Story
Crick City is a small hick town. Violent, mean, and dirt-poor, it's a place nobody wants to call home. But for homicide cop Phil Straker, it is home. And now someone—or something—is turning his boyhood town into a bloody sideshow of mutilation and gruesome carnage. They're called Creekers. Centuries old, driven by rage and lust for revenge, they move through the deep, dark woods—deformed, shadowy outcasts with twisted faces and blood red eyes. Now, as the moon hangs low over their ancient house, they're gathering for a harvest of terror and death Crick City will never forget....

A Classic Mystery with Wonderful Characters
- By Robert on 12-22-08
By: Stieg Larsson, and others
Publisher's Summary
Relentless as a Texas death-match, Goon is a no-holds-barred festival of body slams; an insatiable orgy of pile-drivers and sexual grotesqueries, of neck-breakers, drop-kicks, and more blood and guts than a fish-market floor.
Six-foot-9 and 400 pounds, hailing from parts unknown, he is the one-man walking gore machine of the Deep South Wrestling Conference, and his name is Goon.
But Detective Phillip Straker isn't a wrestling fan. The bodies pile up like dirty laundry: sex-obsessed tramps used as playthings by some unspeakable creature. Straker is determined to solve the rash of mutilation murders with trimmings that beg description. Is it just coincidence, or do all the victims have something in common?
Investigative reporter Melinda Pierce will do anything to find out, by offering herself up as a sexual spittoon in order to infiltrate the arcane and lust-drenched warrens of the backstage of professional wrestling. There in malodorous locker rooms and unsavory motels, she partakes in carnal forays so gross, so downright nasty they'd make a porn star puke.
Goon, this human juggernaut, this masked rack of guts, muscle and mayhem. Is Goon just a wrestler gone insane? Or is he something hideously worse?
It just might leave you down for the count.

Totally Sick
Any additional comments?
This short horror novel delivers some seriously gruesome sexual violence along with a detailed look into the world of wrestling, which was pretty cool. 'Goon' also includes a female heroine to the male villain who is equally as violent and bad ass - a rare occasion in horror and one that I really appreciate. Overall, 'Goon' is well written, interesting, horrifying and fun. Joe Hempel never disappoints, in fact I routinely am lost in his narrations. 10/10 would recommend to any horror lovers!

Crazy, Gruesome Fun!
I used to love wrestling back in the 80's and this book brought back so many of those memories. The play on the wrestlers names made me laugh out loud at times.
I can honestly say I really didn't have any clue where the story was going. I was curious why an investigative reporter would go the lengths Melinda did for the story and Detective Straker cracked me up and you actually felt for the guy.
It was a crazy ride and the end was inevitable. The narration was perfect. I definitely enjoyed this twisted tale!

GROSSLY ENTERTAINING
Any additional comments?
I was provided this audiobook through Audiobook Boom at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.
I've never experienced this genre before and frankly, after receiving a pre-download content awareness email, I was afraid to listen to it. But I'm glad I did. It was very entertaining. A good storyline that moved right along. And I liked the paranormal twist at the end.
The out-of-line depravity was so over the top that it was comically captivating. I believe the authors felt it was lacking in filthiness so they added a Hillbilly deputy(?) recalling all his vile sexual adventures. Nope. No gagging here, just smiles and "OMG. I can't believe they wrote that!"
Characters were acceptably believable and the voices were done well. Recommended for those who can accept shameless perversion with a grain of salt and a tongue in cheek. (wink).

Twisted gory and fun
A twisted tale of murder, mayhem, mutilation and pro wrestling, with parody names of real wrestlers (Cactus Zack, Wonder Boy Slick Dare), with a cop on the trail of a possible serial killer who just might possibly be a wrestler, and a reporter determined to get to Goon, the wrestler in question. Lots of twists and turns, this story is not for the faint hearted or the weak stomached.
Joe Hempel does his usual excellent job narrating, although this one must have been difficult to narrate with a straight face.

Another Gruesome Page Turner from Edward Lee
If you are unfamiliar with Edward Lee's work, be warned, it is not remotely for the faint of heart (or stomach). There is a gross-out scene in the middle of the book that will test even the stoutest of readers.
Lots of graphic violence, sex, and gore in a short, yet solid page turner set amid the world of small conference professional wrestling.
Lots of fun references to famous real-world wrestlers.
Barring the gratuitous gross-out scene in the middle, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the unexpected plot twists only added to the fun.
Joe Hempel is a solid narrator and does not disappoint.

