Story
Rumi's Spiritual Verses is the greatest mystical poem in Islamic culture - and of all time. Rumi examines our human separation from reality, love, and truth. He shows how love - neither erotic nor sentimental but divine, by which the universe is held together - enlightens ignorance and dissolves suffering. The first book of the Masnavi is the key to the whole work: It takes off from simple, amusing tales into realms unimaginable, but wholly familiar to the human heart.

A 2009 Nautilus Gold Award Winner, Pure Water is Coleman Barks’ inspired live performance of the poetry of Jellaludin Rumi (1207-1273) - with Sufi stories and jokes, accompanied with music by Bach, O’Carolan, Friesen and others. The performance captured in this recording recalls the essence of the communal celebrations of poetry, stories, jokes, prayer, and music in which Rumi’s work was first uttered, but presents it in a distinctive contemporary setting. Coleman’s words combine with the cello of Grammy Award-winner Eugene Friesen.

It is said that the practice of dream yoga deepens our awareness during all our experience: the dreams of the night; the dream-like experience of the day; and the bardo experiences after death. Indeed, the practice of dream yoga is a powerful tool of awakening, used for hundreds of years by the great masters of the Tibetan traditions. Unlike in the Western psychological approach to dreams, the ultimate goal of Tibetan dream yoga is the recognition of the nature of mind or enlightenment itself.

Publisher's Summary
In modern-day Persia, the 14th-century poet Hafiz remains the most treasured voice of his homeland - a place where his work outsells Rumi, and even the Koran. Yet only recently have Westerners come to know this wild Sufi mystic's astonishing verses on love and spiritual longing. Now, with Hafiz: The Scent of Light, you will join Daniel Ladinsky - the acclaimed translator of The Gift - to revel in more than 30 of Hafiz's most stirring works. Offered here in the manner that Hafiz composed them, namely spoken or sung spontaneously amid companions and inspired music, each of these exquisite love songs (ghazals) shimmers with a nuance, depth, and passion rarely captured in previous translations. Hafiz once said: "A poet is someone who can pour light into a cup, then raise it to nourish your beautiful parched holy mouth." From his vision of an all-embracing Beloved who sees beyond our religious beliefs to his revelations on the oneness of worldly ecstasy and spiritual awakening, Hafiz continues to pour the light of his poetry forth today. Music composed and performed by Stevin McNamara (sitar and nylon string guitar), with special guest artists and composers Steve Gorn (bansuri flute), Jeffrey Rodgers (tabla, santoor, ethnic drums, percussion), Annette Cantor (vocals), Pandit S.N. Sopori (drupad/khyal/tarana singing), Bhushan Sopori (tabla), and Aurelia Roze (violin). Read by Nataraja Kallio.

Perfect !
What made the experience of listening to Hafiz: The Scent of Light the most enjoyable?
This is so delightful ! If you're into Sufism, it's going to caress your soul.
The reader has the most beautiful tone of voice. I don't know if it's Daniel Ladinsky or Stevin McNamara, but I didn't notice two narrators. Maybe I'm silly. And the music is so beautiful...
Daniel Ladinsky's rendition of Hafiz... As usual, superb !
This album is more like a meditation, a prayer, in a Sufi way. I've been listening to bits of it while eating spectacular chocolate and drinking great coffee... In silence, with my eyes closed most of the time. My own little beautiful private moment.
The whole encounter is so intimate, just like meditation and prayer are very private personal experiences.
Thank you, Daniel ! So beautiful...
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
All of it.

poetic, uplifting, seductive
"A poet is someone who can pour light into a cup, then raise it to quench your beautiful, parched, holy mouth."
Ladinsky lives up to this opening statement, as what follows is a gentle invitation to quiet one's mind and focus on the inner life of the heart. Well-chosen and -delivered lines are beaded into a fabric of meditative musical interludes. I plan to savor this again and again.
