Publisher's Summary

A former firearms executive pulls back the curtain on America's multibillion-dollar gun industry, exposing how it fostered extremism and racism, radicalizing the nation and bringing cultural division to a boiling point.

As an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and conservationist - all things that the firearms industry was built on - Ryan Busse chased a childhood dream and built a successful career selling millions of firearms for one of America’s most popular gun companies.

But blinded by the promise of massive profits, the gun industry abandoned its self-imposed decency in favor of hardline conservatism and McCarthyesque internal policing, sowing irreparable division in our politics and society. That drove Busse to do something few other gun executives have done: He's ending his 30-year career in the industry to show us how and why we got here.

Gunfight is an insider’s call-out of a wild, secretive, and critically important industry. It shows us how America's gun industry shifted from prioritizing safety and ethics to one that is addicted to fear, conspiracy, intolerance, and secrecy. It recounts Busse's personal transformation and shows how authoritarianism spreads in the guise of freedom, how voicing one's conscience becomes an act of treason in a culture that demands sameness and loyalty. Gunfight offers a valuable perspective as the nation struggles to choose between armed violence or healing.

Critic Reviews

“Ryan Busse presents a fascinating, clear-eyed account of the gun industry’s slide into extremism. Gunfight is an important book for anyone seeking to understand how our country’s debate over the role of guns and gun laws in our society has become so bitter and fraught. I was left with a sense of hope that there is a path forward; one where the majority of Americans, including the majority of gun owners, stand up to the gun lobby's bullying and demand lasting change.” (Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords)

“Ryan Busse is a gun enthusiast, conservationist, and defender of our Second Amendment. This is a must-read book for anyone who wants to understand how a wholesome part of America was twisted to radicalize wide swaths of our country, and its all wrapped up in a wild-ride story that you can't put down.” (Steve Bullock, two-term Montana Governor)

Gunfight is a riveting account of how special interests have perverted the Second Amendment to create a culture of gun extremism that's radicalized a vocal minority. But gun owners like Ryan Busse are taking back the narrative from extremists who are trying to use guns to undermine our democracy.” (Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action)

Outstanding

This is an outstanding account of the America we live in today. Speaking as a hunter/gun owner and lefty liberal snowflake, the author put into words the way I have felt about the way conservation and gun ownership have taken so many wrong turns into a dark partisan spitting match.

The truth is appreciated but difficult to hear.

This was certainly a difficult story for the author to live. I am glad to have learned the truth about the activities of the NRA. It is so sad that a small part of our country can dictate the rules for keeping the rest of the county and especially our children safe!

More falsehoods!!!

The author has the right intentions but he is not leading folks in a productive direction with his blatant miss representation of facts, or his conclusions. Reducing gun violence will only happen by asking why people want to kill other people. Gun control will continue to be ineffective, especially for masa shootings, at best, and is absolutely racist at worse. Please reference Negroes and the Gun by Nicholas Johnson for more on that. Don’t waste your money on this book!

I tried to be open minded

Meh I understand some of these issues but there is still lack of knowledge in the “modern guns” that shows, thus ignoring the other perspective entirely which is….both sides are extremely fear mongering. Good for the dude, interesting story but I’m hearing some
Weirdly placed misinformation. I am pretty anti left, I don’t love the nra but I get it…so I tried to not be bias and listen but I just hear this dude demonizing anyone who likes ARs is like
The dude who attacked his kid. I’m not going to rant more.

Dude has kids and gets emotional over mass shootings and quits the industry. Is mildly fudd like and scared of black rifles

It was interesting to see how kimbers started to suck as pistols

Excellent, learned so much

Great explanation how the NRA turned from a father/son hunting/safety non-profit organization in 1993 to a fearmongering political power party under the guise of freedom. Gun sales have gone from 350k per year to 6M per year in 25 years. Learned so much about Bush The impact of letting the assault rifle ban expire and absolving liability from gun companies. All from a writer that is still pro gun and for common sense gun reform.

Essential Read

This book is for everyone. Insightful and honest. I long for the day when we could respectfully disagree with one another. We all need to do the morally right thing and love thy neighbor.

NRA scam revealed by insider

Mr Ryan’s story confirms and magnifies the audacity and atrocities of the NRA. It show the power of conspiracies playing on fear and racist themes. The recent leadership of the organization are criminals of conscience.
