Publisher's Summary
A perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy's decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request.
Each chapter focuses on a specific case, opening with a detailed description of the patient's diagnosis and the procedure that will need to be performed, followed by the prayer request. From there, listeners follow as Dr. Levy performs the operation, and then we wait - right alongside Dr. Levy, the patients, and their families - to see the final results.
Dr. Levy's musings on what successful and unsuccessful surgical results imply about God, faith, and the power of prayer are honest and insightful. As we see him come to his ultimate conclusion that, no matter what the results of the procedure are, "God is good," we cannot help but be truly moved and inspired.

Neurosurgical RN review
As an RN if over 40 years with ICU and Neurosurgery specialties at University if Iowa Hospitals and clinics, I was so impressed with this book! Never has a book captured the spiritual and physical power of behind the scenes! A must read, not too technical for a lay person, but just enough technicalities to empower a medical professional to be enraptured.

Hope Filled Surgery
Any additional comments?
Unashamedly Christian content.
Regardless of the outcome in surgery Dr. Levy is instrumental in offering hope to his patients.
A few may find it preachy as he spends some time on a Christian approach to dealing with unforgiveness and bitterness.
Gray Matter makes for engaging reading and is more than just a collection of surgical stories: this book details Dr Levy's own journey with faith and learning to trust God while he interacts with, prays over, and operates on his patients.

So much more than I expected!
I could've listened to this book in one sitting, it was so interesting. This man has taken his intelligence and skill and chose to use it to further the kingdom of God. The stories in this book do not always have the outcomes we would like, but that's real life. At times it's funny, at times heartbreaking, but always motivating and powerful. you don't have to be in the medical profession to relate to this book. these are common struggles that we all face in spreading the gospel. you will not be disappointed to buy this book.

I really liked this book!
I liked the interesting stories but mostly I liked hearing how he was able to overcome his hesitation to talk to people about spiritual things. He shared his struggles and they are the same ones I face, and I loved how he shared his patients issues, and how praying and sharing the love of Christ for them and His desire to forgive them and have a relationship with them, was a welcome help to most.
God is real and it's silly that we are afraid to talk about him with others. Especially since his heart is to hear from them. He really does love all of us and is waiting to hear.

I stumbled upon this accidentally ( or maybe it wasn’t as accidental as I think). God usually speaks to me loudest in medical contexts ( I am studying to be a chaplain). Anyway, I am glad I found this book. There is a lot of stuff in it I needed to hear right now. If perfectionism is holding you down I totally recommend this book.

Reminded of the power of prayer. Not placing our professional skill or ability on a pedistal. But humbly honoring God with our skill since he has given it to us. This book is a practical testimony of how a small prayer can have everlasting effects.
