Publisher's Summary

“Delightful.” (The New York Times Book Review)

A psychic travel agent and a Seattle PD detective solve a murder in this quirky mystery in the vein of Lisa Lutz’s The Spellman Files and Charlaine Harris’s Aurora Teagarden series.

Meet Leda Foley: devoted friend, struggling travel agent, and inconsistent psychic. When Leda, sole proprietor of Foley's Flights of Fancy, impulsively re-books Seattle PD detective Grady Merritt’s flight, her life changes in ways she couldn’t have predicted.

After watching his original plane blow up from the safety of the airport, Grady realizes that Leda’s special abilities could help him with a cold case he just can’t crack.

Despite her scattershot premonitions, she agrees for a secret reason: Her fiancé’s murder remains unsolved. Leda’s psychic abilities couldn’t help the case several years before, but she’s been honing her skills and drawing a crowd at her favorite bar’s open-mic nights, where she performs Klairvoyant Karaoke — singing whatever song comes to mind when she holds people’s personal effects. Now joined by a rag-tag group of bar patrons and pals alike, Leda and Grady set out to catch a killer — and learn how the two cases that haunt them have more in common than they ever suspected.

the perfect book for what I needed

A vivid narrative voice, a cast of characters that positively jumps off the page, and witty dialog that crackles with energy: these are the three things I most want to praise. But the story is rock solid, the character development arcs are tremendously satisfying, and the use of language is inventive. I really enjoyed this book; it landed just right with me.

A large part of its appeal was the narrator's voice. I felt like a friend was telling me the story. I resonated with the point of view expressed. I deeply appreciated the creative use of language, the novel figures of speech, and elegant turns of phrase. This is all complimented by Ms. Mohanty's warm delivery to create an approachable and sophisticated listening experience. I wanted to keep listening in part because it was so comfortable to hang out with the narrator.

Which brings us to the main character, who has immense appeal. Behind an open and engaging demeanor, her deeply layered personality and emotional complexity provide context for significant personal development. Lita takes center stage, of course, but each of the people in the story has nuance and depth, motives and a voice all their own. These are people, not merely characters.

And when you put a couple of those people in the same room, you get dialog that positively sizzles. Throughout, the dialog continually impresses be it in witty repartee, emotional exchanges, or nuanced exposition.

I haven't touched on the story, which was well executed. The plot kept me engaged, The story had several development arcs tied up in it, and all of those helped propel the others along. No scene was wasted.

And those things are exactly what I needed from a book. As the story began to resolve, I began to dread it being over. I look forward to more of Ms. Priest's work.

Great First In Series

A travel agent psychic (Leda), a police detective (Grady) who isn’t afraid to take a chance in order to catch a killer, and a bar full of quirky friends. What's not to love? Even better, Leda isn’t trying to hide her abilities and has been honing them doing "klairvoyant karaoke. " I cannot wait for Book 2.

Is it cozy if they use sh!t?

“Brutus was a very attractive fish.”
A fun, vibrant, mostly cozy, slightly paranormal mystery.

Nicki: “You think professional Leda is the real Leda, when in fact crapshoot Leda is running point.”
Leda: “Thanks, Nick.”
Nicki: “I’m here for you babe, I’m mean, ma’am.”
There are some comfortable tropes, like the louder than life BFF Nicki who both pushes Leda to take leaps, and supports Leda no matter what. And yes, I meant louder than life, with Nicki’s exclamations of “oh my G,” Jesus and sh!t. There are also uniquely fresh aspects, like Grady, a cop with a daughter who for once isn’t an adorable youngster existing merely to bring two lovebirds together. Whether familiar or new, the characters are captivating and the dialogue is clever.

“99% worthless as a psychic, 1% super helpful.”
If you want magic or paranormal-immersive, this book isn’t it. The psychic aspect is the
only non-mundane bit. But, it’s a good bit, making for a super cute mystery about a “real life inconsequential psychic” who turns out to be consequential after all.

Unlikely Crime Solving Duo

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a non-gory murder mystery with an appealing, slightly messy psychic learning to use her abilities to help people. All of the characters were well developed, and the story is paced very well. I bought both the kindle and audible versions and enjoyed going back and forth between them as the audiobook is also great. I’ll definitely put this author on my watch list.

I loved it

I originally got this to see if it was a good comp for my current WIP. It didn’t quite work for what I was looking for, but it was still great! She really nailed the amateur sleuth storyline! Definitely looking forward to the next one!

A Fun Read

This is the first book I have read by this author. It took a little to get into the story, but flowed smoothly. Psychic Kerioke was a cute addition. I would read/listen to more in this series.
