Story
I know you. I know you in a way you can’t even imagine. I have been searching for you in the years since you wrote that letter - the letter that told me you were looking for me too. But now that I’ve found you, I don’t know if I can say the terrible truth of what I am. It would ruin your perfect life. It would hurt your beautiful daughter. So, I hesitate - bide my time, for now.

Story
Teresa’s heart stops when she enters her daughter’s bedroom to find that her sweet, trusting little girl is gone. Teresa can’t bear to think who would snatch a terrified three-year-old from her mother in the middle of the night, but all the signs point to someone close to home. Hasn’t Jessica’s stepfather been acting a little oddly? Or is it, as Teresa is beginning to fear, something to do with Angie, her daughter’s babysitter who lives next door...?

Story
When Sophie’s life falls apart, she accepts an invitation from a childhood friend, Caroline, to visit her family’s beautiful beach house, miles from the nearest town. The silence is broken only by the rhythmic crash of the waves against the jagged black rocks below. But when Sophie arrives, she finds her friend much changed. Caroline - who used to be so warm and confident - is secretive and on-edge, spending long, unexplained hours away from her family. And then there’s Caroline’s little daughter Lucy - who stopped speaking soon after they moved in.

I didn’t turn up uninvited. He asked me to come. He didn’t need to ask twice. He knew I’d agree. Kind Laura. Obedient Laura. Laura the soft-spoken schoolteacher with the faded cardigans and flat shoes. Nobody ever suspected someone like me would appeal to handsome, charismatic, happily married Ralph. I think even he was surprised by his choice. But I’m used to people underestimating me. But then maybe I underestimated Ralph, too. Because I never thought he’d be capable of doing what he did. It wasn’t only dangerous, it was very, very wrong.

Publisher's Summary
My dearest daughter, I will never forget the day I nearly lost you. The day you learned the secrets that would tear our lives apart....
Time stops for Jen when her beloved daughter, Gracie, is involved in a terrible car crash. Pronounced dead at the scene, it's a miracle when paramedics manage to then resuscitate the little girl. The relief Jen feels at Gracie's recovery is matched only by her fury at the driver of the car - her ex-husband's new girlfriend, Ella. Jen has never trusted Ella, and now her worst fears have been confirmed.
But then Gracie begins to tell strange stories about what she heard in the car that day and what she saw in those moments near death. It's clear that there's something shocking hidden in Ella's past, but exposing it could tear all their lives apart.
An emotional pause resister that will take your breath away. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Lisa Wingate, and Kerry Fisher.

Sneaks up on you
For the first third I was waiting for something to happen and then it hooked me. It's an unusual story line. Try to purchase on sale as a credit might be too much. The narration was pleasant except when the child was upset. Then the voice was so high pitched that it was like nails on a chalkboard.

Predictable story with annoying narration
I wish I hadn't bothered, from start to finish the story was so predictable. Gracie doesn't have a secret, I kept listening, in the vain hope that something (other than what I had assumed from paragraph one) would happen. Oh and the narration, dear god, it was like nails scraping on a blackboard, all in all a waste of a credit.

Exciting well written story
I enjoyed this story with its intriguing twists and turns. I love how the lives of the characters weave in and out of one another in the past and present. The author reveals the subtle twists bit by bit until the final plot is revealed. I did guess some of it sooner than she wanted me to, but this didn't detract from the story.
The narrator is very expressive, even to the point of overdoing the emotional voices of the overwrought characters, but this was better than some of the dull, flat narrators I have listened to in the past.
Matt appears in Jenny's life just after her little daughter Gracie is involved in a serious car accident. Jenny, recently separated from her husband, comes across as an incredibly emotionally fragile and vulnerable person, an obsessively smotheringly overprotective mother, even taking into account that Gracie nearly died in the car accident. She has no notion at all of discipline and just lets Gracie do as she wants, so grateful is she that Gracie is alive. She doesn't even seem to relate to her daughter as a proper person, baby-talking down to her in an annoyingly coochy-coo singsong, though Gracie seems mature for her age, with interests, opinions, thoughts of her own and the ability to hold a proper conversation. Jenny disbelievingly dismisses Grace's near death experience of heaven and meeting her dead grandpa as "just a dream". Gracie herself comes across like an obnoxious, disobedient, whiny brat with her irritatingly high pitched squeaky voice. She repeatedly runs away or wriggles out of her mother's arms, no doubt protesting the smothering embrace and lack of understanding of her experiences. One wonders how this kind of overbearing mothering will affect her as she gets older.
I won't reveal what happens as Matt and Jenny become emotionally close, or the final outcome, but it's really a great story.

This is without a doubt the worst book I have ever read and believe me I have read hundreds.
Although it was reasonably well narrated the story line was so slushy and wishy-washy it was weak and pathetic.
