Publisher's Summary

In 1974, a waitress in small-town Nebraska idly dreams of escaping her dead-end job and her boss, who controls every aspect of her life - until a handsome stranger comes to town and her luck begins to change. Inspired by Bonnie and Clyde mythology and Robin Hood folklore, Ground Given is a romantic crime story of a woman determined to break free.

Sinead - who is both resilient and vulnerable, insightful and insecure - spends her days supporting her ailing mother and appeasing Emerson, the man who owns her house and the diner where she works. She wants nothing more than to leave the town her own dark history is bound up in, but Emerson asserts his power over her, thwarting her progress at every turn. One day, Tobias, a mysterious rambler from the east coast, walks into the diner, and Sinead makes the impulsive decision to invite him into her life and home. As their relationship intensifies, her dreams of running away take shape as ambitious plans, but one wrong move could have life-altering consequences.

Turned political 11 minutes in

No thanks. If I wanted to hear the other sides political views I would have chosen a political book.

Not good.

Not much to admire in any of the characters. It felt more like a political lecture than a story. I admit I lost interest about 1/3 through and turned it off.

Wish it could have been longer

This was a great short story about how one person can control your whole life and how another can show you in a short amount of time how you can be free from it all. Granted she didn’t get all of her happiness in the end, but if she did then it would just be a fairy tale and not something that could happen in real life. Emerson got what he deserved in the end, he was no father figure he was a control freak to both her and her mother

Under-developed

It must be challenging for a writer to develop character and sustain a plot within the structure of a short story. I didn’t find this one to be successful as a short story, but the narration was great. Oh well....

Straight out simplistic real

A straight out simplistic but quite realistic tale. A shade dubious and vainly wicked but almost ends fairly, like most good true tale do.

Short but cool

Really interesting story involving control and love. Could have been longer but the characters are developed correctly.

Missing a lot!

Starts off ok then gets a little better. Then it jumps to 40 years later. Could’ve been a pretty good book had it not skipped 40 years & ended. Glad it was free!
