paul's father was killed while on a patrol with the Tulsa sheriff" was stretched out to include details that seemed to have been sourced from the almanac, newspaper clippings, the encyclopedia, the US census and any other source to be an entire CHAPTER chapter that described the humidity, temperature, wind speed, city population, age of the patrol vehicle, middle name of the sheriff, racial profile of the perpetrator, and other types of details. The author then speculated how this event might have affected the subject matter often without quoting any sources that would substantiate the claims.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

There were a some interesting stories and details about the subject matter, but they were few and far between.

Could you see Good Day! being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Perhaps, and as a movie I could at least fast forward to the few interesting parts.

Any additional comments?

If you are really interested in finding out about Paul Harvey and have no other mechanism to hear about his life then you might find this audiobook interesting.

What wonderful story of 2 people - Paul and Angel.

The reader's style is a little monotonous but I still thorouhgly enjoyed the story of Paul, his wife Angel and the history of the early days of radio and Tulsa.

Paul Harvey-loved his show

This book paints a picture of the man and his life. Not much different than you would think based on his on-air presence. What a great story!
