Publisher's Summary

The New York Times best seller - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!

It's 2524. Harvest is a peaceful, prosperous farming colony on the very edge of human-controlled space. But humanity has unknowingly trespassed on holy ground - straying into the path of the aggressive, theocratic empire known as the Covenant. What begins as a chance encounter between an alien privateer and a human freighter soon catapults all of mankind into a struggle for its very existence.

But humanity is also currently locked in a bitter civil war of its own: the Insurrection. With resources strained to the breaking point, the ultimate survival of Harvest’s citizens falls to a squad of battle-weary UNSC Marines and their inexperienced colonial militia trainees. In this unlikely group of heroes, one will stand above the rest - a young Marine staff sergeant named Avery Johnson....

Hard to follow

While this story was interesting at some points, I just found it really hard to follow. The back story of Avery was nice to know, but I feel like the only bits that I will retain out of it is the ending. This story was actually much better at telling the story of the Covenant.

I enjoyed having two narrators for this story

I have read the books for this series and the audiobook hold up quite well. I like how they had two narrators, a male and a female. I think it would be a good idea to have the all male voices by one and all female voices by another. if you listen you may understand what I mean. Overall this was a good book.

Much better that expected.

I was originally turned away by some of the reviews of this book, but I bit the bullet and decided to listen. I'm glad I did, as it is a great experience into the old expanded universe of Halo. With a plethora of new and recognizable characters both human and especially Covenant, this made for quite a good listen. A Covenant Hurragok (Engineer) as one of the many main characters makes for a unique perspective compared to others such as a Sangheli or human. The story and plot itself wasn't perfect. as it jumped around a bit akd struggled a bit to stay on track, but I found myself enjoying the background information of the characters (again, especially the Covenant) being told much more interesting than the actual plot itself. The writing style wasn't anything too special, and there was a bit of "male power fantasy" vibe in some parts, particularly in the (mild spoiler) somewhat forced and out of place sex scene right at the end of the book. Thankfully it did not detract from the rest of the book too much.

All in all, pretty good. I would recommend to anyone who's a fan of Halo and already knows about some of it's lore.

good story, some flaws

The overall story is good. The lack of female characters is a glaring flaw and does not mesh with the rest of the Halo universe. (Only two women in the entire cast? An all-male militia in the year 2525?) The sexualization of the very few women present is both predictable and completely unnecessary. It significantly detracts from an otherwise solid story.

On the other hand, Holter Graham and Jen Taylor's performances are fantastic. I highly recommend them!

Prequel? Timeline not in order. Confusing.

This book feels out of order from the rest of them. A good story but it through some confusion there's some confusion in when listening to the books in the order on here.

The best of all the Halo books

In my opinion, this is not only the best Halo audio book, but the best of all the Halo books.
Holter Graham does an excellent job of reading the story, giving each character their own distinct, believable voice, unlike some other narrators (cough cough Scott Brick cough cough). They even got Jen Taylor AKA Cortana to voice one of the characters!
As for the story itself, it begins almost like a crime-noir novel, with everyone's favourite marine Avery Johnson caught in a moral struggle in his career in the UNSC. As the story progresses, he visibly develops as a character and overcomes his doubts of himself in order to become a better soldier and a better person. The other characters are likeable, including the Covenant characters, who provide a fascinating insight into motivations of their Great Journey.
Overall, this is a must read/listen for any Halo fan.

Another great book!

First off I'd like to say the backstory of Sgt Johnson was very well written. The training of recruits to the attack of Harvest all felt very emotional, I loved how half of the story followed Dadab (A Deacon - Unggoy) and his relationship with Lighter than Some (Huragok) throughout their journey, just goes to show not all the Covenant were bad, as we know, most were told to join or face the wrath of the Covenant's might.

Great to see Tartarus when he was young, had my Halo 2 gameplay in my head when he appeared.
All in all this was a great book, not as good as Ghosts of Onyx, but a great story. Good see to Jen take the reins, playing the AI...
A must for a Halo fan.

Top story

Brilliant. Actual Covenant lore, history and motivation from both the main profits and from the lesser fanatic sets. The Covenant in this book are treated like The Empire/sith in star wars. As if they are relevant and not just something to aim a gun at.

Avery is fleshed out and made far more than just a bad catchphrase machine and although his threat level is minimised by his continued existence In the games I actually cared about him by the end.

All the side story's and politics were entertaining enough to break up the military tone of this book and slight amusement comes from the Grunt Deacons relationship with his floating friend.

what this book and all other Halo books I've listen to thus far are missing is the starwars treatment some sound effects and background noise would make these books far more engulfing.

All in all, a good listen and well worth a credit if your into your Halo and would like some backstory you probably haven't heard before.

Difficult to follow

The first books were easy to follow, they introduced you slowly to new items, Languages, races etc.

This book drops you in at the deep end, with 2 running story lines that switch between humanity and alien, and as such, you have 2 different names for the same thing.

It’s a bit complicated, trying to follow what happens, and often I found myself trying to recall what had happened so that I could understand what was happening in the later parts...

More of a beloved character

Contact Harvest gives a great look into the opening days of the Human-Covenant war. The book gives some great backstory to characters from the games, the best which is the books protagonist.
It's filled with good action as well as character moments, a very worthwhile read or listen for any Halo fan looking for more content outside of the games

A new love for the Covenant

A scene where an alien picks up it's prescription and gets stuck in rush hour traffic on the way home
