Publisher's Summary

Michael Buchanan will need every bit of his extensive skill set when he appoints himself as bodyguard to a woman determined not to need one in this thrilling novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood.

Grace Isabel MacKenna has a hundred things to do today. Killing someone isn't one of them. It is supposed to be a quick visit to Boston for the Buchanan anniversary party, then on to Scotland to collect an inheritance. She checks into her hotel and then decides to go for a brisk walk. But after getting lost, she ends up with a wounded man stumbling into her arms—and his shooter coming after them both. When she fires back in self-defense, she doesn’t expect him to drop dead. After Isabel endures an interrogation by police, she is free to go, thanks to the Buchanans dispatching former Navy SEAL and now lawyer Michael Buchanan to assist her.

Isabel knows she should be grateful for Michael’s help, but since she’s harbored an extreme dislike for him for years, gratitude is difficult to muster. Michael has appointed himself her de facto guardian, and she’s stuck with him despite their constant bickering and sizzling attraction. Even when Isabel goes to Scotland to claim her inheritance, Michael follows her—but he isn’t the only thing she can’t shake. Mysterious threats against Isabel surface, and before they can deal with their growing feelings for each other, Michael and Isabel must first survive.

Critic Reviews

“Narrator Samantha Brentmoor brings to life the romance between Isabel MacKenna and Michael Buchanan. [Isabel] is the type of person people gravitate to, and Brentmoor deftly conveys her warmth and compassion. As a lawyer and former Navy SEAL, Michael has a no-nonsense personality, and Brentmoor reflects this with a clear and concise portrayal. She injects humor into her narration, especially when it comes to Isabel's driving.”AudioFile Magazine

“Garwood delivers plenty of twists to keep the suspense brewing and a subplot about Grace’s potential music career adds color. Readers will be hooked."Publishers Weekly

“Fans of the series will clamor for this book, which can also be read as a standalone.”Library Journal

Not for me

I've enjoyed lots of Garwood's books but this one was more than I could handle. Made it about an hour before the sheer ditz-brain inanity of the main character just wore me out. Between that and the extreme overly-guttural tone applied to the male characters, I simply could not listen any more.

Ditzy blonde, obnoxious male, no real development

I have read almost every book Julie Garwood has written and after these last few titles, I’m ready to give up. The “heroine” obviously has more hair than brains and no backbone. The “hero” is obnoxious, cruel and never apologizes for the pain he knowingly causes. Neither character shows any real development and, other than constantly having inner dialogue about how hot the other one is, there wasn’t any real foundation for their supposed love. I’ll be returning it ASAP. I tried skipping to the last two chapters and couldn’t even make it through that! Not worth a credit.

Who’s writing Mrs Garwood’s books ?

I’m been reading Julie Garwood’s books for years loving her wit ,excellent dialogue and good storyline. I own everyone of her previous books. This one must be written by a ghost writer. It’s sad to see her well developed characters in this family destroyed by bad writing .I’m so sad to see a great writer be destroyed by a bad ghost writer . It’s a sad ending to a marvelous career

Narrator

Voice of main male character was SO annoying. Also wish the female character stood up for herself

SHE’S BACK❤️❤️❤️

I’ve been reading Julie Garwood since 1989, when I read “The Bride”, and I have to admit, I resisted the change from historical to current day novels, but was quickly converted. Grace is one of the most unique and endearing heroines ever; smart, strong, funny, quirky, and more. The story never lags, but moves surprising smoothly from one challenging situation to another, completely different, scenario. I had to force myself to stop listening a few times, simply because I didn’t want the story to end. And btw, Samantha Brentmoor is a new-to-me narrator, but I’ll be searching for other books she’s done.
Welcome back, Julie Garwood. We missed you.

Hokey, Ms Garwood!

No wonder this was on sale for $8.73, but my listening time will not come back. I am a 20 year fan of this author make no mistake, but this story was droning on and on as if Ms.Garwood had a student of her writing continue with this series or she changed editor who is just plain awful at telling this seasoned writer to go back and re write chapters. Gads, what a waste of my new narrator discovery! I own another of her reads that was the daily deal, Flame. Her voice is reminiscent of Tanya Eby/Tatiana Sokolov.
Now, l have to go back and re listen to Sweet Talk or Mercy as they are examples of Ms Garwoods’ good talent. I get that every book can not hit the best seller list but don’t be lazy on re writes or taking an editors advice because your long time fans know your talented written books.
Were my comments of help?

Beyond excellent narration

Julie Garwood’s stories are always 10/10 and this one did not disappoint. I loved everything about the new characters but also the ability to reconnect with old favorites. The narration of this title, in my opinion is the best narrated book I have ever listened too. The different voices and accents were amazingly spot on. Would highly recommend.

Oh dear...

Struggled to finish. Narration was fine other than very dodgy Scottish accents. The overall story could have been good but too damn long. So much 'filler' nonsense. The hero Michael was, in my opinion, a complete jerk - I'd have kicked him to the kerb on day one. He was bossy and selfish. I didn't for one second believe he cared deeply about her - it was more for his control. ugh! Isobel vacillated between being very able and competent and a serious ninny. This book needs a serious editing overhaul and the POV was all over the place - I thought that was one writing rule we were supposed to adhere to - no 'head bopping'. Swivel heads in this story. A lot of hours of my life I won't get back. I should have packed it in half way through but stupidly kept hoping it would improve. It didn't.

Good but….

The narrator was rather skilled at multiple voices. However, her pronunciation of ‘thanks’ will make you grit your teeth!!!! Story pretty much the same as all
The non period books, which are by far THEEE best!

I didn't like the fake male voices

It's a pity to have to put up with such poor male voices, they were just no believable.
The story is quite good although a bit too detailed at times, but the male voices/ characters are painful.
I think the characters were written with an action block buster in mind! Not very believable but likable enough.
In my opinion the story/plot is better than the writting. The love story is well done and enjoyable -except for Michael's hawful a tonal voice, no range of emotion at all.....