Entertaining!
I listened to Goon straight through. The narrator is one of my favorites, and I like extreme horror, so I decided to try out this author. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed! Chock full of the vilest imagery I've listened to in a while, Goon is not for the weak stomach crowd. I'd recommend to people already familiar with extreme horror, who like wrestling, and who can handle some extremely nasty imagery.

Here Today Goon Tomorrow
I am pretty sure what I listened to was an old school porno where the plot doesn't involve a repairman, but involves professional wrestlers. And what a glorious porno this was to listen to. I wouldn't classify this as horror other than for the reason that disgustingly graphic stories like this tend to be lumped into that genre. For those familiar with those type of stories and enjoy 80's professional wresting, you will absolutely love this book. Despite the fact that there is more sex in this story than there is plot, what you have for a plot is a lot of fun and well done. The details the author included in such a short story is quite impressive and I loved hearing the play on the names of all the classic professional wrestlers. The author has a way with words that in one moment gets you excited and in the next makes you want to puke, and that goes back and forth the entire time. As with any of the stories like this that Joe narrates, I'm can't believe he was able to maintain composure reading some of this book. Some of the sentences that he had to read I couldn't say to anyone with a straight face and not lose it. As a big fan of Joe's narrations, I enjoyed this was as much as his others and as always felt that he brought the right energy to bring the characters to life. Good Until the End
I liked this...until the end. Some of the descriptions and language were so crazy that I couldn't help but laugh. It was interesting, gross, and humorous all at once.
Unfortunately, once it went into a supernatural place seemingly out of nowhere, it kind of ruined it for me. Maybe if it had had more of a supernatural vibe before the end, I would have enjoyed the ending more.
Joe Hempel was amazing (as always). He did great accents & had tons of different voices in this book. I think it was once of his best performances!

Very well narrated vivid and grotesque images
Any additional comments?
I was offered a free copy in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.
Goon is the king of the low category of wrestling. He is tall, strong, powerful and absolutely indestructible. But Goon has a secret, because he is also a serial killer. Reporter Melinda and inspector Straker will try to demonstrate that Goon is behind all the recent murders, but they may need need to cross a dangerous line.
There are not lots of books like 'Goon', and if you decide to go for it you will need either to like the genre or listen to it with an open mind. There are several scenes that many would considerate disgusting, but if I was able to eat lunch while listening to it, it is not something that you cannot stand. If you let go you will find yourself laughing hard at the grotesque images, and even accepting the mystic part of it.
The wrestling world is something completely unknown to me, and I had no idea about the ring rats culture. It was an interesting read in which I have learned something new, and the authors gave it the ultimate twist.
Joe Hempel was, as always, superb. He delivered the story in his very personal way, making you forget that you are listening to a book. I got immersed into the story and enjoyed the ride. He even had to burp! What I said, he is a professional, and he makes you believe in the story.
This was not my typical book but I enjoyed the vivid scenes and the great narration. Even if you are not into this kind of literature, I encourage you to try it, it will be a hoot, and it is just about three and a half hours.

Story
For years, the ancient alien AI known as Skippy (the Magnificent, don’t forget that part) has been able to do one impossible thing after another. What is his secret? It’s simple: 100 percent Grade-A extreme awesomeness. And also because he had never been faced with an opponent of equal power. Until now. This time, he might need a little help from a band of filthy monkeys.

Story
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Story
The world teeters on the brink of destruction. The people who should be saving the Earth ignore Jason Asano's warnings and choose to loot the house as it burns down around them. He lacks the strength to save the world himself, but resolves to do it anyway, impossible be damned. The impossible, in this case, means seizing a power that no mortal should touch. It's a choice from which there is no turning back, and marks Jason's first step into a wider cosmos that he is not yet ready to face. Holding the fate of two worlds in his hands, Jason must decide for himself what home truly means.

Story
Nancy Kranich (played by Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne of Russian Doll and Orange Is the New Black) is a night nurse on an orbiting space station. But Nancy hates her job, is sick of space, and longs to find adventure and a safe place to smoke cigarettes that won’t blow everyone up. But when Nancy gets caught up in an outer-space conspiracy involving President Kennedy, former vice-president Richard Nixon, and an intergalactic object that could change the course of history, she gets way more adventure than she bargained for.
